Would this anime be off-putting to somebody who plays and follows tennis extremely closely? Or do I just have to switch my brain off to enjoy it?

What is the best representation of tennis in anime?

Baby Steps is more realistic than Prince of Tennis imo

As a fan of sports anime, I'd say Baby Steps is one of the most realistic one out there.

It's pure mechanical skill and no super-powers, with an MC that's not OP talented, but very hard-working.

Baby Steps Introduced me to the sport of tennis essentially, and I can say as a now fully-fledged fan of tennis that for an anime in actually explains and elaborates on many of the intricacies of tennis (I.e matching up against different styles of play, deliberate changing of pace, mind games etc.). Obviously keep in mind the series follows the journey of a character who is completely new to the sport and his path into professional tennis. But even with that seeing the process of a player developing their specific tennis skill set is not only satisfying to watch but portrayed amazingly. So speaking as a tennis fan, I’d confidently say I’d watch it again and be just as entertained as I was before. Hope this helps :)

Baby Steps is such a great anime and it's a shame that no one is watching it :(

Baby Steps really helps you appreciate how much strategy goes into every single tennis match. The matches are also quite intense.

I would definitely recommend it if you enjoy sports anime. It’s one of the good sports anime in my opinion but it does lack balance between many characters, and it's not really as well as something like Haikyuu since tennis is a one person sport. And I don't see any way of comparing the 2

It's better than all the tennis animes out there and you should check it out if you haven't already Chos.

It has a very great story and is fairly realistic! I’ve been a Nadal fanboy my whole life and watched all his important games but I learned so many small details about the sport of tennis just from baby steps. Its only unrealistic factor is how fast the MC reaches the level of people playing tennis for 10y+ in less than 2-3 years but then again it’s anime, so expect that kind of growth in the MC. That said he doesn’t do stuff right out of fiction and grinds his way up and plays a very sensible sort of Federer-esque form of tennis that prioritises technical skill and foresight over speed and power! It’s a must watch if you’re a tennis player and fan and I’m a huge fan of Nat-chan the female lead (waifu) of the show!
