I have seen first 2 episodes of One-Punch Man yesterday, and oh boy, I haven't seen that much violence in the previous 2 years (of watching experience).

I want to know why the violent anime are highly popular. Some titles which I know of that type are Attack On Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, Akira etc.

Is it the demand? If yes, then why?

Action and good animation you say. I would count Mob Psycho 100 in that category but OPM...I know, was made by best action director in Japan, but...too bold.

Because violence is popular overall. It can be both fun and emotional... and of course, it's visceral. Just like sex, violence sells by default, it's not just in anime shows.

I agree violence shouldn't be such a big selling point, but honestly, you've gotta be pretty frail to think One Punch Man was a violent show, lol.
Everything changes. Even the happy and funny things eventually disappear. How can I still enjoy this place then?

Have you seen Devilman Crybaby or the horror-action anime that were a bit popular back in the day? OPM and such fail in comparison to that

I don't like it as whole. But if it done well like the Monogatari Series, then I'm in. The bad gory animes I've encountered are the ones that uses gore aspect just for the reason it being .. well .. gory, like Blood C and Another.

From the anime that I watched I consider gore/violence to be a lot in Tokyo ghoul, Jojo(the anime is still tame in comparison to the manga), Hellsing ultimate and it only increased my enjoyment of these anime.

If you thought One punch man of all things was violent then violent/gore anime are just not for you.

People seek out things that don't happen in everyday life . Violence is interesting . People fighting might be interesting to a person who has never seen blood .
Lot of people might think that Lelouch or Eren killing people to be " badass " even though they might not if someone did the same IRL .

For me personally, if the plot itself is good and the scenes have something to do with what's happening, I enjoy violence or gore. A good example would be Devilman Crybaby.
If it's pointless I just see it as.. idk, pointless. I'm very neutral regarding this because I don't specifically want it, but I don't avoid it either.

It seems to me that many people simply have high standards of violence at the moment, you know its still animation, after watching tv shows like Game of Thrones where they burn little girl alive, rape family members, stab pregnant woman I have pretty high tolerance about violence. I cant even imagine how someone would consider OPM as violent anime, its comedy. As for the violence itself, I do not mind if it is used in the right way, for example to show the viewer the brutality of the world in the show and the powerlessness of people fighting with the titans, as it was in AOT.

I think it is because many anime fans are teenagers and they are used to a certain stigma that animation is for kids shows. So when they find out about anime:

SHOCK FACTOR and "Anime is not for kids mom, here look at how they get raped, tortured, and killed unlike in cartoons"

Personally, not a fan. Some of my most disliked pieces of fiction are filled with such gore and subject matters. I don't dislike them because of the violence, they just handle them distastefully.

I guess there needs to be some undestanding that the anime/movie/tv-show that has violence is all an act, it's not real. And then it becomes entertaining. Maybe because it's different from average life? Or that it often looks visually cool? Who knows.

I've always been a fan of violent anime/movies/tv-shows/games. I've basically grown up with that stuff. For example to me action shows without blood seem dull, like as if they are just pretending.

Ok, so, first of all, while i admittedly like the action and battles in anime, gore, on the other hand, i do NOT like at all!!

I'm pretty sure gore is what this thread is actually about and from the replies here, i can see that people have become so desensitized to violence and gore that they completely ignored the fact that, yes, One Punch Man DOES have gore. While perhaps not the most gory anime ever made, it's still far more violent than something like, say, Naruto.

For someone who didn't grow up with violence and gore from a young age or who may be squeamish, it is justified to not like this level of violence and should be taken seriously and not laughed at or mocked like in this thread!!!

I think it depends how the violence is done. I think a prime example of gore done right is Attack On Titan. As they have a great story to back up the gore so it doesn't seem like an anime for edgy teenagers. A prime example of gore done wrong is Akame ga kill(although I still loved the shit out of it) Akame ga kill is really only gonna be liked by people who enjoy seeing gore from some reason.

So basically if you dont use violence as the main point of the anime people are gonna like it: Attack on titan, Maybe re:Zero. If you do, less people are gonna enjoy it.
I gave up on character of the week since it takes too much thinking. I'll just change my forum pfp to whoever I want every week lol.

Dauphine, I really appreciate someone really understood that.

Actually, I can't handle the bodies of the people being cut into pieces or death in just a fraction of seconds. The lives of human should not be taken so lightly (even if the characters are fictional) because even for little amount of time we subconsciously accept that these depictions are of a 'human'.

basic human biology.
we tend to love adrenaline rushing experiences. Fight scenes and violent scenes give the adrenaline rush way too easily.

not that everyone would enjoy it. but like a majority (more than 90%) of the people do.
You might be squeamish as the other person said. There is nothing wrong in hating violent scenes.

I think it's because most violent anime have good animation+action so it's high demand.
I've also been wondering about this question lately.

Wait... wait, haha.... no, wait, did you say One Punch Man? Oh man, oh man, you haven’t seen anything.
I’ll give Attack on Titan to you though. The manga is especially gory because the anime censors stuff in seasons 1 to 3. It seems that Season 4 will go all out with the gore.

Devilman Crybaby
Berserk
These two anime are probably beyond your comprehension in terms of violence. If you thought One Punch Man was bad I recommend checking these out.
And to answer your question, it’s simple: because violence is interesting and probably the most human thing there is. It’s human, it’s horrible, but it’s human.

I'm personally not into the gory type of violence that you see in Attack on Titan and Baki. But action anime is a genre that is typically more exciting to get into than slice-of-life shows. The pacing is faster and it keeps you invested with every new development that occurs in the story.

art was alwais violent, the begining of art was super violent in itself (greek tragedy). you should read books about that, if you're really interested, I actually don't know many of them but nietzsche's origins of tragedy can be a good one for example.

Violent anime are popular because action anime is popular.

It's hard to have an action anime without gore or anything like that. It would just seem lazy, stupid, and unrealistic. If I wanna watch an anime like One Punch Man, JoJo, or Dragon Ball, I would be disappointed if there wasn't any gore because that is so unrealistic.

Anime like Pokémon and Beyblade on the other hand doesn't have gore because it was made for children to watch. Shounen are made for teen boys and Seinen are made for people older than that. Action anime falls into one of these genres, so it wouldn't make sense if there was no gore at all.

It's like the Hunger Games. If there is no violence or gore in the Hunger Games, then people appreciation and enjoyment will go down immensely due to how it lost the realism factor. Same goes for action anime. If you have people as strong as shounen characters like Saitama or Goku, it wouldn't make sense if the opponent can just walk away with nothing more than a scratch.

I guess violent anime is popular because its an Action genre.
Some people like to watch fights, even in the old ages of humanity we loved to watch others fight. I think its mainly adrenaline from watching that keeps people hooked.

Gore is a factor that plays too. Some people enjoy Gore, aka the flying vital organs and such. Gore often is also a part of horror and gives you fright or adrenaline.

Fantasy. With fantasy i mean special powers/magic/invincibleness. Humans often wish to be as strong, as capable as things they watch on screen so its enjoyable to replace the main character with themselves as they watch it.

Of course all of the above doesn't apply to everyone but i do think my statements can be true for a majority of people.

Anime is not popular because of the violence. If you're squeamish, you probably paid it too much attention. There are plenty of shows that have far more blood and gore that does not garner much respect from the community because they are questionable in other aspects. The blood and gore did not save them. Your small sample size seems anecdotal, since we could easily find as many counterexamples.

well, personally I think that in some anime it is necessary (tokyo ghoul would be nothing without the blood), also in some animes it gives a touch of darkness and discomfort that makes the series good

I won't agree that it's popular because there are pros and cons behind it

Pros - They keep people entertained, as long as the actions make sense

Cons - Since violence endangers characters/people, it makes an anime too serious though and people might get used to those scenes

Oh hey it's one of my favorite topics.

Not all gore is the same or serve the same purpose. In OPM gore is there to show us readers/watchers that yes this villain is actually business and then Saitama comes and KO's them to show how op he is. So in conclusion it is there to bring the humor of the show.

I'm actually rather picky when it comes to gore, despite I voted on the poll yes. I don't care for action at all, I just want good and more bizarre gore. I'm someone who loves torture porn/gorno and those usually are done on cheap ass camera and lack action. I have my reasons why I like gore so much, but unfortunately when it comes to anime it lacks on gore department due to censorship (especially these days). Manga and Japanese horror movies instead keep on delivering me amazing gore and I'm grateful for that. I can't say why someone else would like or over look gore in their fiction, but I'd say there is a limit how much gore is acceptable for mainstream before it becomes gross and a turn off. When mainstream title shows characters' puking blood most don't see it as disgusting, but you make a story where our characters' are getting their tooth pulled off one by one and tongues cut and force fed on the camera that's often too much for the audience. I'm also guessing here but anime got its reputation as more "mature" animation in the west so people latch on more violent shows too and ignore any shows aimed at younger audience to keep the image.

Anyway if you don't like gore don't force yourself to watch it and it's not silly or laughable if you have your limits on what you can watch. you do you OP.
