THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
An unusual show but I kinda like the style. We got the detective agency and a case for the opening episode.

That Takuboku guy is someone worth to keep an eye on with their intellect. Setting takes place in a historical-ish setting so the episode felt rather refreshing. Looks like this anime has a lot of potential imo.

Kind of a heavy setting as the anime just gets right into how a best friend died 10 years ago... Basically starting with introducing us to a character who's already dead. And then goes back to a time before that for its actual story, it seems. All this taking place during the Meiji era which also has its own oddities.

Curious to see how this one will unfold, the start is promising and interesting for sure.

Another anime that fictionalized real-life Japanese legendary authors? Sorry I'm not excite about this anymore. Is this a new trend set by Bungo Stray Dog? Now we have Bungou to Alchemist and this (though this is the adaptation from the novel from 20 years ago)

Also, I hate how it open with the death of lovable character, this is why I don't watch the critically acclaimed Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. Real world is sad enough, anime is my escapism.

It’s odd that it opened with them stating someone was dead then immediately jumped back in time to tell you the story of said dead person, but I don’t hate it. I’m usually not one to watch thing that I know have a tragic end but the visuals and the story so far will probably have me checking out the next episode.

bruh yet another show this season with a banger OP.

also ngl this show kinda seems like a mix of Housekishou Richard and Showa Rakugo. I hope it ends up being more of the latter though :P

Art style looks amazing, surprisingly has a really light tone to it, and character designs look pretty cool. Can see this becoming popular with the female demographic lmao

The detective seems like a fun guy so it'll definitely hurt to see him die. Anyway interesting first episode. I like both of the main characters. Seems like the story will be good so looking forward to this.

Wasn't expecting a Mori Ogai cameo but I'll take it! Interesting premise, looking forward to how this unfolds.

Quick edit to add that our beloved but tragically doomed character's real life counter-part died April 13, 1912... wonder if its airing today was purposeful or serendipitous?

I wonder what would've happened if it wasn't for the blood that caught Ishikawa's attention :P

Pretty enjoyable so far and nice fanservice opening.

Watched this because one of the main characters is voiced by one of my fav seiyuus. Liked it more than I expected. This was a great start into an intriguing mystery, can't wait for more, even if it starts with a big sad and I am not really good with those <.<

This was good. The undertone of sadness from the insight that Ishikawa will die very soon really strengthens the nostalgic air of the show.

A little iffy about the lack of major female characters, but since it's adapted from a novel, I have high hopes.

So if you want to know the MC's character's name is Takuboku Ishikawa and if you google it you will see he was a real person.

But this was a very beautifully animated episode and I enjoyed its action and also found the opening and ending songs and animation quite nice as well. So I will keep watching.

Im reserving judgement. As a police procedural style show it has merit. First eps layed down some world building foundations but MC was a bit tricky to think about, was he coming or going.

Usually, an anime's art style can let us know what to expect from the story, but the unusual art style here is making it so hard to tell if this story would be light hearted or dark.
The outlines are coloured and the colour palette is kind of light, which may mean a warm and/or cute story. But, the colour for the outlines is dark blue, and that makes the story look like it may have some mind twisting scenes. Also, despite the light colour palette, they have used quite a heavy contrast for lights and shadows, and that's usually done with extremely dark stories. I seriously don't know what to expect; this anime can either be horrible or it can be good or even amazing, and the uncertainty excites me. (Though, I hope it's something good. There aren't a lot of good anime this season.)

The poet guy looks so cute. Also, it seems the characters here were actual people in history, and their designs match their real life counterparts.

I noticed a detail with the letter that didn't seem correct. When ink or water spills over paper, it also goes under it. I am guessing blood isn't that different. So, there shouldn't be a perfect rectangle there. And, based on the scarlet colour of the blood, we can know it was still warm and not even close to drying. Ignoring the detail about the colour, when the murder had happened, the blood was definitely in its liquid state. Which means, if somebody were to pick up the letter, the rectangular shape would be changed since it's quite easy to smear liquid. I am not sure if the blood would move inside the contours of the rectangular shape, though. (I am not sure if I made any sense. I am just an artist who has accidentally spilled water over papers a lot more often than I want to admit.)

can someone explain why a killer would plan to force someone write a letter in a brothel? it's already suspicious that 2 guys rent a room in there. How would a knife kill not make any noise and screams? Why burn the letter in your own office and leave the ashes there?

edit: Also, how does a knife kill splash blood like a shootgun.

When Kyousuke first shows up and talks about how his friend died 10 years ago, my first thought was "Ah, this guy looks like he's tasted pee only to discover that it was actually water."

I have a feeling that Ishikawa kills himself, so I'm already preparing myself for that depressing part of the story to happen.

Planting the evidence was pretty cool move, I didn't expect that. But the rest of the episode was kind of dull for me. Hopefully it only gets better from here when they've set up all the characters and encounter more interesting mysteries! Really good episode, amazing OST at the end.

In most cases, the MAL Average Scores don't mean anything, here is a question: were the works made before 2000 all shit?
Why are they so damn scarce in the Top 50? Think about how MAL is quite literally a filtered amount of the Anime fanbase.

Here's a timeline of the Top 15 in which you can check that, almost always, the scores are affected by the freshness, popularity and other factors that have nothing to do with quality.

If the knife slices a major blood vessel, it will 100% spray blood like a hose. Happens all the time. Plus this one didn't look like a gunshot spray. It was very linear and directional, like from a sword slash.

And regarding the letter burning, it is Ishikawa who plants the ashes there (you can see him briefly fiddling with something in his yukata). Ishikawa himself is aware that no one would leave such obvious evidence, and says as much.

Personally I'm very excited for this one. More than that, I am happy that something so different and not exactly commercially viable is being made at all. I saw a comparison to Bungo Stray Dogs, and that is erroneous because this is nothing like that. BSD is supernatural fantasy featuring bishonen versions of famous novelists, while this is more of a light reimagining of a literary figure (perhaps the author of the original novel connected fictional detective Kosuke Kindaichi with the writer Kyosuke Kindaichi, who was a close associate of Takuboku Ishikawa, and thus came up with this alt history of them as detectives, with a healthy helping of Sherlock and Watson thrown in). Even the character designs are quite close to how they looked IRL (in contrast, BSD's Dazai looks absolutely nothing like Dazai, same with Bungo to Alchemist).

It is sad that the score is so low. The character interactions and camaraderie is nice, the OP is a banger and the ED is really cool as well, the art style is unique, light and pleasant yet sad and muted (my only art negative is the low effort trees and leaves, could've been better), and the setting is lovely. Need more anime like this.

I got Sherlock Holmes and The Wind Rises vibes from this which was nice. Also liked the friendship shown between the two leads, so I'm looking forward to both those aspects being explored more in future episodes.

I'm honestly confused by the low (by MAL standards) score. A refreshing art style and setting with an artful and somewhat laid-back approach to Sherlock Holmes-esque mystery/crime, tinged with a sense that the journey will be bittersweet as we learn about Ishikawa's fate. What's not to like?

A fine start, but unfortunately just reminds me too much of simple mystery detective shows done before. Concerning the novel that came out in 1999 (some 20+ years), guess this was normalcy for its time that went unnoticed.

Having a backdrop such as the Meiji era is unique, and the characters are just as eccentric...being detectives based on fictionalized versions of real people.

So far, Ishikawa's got my radar for all the weird but good reasons, while Kyousuke is pretty much a wimpy assistant at this point.

Tanka poems are pretty much the intergral part of the series as a whole, the classical Japanese poetry and part of literature: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanka

Seems like a good one to waste some time to.

This anime does open a little depressing which predicts the death of one of the main characters, but the refreshing and pastel colors it uses to recreate the scenario that lead to the final end. Also the music choice is very nice and vibrant i would suggest as i feel i am enjoying the poems and the scenery together with the characters.
Unfortunately, I dont have any big expectation of this anime as only a relaxing one to enjoy while drinking coffee at home and curled up to just plainly enjoy the mystery behind those murders.

Although the mystery was not solved yet, very good introduction. This anime reminds me why I really enjoy historical anime. It gives me the same vibes as Rakugo and Uta Koi but with detective theme like Conan. Many people say it's boring, but I disagree. This is more interesting than the other anime this season.

Also the cast of seiyuu is splendid.

MAL general userbase want cute girls and action lol. That's how I see it. This anime will probably be underrated compared to what's trending this season (high school or isekais as usual). I really hope the Rakugo fans come and watch this cus it'll probably appeal to them more.

Quite ominous start, saying that the Ishikawa dies within the next 10 years. Ishikawa seems like a pretty interesting character, poet turned detective, so it is kinda sad to know his future already. I wonder if Kindaichi is also going to do some detective cases or just going to accompany Ishikawa in those cases.
