I'm not saying that this is something wrong or bad for me, but after I found out about it, I increasingly begin to hear not male characters with androgynous voice acting, but boys who sound like a stereotypical tomboy or shoujo ikemen onna.

Has anyone else got these vibes? I think this is the classic "curse of knowledge" where knowing the mechanisms gets in the way of enjoying a fictional illusion.

tbh i dont really notice it that much, most of the time the voice actors are pretty decent so you wont really get that vibe unless you try

I have never said that they are bad at their work. Just after revealing the fact that most VA of young boys are female, I instinctively began to pay attention to it. For example, Shaman King's MC sounds like a cool tomboy like Clevebro from Azur Lane to me.

To be honest, I was surprised when I found out that the English voice actor for Naruto was a woman. But it makes sense considering that young boys' voices don't start to get deep until they hit puberty.

It really doesn't bother me but most of the kids' voices are like adult females even it is anime or the real world.

thats how it should be considering usually after the age of 12, they hit puberty and thats when all of the differences with boys vs girls start appearing and boys get a deeper voice, so girl voice acting for young characters is the best they can do imo

Nope, I've known Goku was voiced by a female since I was 4 or 5 years old, and I've only ever been impressed by it.
If the acting's good, you don't notice, man. And most of the female VAs do a phenomenal job imo.

If it was me 10 years ago, then I'd have been surprised.
Good thing I already knew that when I found out that Naruto was voiced by Junko Takeuchi.

I wasted all my time in rewatching to the point of my rewatch total is higher than my overall anime total lmao

Both the 4Kids and Pokémon Company International voices of Ash Ketchum were women I believe.

I've never been bothered about young male characters being voice acted by female voice actresses. It kind of makes sense because male voice actors often have well... manly voices, and that would sound weird on a child. And obviously child voice actors are rare.

not really, I was surprised when I found out that Alphonse Elric was voiced by a woman but her performance was 10/10. When I hear children voices in anime I imagine they are voiced by women but it doesn't ruin the immersion, they actually sound like children, they sound good.
Also Naruto's VA is extraordinary, same with Ikari Shinji's VA.
My only problem is with Kenshin's VA, it's not like she's a bad actress but the voice doesn't suit Kenshin.

edit: I find it funny when a 50 year old lady is voicing a 15 year old anime girl, not that I'd have problems with it

To be honest, i never liked that, it's especially aggravating when female seiyuu also voice teenage and adult male characters such as Kenshin Himura, Kurama, Yukito(CCS) and Yuki Souma (2001 version of Fruits Basket)<- Thank God they gave him a male seiyuu in the remake!

I'm really glad that this trend seems to have mostly died out in modern times, except maybe for some remakes.

"Female voice acting for younger male characters"

Not only in anime. Child voice actors are very few (especially good ones like the kid who is playing the MC in Kid Cosmic) but there is a huge demand of such roles.

The only way around it is adult females pretending...some of them are quite good.
Doesn't bother me, cartoons are pretty abstract to being with.

Well, in Yuki's case, it was a way to highlight his strong androgyny. Though I admit it, in the original show, he often looked too butchy out of context.

Well you can't expect the producers to bring in actual 12-year-old boys who don't know the first thing about voice acting in. Yeah there are professional child actors but they're scarce so having younger boys in anime being voiced by women is the best option since they're actually trained for this stuff. Having that is less noticeable and distracting than seeing a supposedly 10-year-old boy sound like he's smashed through puberty already with a low voice.

I'm OK with it if I can't tell. But sometimes it's not the best choice, i.e. Kenshin's jap VA in the Rurouni Kenshin series.

Not only that but if you actually brought a child voice actor in - you're bound to replace him before long because somewhere along the line he's going to hit puberty and his voice changes. So if you plan on doing a long-running show or more seasons or even just some drama CDs or promo material in the future it's not really an option.

I don't hear the difference. I was surprised to know Bart Simpson was voiced by a women back then.

Just now I discovered in this topic that Goku, Naruto and Luffy are voiced by women?

I can only tip my fedora to all these wonderfull VA's.
When will Black Clover release new anime?! It has been 3 years already since March 2021...

I don't mind it if it makes sense and sounds realistic or is done with a teen with a voice actor who can actually make them sound like a boy, but what really bothers me is if the child is really young. An adult woman's voice sounds nothing like a prepubescent boy's voice.

If they were good at their craft, it's never been a problem for me. (Been watching anime for over a decade now)

One character I've never been able to reconcile their voice with their gender is Kurapika from the Hunter x Hunter (2010) series voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro . She's not a bad VA, but I think her voice was just way too feminine to be assigned a male role.

I clearly remember being absolutely confused about Kurapika's gender as a young teen.

It only bothers me because a lot of these actresses aren't very good. Minami Takayama can make a convincing child. Megumi Ogata can make a convincing adult. But Kurapika's voice will never pass as male.

I haven’t been one to pay attention like that, and I’m not bothered that much when I realize. Luffy’s VA has stuck w me forever but I can see how this makes people feel a certain way

We don't deserve Ogata Megumi's voice acting. She's amazing with both genders.

I watched 3 seasons of Attack on Titan without even being aware that Armin was voiced by a female VA. She did such a great job. Naruto as well, never once have I doubted that the VA is a female, all along it sounded like a male to me, and even after knowing they are voiced by females, it still didn't affect my experience at all.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

It's never a problem for me. Indeed I think it's very interesting that female voice could have such a great range. And I'm very impressed by the voice actresses who act for younger male characters.

I think they sound like young Japanese boys...the way they are supposed to.

It's when they are GROWN MEN...that I find it really jarring. Except maybe for Luffy...I mean, he is supposed to be 19 after the time jump...but I think it'd be even weirder if he suddenly had a deep, manly voice. xD

I don´t really mind when women dub boys and teenagers. Their voices slowly changes, after all. Like a friend of mine who were 15 and still had high pitched voice. And there are some late bloomer young adults, which is why Luffy´s voice is fitting. He looks even younger sometimes.

But then there´s Goku and Naruto as adults... Nope. Just nope.

I do notice it, however it doesn't actively bother me, with one exception.

I really did not like how Aladdin from Magi sounded. With all of the young boy characters who are voiced by adult female VAs, at a certain point I can actually get immersed enough that I forget that tiny detail, however Aladdin sounded so aggressively female that I could not take it seriously, it was super fuckin distracting. I'm not even blaming the VA for that, it's not her fault, but I can't help it, I just couldn't watch the anime and had to switch to the manga.

I don't mind it at all, as long as the voices fit the characters. Most Japanese VAs are great so it's usually not a problem for me. Megumi Ogata and Junko Minagawa are my favorite female voice actors who often voice male characters.

im personally not bothered by it at all. it surprised me a few times when i just found out but thats it. there aren't a lot of professional child voice actors yet and some adult male voice actors might not have that higher pitch they need so they'll just have to make use of female va's. if they fit the role and do it nicely then i dont see why not

It's difficult for a grown man, with the generally deeper voice, to sound like a young boy since generally boys sounds fairly similar to girls until puberty.

And generally adults are better voice actors than children.

It's not a new thing. Many boys and young teens or more feminine characters have them. But when in another dub, when they replaced with a man. Oh my, it sounds so weird.

Example: Aoyama from Tokyo Mew Mew (https://youtu.be/1LMFjqGhnRQ?t=318]Hebrew (He was 19 back then) [/url]\Japanese (Yeah, her dub also feels weird, I know compared to the Japanese I know).

I just laughed when I heard his voice in Japanese.

The most cursed ones I saw were young boys (13y/o or younger) having ADULT MALE voices. Wtf.
