What if a fishman will eat a devil-fruit?

* I am currently episode 31 so please don't spoil *
so basically, people who eat a devil fruit lose the ability to swim and sink into the ocean, so if they fall into the water and no one will rescue them it's game over. But what if I am a Fishman like Arlong? Will I lose the ability to swim but still be able to breathe underwater? If I'll sink to the bottom of the ocean will I just stay there until I die of hunger? what are your thoughts?
