I've seen all of season 1 and most of season 2 and I'm still confused about the title. I'm pretty sure the name of the town is March, but that doesn't make a ton of sense cause why would a towns name have a 3 in it. Also my guess would be one of the pieces is a lion or something but honestly idk. I'm watching the dub if that helps for context

edit: guys I know what the English translation is freaking heck y'all

The english title is "March Comes in Like a Lion"
3-Gatsu means March, or the 3rd Month

3 is pronounced "San" in Japanese so it's "san-gatsu", not "three-gatsu". It just means 3rd month or March.

The title is closer to "March's lion" or "the lion of March" when directly translated but those don't really work that well as titles in English.

oh okay, so if Lion really was the name of one of the tournaments a better name might be "Lion comes to March" or something

It comes from an old saying: "March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb" in reference to the transition of march from winter to spring. March usually starts with a harsh weather and then transitions into more gentle weather.

Making a parallelism of the journey that Rei goes through to overcome his depression and find new meaning and joy on his life. How he starts depressed, isolated and with no meaningful connections and ends up giving a 180 degrees spin to his life, thanks to his friends and passion for shogi.

There's a saying in a lot of North hemisphere countries which goes like "March comes in like a lions, but goes out like a lamb." It refers both to the weather, which is extreme hot but cools down by the end of the month, and to astronomy, as the Leo and Aries constellations are close from each other at the sky.

So, Sangatsu no Lion is a reference to this old saying, as the story starts in March and Rei's progress works somewhat to the same direction. From somewhere messy and wild (the Lion) to somewhere chill and cool (the Lamb).

I hope I made myself clear lol
