This movie & the 1984 novel are best. The 2003 live action was OK, the Korean 2020 live action is MEH. IDK there is a manga, so not sure about that.

I have watched the 2003 live action few months ago compare to that this (anime) is 10 time better moreover the anime version have a nice conclusion to the story (happy ending) unlike the live action ,

I didn't knew there is another adaption made by Korea in 2020 , I will check that out someday if I have time in my hand

I had no idea that there was so many adaptations of this story. Since I have only watched the anime, I guess I'll go with that.

The movie did a stellar job adapting the novel but the novel is still a bit better imo. If only the movie runs for another 30 minutes or so, I believe all the hard hitting point would be a bit more impactful

is anime a faithful adaptation of a novel / manga? Or is this live action fully adapting the novel? Which version of the anime or live action ends with the manga / novel?

It was originally a light novel. The anime is the one that is more faithful. The Japanese live action has a sad ending. The other adaptation I haven't seen/read

So the original work is a novel, not a light novel. But it's confusing because the novel itself is written as a collection of novellas (written, not only published), and Josee is both the name of the novel, and the name of the novella.

And no the anime isn't a faithful adaptation, they pretty much changed and modernised everything. To be honest I'm surprised the movie has even the same title.

The 2003 movie version has some nudity in it at least so there's that, but if you don't care about seeing some sex scenes and topless Japanese women, then the anime movie I find is far better.

I'm pretty sure all the Josee to Tora adaptions are very different from each other. The Japanese live action, the Korean live action, and the anime.

anime is great.
manga just the same as anime.
light novel also great.. well, duh. please give it a read. it's really short.
both live action absolute trash.
both make them break up in the end.
k-live action's plot is really weird.
and the j-live action straight up h-movie.
my jaw dropped to the mariana trench and i hope that i can delete them from my memory.
