MyAnimeList has just launched a brand new Free Manga service with manga chapters from five titles—available for free! All you need is a MyAnimeList account and you're ready to start reading.

Thanks to the support of the series' publishers who made this service possible, we are also excited to announce that the service is open to our world-wide community. We know many of our users live in countries with small licensed manga markets or are otherwise unable to easily access manga legally. With this Free Manga service, we hope to create more opportunities for all MyAnimeList users to read manga and discover new titles. While the service has opened with only five manga series, our goal is to keep expanding the catalogue with the support of publishers.

How does it work? The Free Manga service acts similar to a magazine: chapters will be made available on specific time cycles, so you can't read all chapters at once. Titles will also not be fixed: series will disappear some time after the last free chapters have been made available, replaced by first chapters of new series. Finally, of the titles we have so far, not all chapters will be made available for free; if you'd like to continue reading the series beyond the free chapters, you will need to purchase those volumes from eBook sellers.

We hope everyone will give the Free Manga service a try—and keep an eye on it for new titles, too!

Edit: Unfortunately, Japan is excluded from the Free Manga service. All other locations should be able to access normally. Please let me know if you encounter issues and you are not in Japan.

I’m extremely excited we’re able to now offer free manga to our users! By showing your support and reading the available titles, we’ll hopefully be able to add more content in the future. I hope everyone enjoys this new benefit to using MAL!

It's completely useless.

Sounds fun!
That way even manga which have yet to get an adaptation may get the attention and love they need to get people to buy them
Good idea

The concept sounds similar to the MANGA Plus service by SHUEISHA.

Coincidentally, SHUEISHA holds a 3.60% stake in Media Do, the parent company of MyAnimeList.

Ah yes. Another for-profit new feature.
Meanwhile bots are downranking Chihayafuru III all to the hell, manga database entry queue is behind by over 6000 because of inadequate number of DB mods, and site itself hasn't had any meaningful interface updates in years.

This is amazing! i just started reading Somali to Mori no Kamisama which is my first ever manga, and it´s amazing so far. I can´t belive i never read any manga before this one, i belive i always thought it was easier to just watch the anime of a manga rather than reading it.

From now on i will deff read way more manga!

Thank you MAL for this! Much love!

First of all, great! ^.^ This way one can dip their toes in one series and decide for themselves if they are worth it.

But, now I'm curious. I looked into Baki in the free manga service and, at the bottom, there is a button which sends you to Amazon or Bookwalker to purchase the manga in ebook format. Does this mean, ebooks bought on those services, are going to be integrated so to be read directly through MAL or is it just an indication for where to buy the manga in question?

Edit: grammar

Wow this is awesome, big up for this one.

The reader is pretty great, no problems at all, and the fact that you guys got Baki in there is crazy.

Keep up the good work, hopefully we manage to make MAL get its hands on the big running series soon.

Big support for this.

I RotFLMAO'ed at the manga choice. Literally, the only one at least somewhat decent (i.e. not bad, just mediocre) is pirate Somali manga. Everything other sits between outright horrible and just flat out bad. In short, it's the manga that nobody wants to read anyway, so Media Do not loose any money over people reading it for free. What can I say - great way to make people interested in buying manga, LoL.

There is such thing as shit taste. Only idiots think that every "work of art" should have the same value.

Persona anime are good. Deal with it.

Except they keep the FREE part of the FREE Manga going all the way to the end! At least for older titles. I'm nearly up to chapter 50 of Tokyo Ghoul and not a penny spent.

Well, that's great and all but.. holy fuck does the reader suck, and there is no long-strip mode? seriously are you expecting me to click tens of times to turn pages every chapter? I never understood why would anyone want to use the paged mode over the long-strip, who even invented that shit to begin with? shit's unpractical af.

It is made to emulate the flipping of a book. I prefer to click over scroll. It's not even a problem on Tablet anyways.

The only thing real books have over digital ones is the ability to read for hours without getting your eyes drained, and maybe the nice feeling of holding and touching it with your hands, but paged mode emulate none of that, it only make you flip pages when you could scroll through them, and you'd have to jump around and zoom-in/out every now and then to read small panels, which is rarely the case for the long-strip where you only need to make the pages fit the width of the screen and you're golden.
Well, to each their own I guess.

you could have suggested a scroll mode instead of that rant lol

but i agree if they are worried about overloading bandwidth then they can just do lazy loading of images anyway

Lol sometimes I get triggered by weird things, I actually don't care if they added it here or not because I most likely won't be using it anyway. The backward ass idea of having the paged mode as the default (or even the only) option in most manga reading websites is what pisses me off.

Not from Japan but it’s strange that a site dedicated to Japanese culture would block Japan from using one of their services. Is it a licensing issue with the Manga or the authors are worried the Japanese might just turn towards a MAL for their pleasure reading instead of paying for the actual books?

Nice feature, but with room for improvement. The controls feel a bit awkward, when zoomed the page flip option is disabled on the mouse. Try reading with a 125%-150% zoom with mouse only.

After all those years of human evolution in the tecnological field, they choose to use a horizontal reader without a option for a vertical one(scroll up/down).

But, thats a great feature for the website! Very nice.
