(banned) if you would follow my posts in the thread you will find out that i haven't watched anime for about 7 years, and i don't find watching anime as escapism but as entertainment, don't mix them, you can watch tv, anime and whatever in your free time, but to escape reality and imagine things like waifu and stuff is not just escapism but losing the hold of reality.

banned because as I said before, having a waifu only makes you a degenerate if you take it seriously. banned i agree that there's define different between addiction and escapism, i will admit i'm addict to anime, but i don't find it as i ran away from reality, i have a lot of duties in real life, if i will say myself i have other escapism with my girl, but that's healthy and got hold in the reality, people that imagine things like "i have a crush on that character" is a symptom of getting lose of reality, not matter how i look at it, especially on the net that people can make things like they "joking" and stuff, as you said you can never know the situation of people. i also admit that in my teen years i had kinda of escapism with anime, but it didn't go in those ways.
it's not bad to be addictive to anime, i had addiction with cola before, but to use anime to escape the grounds of reality i will never speak of and despite it to my heart and seeing people like this really make my heart hurt. there's clear differences of those 3 things.

banned because addiction to me is unhealthy escapism, the reason we get addicted to things is always due to some past trauma, coming out in ways that impede us from living our lives properly. there's a healthy balance to everything, and addiction is when you cant hold yourself back from doing something, even if its to the detriment to your quality of life - a lack of balance.
i completely agree that too much escapism is a bad thing, and that obviously when you become detached from reality in that way it becomes a problem, but I don't see how saying "this is my favourite character, and if they were real I would have a crush on them" is a problem really. they're not hurting anyone, and that it really doesn't mean anything. when it starts to develop into actual romantic feelings, then that's probably because they have some other underlying issues that you don't know about, because no one with good quality of life would allow themselves to drop to that level.
the people you're referencing are severely mentally ill. there arent many people like that, and not everyone with a waifu/husbando thinks that way. to most people it's just a joke, and I don't think you need to be so hung up on it

escapism on the other hand unlike addiction is a matter of a choice that you want to use computer/alcohol to escape life. but as we said, escapism can be good at times, but too much of it isn't good and escapism of forgetting the value of life is truly unhealthy. on the other hand, addiction is something people have, you can cal it a problem, it surely a problem, but if it in the right manner, it can be good.

addiction is when you physically cant control it, when you cant stop. addiction is a problem, there's no other way of putting it, I don't understand how you think you can use addiction to your advantage. addiction is when it does disturb your life. if you arent letting it, you arent addicted, you just enjoy it.
escapism is just the act of losing yourself and occupying your mind with something else and is no more of a choice than addiction. you usually get addicted to things because they provide escapism (unless the substance is chemically addictive like nicotine), meaning you can actually get addicted to anything.
there's no such thing as 'good addiction', as addiction is literally a problem. as I already said, a reason a lot of people get addicted to things is when they provide escapism, so when people get addicted, they're escaping too much from their real life. its a misbalance of real life and fiction, because if you don't have enough escapism in your life, you can become incredibly stressed.
there is a balance to everything :)

and though addiction is not from choice, there's level in there - you can came through it and rehab, you can let it consume you but put boundaries and if you are not strong enough it might eat you all day. a man (or a woman) need to know himself, if he have habit to being addicted to things easily though he can come through them, he can use the addicting for his own advantage and give boundaries, from one point he may not rehab but he don't let the addiction to effect his life so much.

and as for escapism, again, it depends in what, i don't think that anime should be for escapism, you may disagree with me, but i believe a vacation from work or stuff is much better escapism than media, media should be to entertain, not to consume human lives, it's not wrong to be addictive to it, and as i'm in MAL i'm sure everyone here addicted to anime/manga, but to use anime/manga to escape the reality is wrong.

banned our definitions for each are the same: addiction is a situation where the joy of the human causes him to want do it over and over from that pleasure, while escapism is situation where the human want to make some activity he love and enjoy to forget and leave his reality for whatever reason. the only thing is that you says is that accordingly the escapism is driven by his addicted manor and i say: no, addictive at the start it's by the joy and pleasure the human get for the first time, and after that he get addicted to it, but his choice to overcome the addicted is still there, and he can rehab and overcome his addicted, but if he want nor don't have the power, he is driven by his addiction. escapism on the other way is not the problem of his will if he don't want or want, but the human choose to run away from reality by sink himself on something else.
now, listen to this: i have living 27 and a half already, i have experience in my left to tell apart between them, i have been in both, i admit in my teenage years i used anime to escape from reality, it's true that escapism uses what the person addicted to, but addiction is another entirely part in the will of a person - addiction can drive human crazy and think about it all days : "when i will get home i will hear that music/watch movies", escapism is the controlled will of a person.
