I still think they are minor in comparison to spoiling the entirety of Zero just to avoid these spoilers.

All F/SN routes spoils F/Z in the same way, if one starts with UBW Fate/Zero will already be spoiled, so there's not much difference. And those plot points that F/Z
spoils doesn't play a big role in its story, while in Heaven's Feels they do

And the same could be said for Zero, as it spoils the plot twists that occur at the end of all routes

In the end it's just a matter of preference, but I prefer to start Fate/stay night more as it has actual worldbuilding (referring to the VN) and after all it was the intended order.

Yeah in the end it's just personal preference tbh.
I actually watched Zero AFTER Stay Night , and I enjoyed Zero more , and was disappointed that I spoiled the show for myself , because of which it didn't got a 10/10 from me.
Don't get me wrong tho, I liked stay night too.
I think I just don't want people to go through the same shit? Lol

Maybe it is , it personally didn't work for me , maybe I am just a special case. i don't know
In my honest , subjective opinion , Zero is a better show , and it's not worth spoiling the entirety of it , even though it's supposed to be the 'intended order" There is a reason ufotable released it first , and even changed Shirou's character to a little less cheerful , just to match Zero's tone. And even a character from Zero made a cameo appearance in it.

But whatever.

Yup, Fate/Zero is widely recognized as the best anime in the Fate franchise, which is also shown by its rating and popularity here on MAL. I also liked it the most but I've heard some people who complain they have no idea what's going and that the pace is too slow and they dropped it. So ye, it poses some risks to watch it first. And sometimes the purpose of an anime is not to see what happened but to see how things happened. As I see your Senjougahara profile pic, a decent comparison is Kizumonogatari in the Monogatari series. You know roughly what happened but still wanted to see how, right?

Tbh I really don't get the critique that people don't get what's going on. Like , the whole first episode was dedicated to explain the holy grail's rules and shit. And you literally just have to pay attention there , that's it.
I think I didn't mind the Kizu one cause it wasn't the best adaptation in Monogatari Series in terms of plot? I actually don't know.

It fulfills basically everything I want from a franchise. But its cursed to always have flawed adaptations. Both VN are easily the best written works in the series and it isn't that close but anime wise Zero is the best adapted.

But aside from the mainline works its very hit or miss.

In summary read the VN you fucking scrubs.

From the outside looking in. The first thought that comes to mind is where to start. Second, at least for the ones done by ufotable, the sheer beauty of the scenes.

one of the most iconic anime franchises, basically put the now iconic ufotable's name on the mat, a game changer in animation and thought to be one of the best animated series out there.

Hm my first Fate/ anime was UBW and after having seen Illya, FSN and Zero I still found UBW the most entertaining of the bunch. Least favorite... so far Zero. If I ever get around to the others then this may change.

My thoughts on the fandom... it shouldn't take itself so seriously. A lot of people are put off by the idea of having to watch so much content just to get a gist of what's going on. As long as they don't start at HF (heard they cut a lot of set up) it should be OK. They can always watch the rest of the franchise later.

I like the idea of ancient wizarding families fighting over who gets to have one's wish come true through servant elimination.

I've seen Zero and UBW, and that's all I'm ever gonna see.

Zero was great and UBW was okay. I tried looking into the rest of the franchise, pretty much just went "NOPE" and never touched the franchise again. I'm not watching the spin-off shows and I'm not playing their shitty games. You can't make me!

Edit: I keep forgetting about this one, but I also saw the first episode of Fate/Apocrypha back when it aired in 2017 and then dropped it immediately.

Fate Zero/Fate Heaven's feel- Personal Favourites...REALLY REALLY GOOD....Great in every aspect!!!

Fate UBW-Very good/enjoyable/indispensable for a good experience with Heaven's Feel

Everything else- A shitty adaptation/ A shitty spin-off/ A shitty alternative universe/ A shitty spin-off for one of the alternative universes....basically...just cash grabs

That's it...Everything that's not done be ufotable gives the franchise a bad reputation...of a franchise too hard to get into, messy, confusing, with some bad writting and an overall clusterfuck

im a huge fate fan, and i liked all of what they have brought out now. I even sold my soul to Fate/Grand Order the game.

There are tons of waifu's
There is ton of lore
There is plenty of action
The animation of Type-moon is on god level

All in all, the size of the franchise, the relative good connection between all installments and the consistency of high quality is what i like about Fate. I still need to finish the Kaleid linner prima series and the second movie of Heavens Feel and then i've consumed all of anime. Then imma move onto the manga's and maybe the light novels.

"Just because you're correct doesn't mean you're right"

I agree with what you said...It's correct and true that Lerche has done some good work on Carnival Phantasm...but Carnival Phantasm is a parody series of almost the entire Nasuverse...having characters from Shingetsutan Tsukihime/ Melty Blood/ Mahoutsukai no Yoru...etc...not just Fate-//- ....So I don't think you're right saying that Carnival Phantasm is a good series from the Fate franchise...because it's not an exclusively Fate series...But a parody of the Nasuverse as a whole.

I don't consider Carnival Phantasm a Fate series...But(again)...yes...It's nonetheless a good series and a good comedy...

I'm still a bit of a Fate newb, but i really like it so far. I'm following the original VN route order; i started with F/SN (2006) and i'm making my way through UBW S2 right now. Will watch Zero after the Heaven's Feel movies.

Anyway, the whole "secret battle royale with super-powered weirdoes" concept scratches a very specific itch that i love, so i think it has potential to become one of my favorite franchises in the long run. I plan to watch everything there is of Fate just 'cause i find its whole universe so interesting.

My experience with the fandom has...not been great so far. Episode discussion forums are chock-full of VN elitists nitpicking the shit out of everything and getting salty over the adaptations not being 1:1 carbon copies of the source. As if it was possible for an anime, with all its time constraints, to include every single dialogue/monologue from a such a long-ass VN in the first place.

The fandom is really toxic tbh. They treat people who prefer Zero as a somewhat inferior specimen lol.
They bring up VN everytime someone criticises the anime , not realising that bringing up the VN in an anime only discussion means that the anime didn't portray the themes properly. Which actually strengthens the argument of the people criticising the adaptation.

That's what I noticed too, they seem a bit insecure about the fact that F/Z is the best received Fate anime so they love to bash it while acting like F/SN is some flawless masterpiece

Fate Zero is the only great entry in franchise. It is dark, gritty and wasn't focused on 'waifu bait' like most of the other movies/shows are.

Ufotable's Blade Works and Heaven's Feel are fine, I would put Blade Works ahead of Heaven's Feel since from what I have seen in the last two movies that route is trying way too hard to be edgy. But unlike many other Visual novel adaptations it doesn't stick to a single route, as a result I am becoming less and less engaged with the story each time I watch a new route.

Additionally, there are two further reasons why I find them to be meh.

One, Shirou is such a generic anime protagonist that it pisses me off.

Two, the whole show is feels like 'waifu bait' with no character or substance, every girl acts like Shirou is the be all and end all of the universe and every show/movie feels like a 'girl of week' sort of scenario, where Shirou's goal is to get with another girl.

I am not even going to speak on the other franchises/entries, I really couldn't care less about Grand Fate Order and it's sequels/prequels/spinoffs, as well as the spinoffs/sequels of Fate/Stay. The only reason I started watching the rest of the franchise was because I loved Fate/Zero, though nothing I have watched in the series since has been as good, once I watch the final movie of the Heaven's Feel route I will be absolutely done with this series.

Hmmm honestly I think is a bit confusing as a franchise. Is not a very friendly watch when you don't have any knowledge of the source material. That being said, I think overall is quite nice tho, but Fate/Zero is superior in basically every aspect anyway.

Studio Deen butchered Fate/stay night that's why. If stay night got a a better studio it would be better than zero.

I am a huge fan. Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel is still one of my favorite things ever and is the best thing in the franchise. Its sequel Hollow Ataraxia, and prequel Fate/Zero are also amazing. Other spin-offs and stuff are of varying degrees of quality but none come close to the aforementioned three.

On the anime side of things Fate/Zero is the best, followed by Heaven's Feel movies. Other anime are either bad adaptations or adaptations of a not-so-good or bad spin-off.

I'd also separately mention Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan and Carnival Phantasm which are bloody amazing and some of the best things to come out of the franchise if you are already fan of the original cast + Tsukihime in case of Carnival Phantasm.

They can be pretty cool, I like epic combat with awesome abilities. I'm a fan of Dragon Ball so yeah.

I think some of them are a bit slow at first, and the fact that they use huge effects and sounds for even simply abilities with little power is a bit annoying and tasteless, but those are my only criticisms at the moment.

The idea of historical characters fighting and all the other things about fate universe is brilliant but i always feel like scenario could have been better at animes. There is so much material it's like you have all the tools to make masterpiece so when i watch anything Fate related my expectations are very high but most of the time i find animes lacking.

Played the VN Stay/night which is not in my top 3 but really good.

I love Fate and I'm so glad I got into it years ago. I'm anime only though, so I haven't played any of the games or read the light novels, but I've seen every TV and Movie adaptation of Fate.

I'm not even gonna try to join the 'watch order' party in this thread. That's a whole separate issue

  • My favorite so far has been Fate/Apocrypha, which surprises me since I love ufotable so much.

  • My least favorite would probably be Fate/Extra, just because I have absolutely no idea what is happening when I've watched it. I love Shaft but they make things hard to understand.

  • I don't know about the fandom. It scares me. I know there is so much more to this fandom but I'll probably stay an anime-only fan. I spend a fair bit of time on the Wiki, though.

Also. I get so excited when I get people into Fate. It's a whole thing. I got @arajiki to start Fate because she wanted to see the first Heaven's Feel movie with me when it was airing in theaters. She binged Fate/Stay night, Fate/Zero, and Unlimited Blade works all in a single weekend (I still have no idea how). It's been years since she started the franchise but she's finally almost done watching everything.

Fate/Zero then Stay Night (2006) followed by Unlimited Bladeworks and finally the Heaven Feel's films. Honestly, the only Fates worth watching are the Emiya-centric ones. I thoroughly enjoyed Stay Night (2006) since it reminds me of that golden era of the mid-2000's.
Go ahead, reply. I'm not going to read it.
