I haven't read the manga (I plan to read it though) and I am genuinely curious on what manga readers thought of the movie...

I thought it was decent.. But it was also kinda underwhelming imo

I think the characterization was really, really off. The final hour or so of the movie mishandles so much & portrays the manga so badly that I was so disappointed watching.

It was bad as a manga adaptation. I'll just tell people to read the manga instead of watching the movie. The plot is pretty different anyway, movie watchers weren't spoiled much.

I was very happy to learn that Homunculus would get a live action film, but it was kinda underwhelming. The Yakuza/Robot part was decent, but the rest was rushed and shallow.

I would recommend sticking to the manga first, and if you really like it, watch the movie to see a different point of view on the source material.

The adaptation is bad. The first half of the movie is mostly a faithful adaptation ...

... but the last half is almost all new stuff, and the biggest mistake of this adaptation is that the movie totally misses the point that makes the manga so good: every main character in the manga is mentally broken and morally questionable.

The movie is a plain adaptation of a meaningful manga full of human dilemma ... and schizophrenia

I'm in the camp of the people did not completely understand the manga, but I still really enjoyed it.
Having just seen the movie, I also really like it as well, just for different reasons. They obviously cut a lot of stuff out, and changed a ton, esp near the end. Some changes upset me, while other changes were good decisions.
Overall I was most impressed with what the movie medium added to it, ignoring the story aspect. The CGI was impressive, the actors were well casted, soundtrack was perfect, and the camera shots were great.

Some of you never watched Bakugan Battle Brawlers on TeleToon in 2008 and it shows.
