Why is Sunshine listed as 'alternative setting' in relation to the original Love Live?

Shouldn't it be the sequel, considering it happens after the original and the characters from there are mentioned?

Because it's just an exact copy of the original Love Live. It's the same story, the same character designs and the same personalities. They just changed the place, switched the personalities between some of the character designs and changed Nico to Yoshino. The producers didn't even try to hide it, because during the whole show, the characters say that they should do the exact same stuff as Muse did. Writing the new story took them not more than a few hours, cause there was nothing really new. So "alternative setting" fits pretty good. At least better than sequel.
