More than a million cases of coronavirus have been registered globally, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University - another grim milestone as the world grapples with the spreading pandemic.

Nearly 53,000 people have died and more than 210,000 have recovered, according to the US university's figures.

The US accounts for the most cases; Italy the highest death toll.

The disease, Covid-19, first emerged in central China three months ago.

Though the tally kept by Johns Hopkins records one million confirmed cases, the actual number is thought to be much higher.

It took a month and a half for the first 100,000 cases to be registered. A million was reached after a doubling in cases over the past week.

Nearly a quarter of cases have been registered in the United States, while Europe accounts for around half
Well folks, that all in the last 3 months, I wonder the results in the next 3.

Our girl has come a long way since January, let's give her a moment of silence to commemorate her accomplishments so far.

it doubled in one week, from 500,000 to 1,000,000, albeit a lot of the increase is due to the numbers exploding in the USA.

Scary realization this number might be underestimated due to lack of testing.

Have you noticed everyone says its only like flu as the death rate is 1%, nothing to worry about?

They are including those still suffering which skews the figures. The death rate is about 20% everywhere when you compare those who died again those who overcame it.

People would be a lot more careful if they thought they had a 1 in 5 chance of dying.

They showed a sped up graph of cases and deaths, the US is going to top both in a couple of days so it's going to get a whole lot worse there. Hardly surprising when a big percentage cannot even afford medical care.

Expected I believe, atleast its still a small number.

@QPR Not everyone is good with numbers, so I agree with what you said about a heightened sense of caution if they really knew the numbers.

Well no, the death rates is still only 1,8%. 20% If you're in a high risk group.

I didn't know you could die twice.

@QPR
Death rate is higher than the flu but flu annually kills as much as 500,000. Covid-19 is no where near that total death count currently. So it's not as bad as the flu in one way and worse in another. Does have potential if it's not taken care of. It is worse than SARS was though higher death rate and higher total deaths. No idea how you came up with 20%. It's 25% but that isn't accounting for people not tested who recovered perhaps never even knowing they had anything and how countries like Italy with older population would mess with the total average. More time goes on the more accurate the numbers should start to become. Also there are probably people tested positive that didn't get retested to confirm they recovered. Recovered likely is more focused on the ones who were in critical condition.

The reason it's not as bad yet is the steps we are taking to stop it spreading and we haven't run out of ICU beds yet. Then they young won't get beds and their death rate will shoot up. At the moment it's killing old people even with ICU care, it will kill everyone without ICU care.

We'd lose 20% of western and 50% of third world populations if we carried on as normal.
