I saw a lot of gintama anime entries on MAL's top anime list. I wanted to ask if it is worth watching ?

As you can probably tell Gintama is one of my favorites, and I recommend it to anyone. I do think you get more out of it though if you have seen a lot of anime, just because of the frequent references to other franchises. The great thing about Gintama is that there's no "4th wall" so basically everything happening in the anime/manga industry at the time can be talked about. I think that Gintama is a great action-comedy, but also has some of the best serious arcs I've seen across anime.

I am currently in the process of watching it and I do think it is worth watching. It’s an amazing comedy with a great extended cast of characters. Just like it was already mentioned, it has some of the best serious arcs I’ve ever seen as well. As someone who has watched a considerable amount of other super long shounen’s, while I enjoyed others such as One Piece and Naruto, Gintama is better in my opinion. They are very different, though. Gintama doesn’t really have a followed storyline. It’s very episodic. It obviously depends on the person but I seriously recommend a try.

I couldn't get into gintama, but here's my answer.
if you like the shonen genre in general, have the patience to sit through a ton of episodes and willing to wait 50 eps until it gets good, go ahead. I dropped out a few episodes in. it just wasn't interesting for me.

I am currently on the 256th episode of Gintama, and I don't think that it's worth all of your time. I got to there because I have plenty of time. It takes a lot of episodes before it gets to the serious stuff so unless you're into watching a lot of filler to get to the amazing storytelling, then I wouldn't recommend going through it. It is also 3:4 resolution for 201 episodes so that is a turn away for a lot of people.

Shonen is a demographic not a genre.

you are absolutely correct my friend.

Gintama is amazing, it starts off slow at the start but it's worth it. Binging it myself right now. Over a week or two I got over 80 episodes down.

Thanks for your response. Wow you're watching it too, right now i'm on episode 13. And I am kinda enjoying it.

By the way, do you remember that joke when gintoki smokes and later reveals that he was licking on a lollipop really fast. That joke always makes me laugh so much.

The extras at the end are hilarious for sure.

It's quite worth your time if you watch it more or less sparsely. I don't think it's worth it to binge it from start to finish (for the first season at least) due to its episodic nature. I consider it to be a little stress relief whenever I want some good laughs (after all it has a staggering 200 episodes), and for the majority of time it always manages to satisfy me.

So I do think it's worth to give it a go. Though not until episode 10 or 15 did I feel completely comfortable watching it, so if you really want to watch the whole show, try pushing yourself a bit through the rough first several episodes.

Short answer no, long answer if you can get through the boring episodes then there's some funny moments but overall boring anime and very hard to binge but it's not totally bad it's good enough to watch seen worse

Iv recently got into it and I've realized its a pretty interesting mix of slice of life elements mixed with action and comedy. Over a long time builds up its world quite impressively making it so that the solid and serious arcs really hit usually these serious arcs also give us loads of characterization and give us very compelling narratives to add.

Gintama is something really special honestly id say its worth watching if you like its weird and interesting arc structure as well as its comedy and world-building. And liking the cast is also essential.

I used to hate this anime. hate more when i saw the ranking in Mal.

but I'm really curious why the majority ppl really like this anime. so I watch from ep1-9...dropped because it's so stupid and old art. then again I try again a few months later and endure for 20-30 episodes? still, I can't get why ppl love this anime...I try again a few years later and now it's one of my fav anime.

In my opinion, I recommend you to watch other anime from JUMP first if you want to start watching Gintama. because you might not understand the parody and the joke.

After 100 episodes or so it slows down plotwise and character development takes a drastic downhill turn before kicking back up again around 140.

There's a lot of Japanese humor that someone from the West wouldn't find funny. The dub tries to accomplish this but fails miserably.

You also have to sort of be in-the-know before watching to understand that the whole show's premise is a reflection on immigration and/or American capitalism being forced on Japan during this time [Meiji Period]. All of the alien references are literally 'alien' to Japan [foreign things]. It's a funny twist on reality.

I fire it up when I need my Rie Kugimiya (Kagura) fix :) And as a bonus I get Sugita Tomokazu, too :D (Kyon from Suzumiya Haruhi) who also happens to play the lead here.

Ok maybe being a fan of a couple of the seiyuu is a minor reason to watch something but it's true in my case. Being episodic also means I can leave it on hiatus for months between my Kugimiya fixes.

?
there are 11 anime with a score of 9.00 or higher on MAL right now as I'm typing this,
3 of those anime are different variants of Gintama, including Gintama°, Gintama', and Gintama': Enchousen
go down a little bit further and you have THREE Gintama's in a row

Gintama. ranked 8.98
Gintama ranked 8.97 and
Gintama Movie 2: Kanketsu-hen - Yorozuya yo Eien Nare ranked 8.97 as well

Do you even need to ask? If the general community of MAL very obviously loves this series that much and you can tell from the way they score it, I think you have your answer

on a more serious note, Gintama is very funny but also can be very serious and is also a really good action story, I remember that Gintoki has ended major dramatic arcs while screaming "Domestic Violence" and hitting people over the head with a wooden sword, so my answer has to be yes
