| Uta∽Kata (dunno if you'll count 2004 as early 2000s) is probably not the most messed up psychological anime out there, but a good amount of it does get into the messed-up kind of territory. It's actually pretty comparable to Puella Magi Madoka Magica (despite Uta∽Kata coming out 7 whole years before that anime), so if you liked that show and want more psychological magical girl shows like it, definitely give this show a shot. I don't think it beats Madoka Magica, but it's certainly a really underrated anime in my opinion. |

| Kanashimi no Belladonna (Rx- Hentai) aside from being made in the 70's fits everything else, in the form of being really trippy. Chika Gentou Gekiga: Shoujo Tsubaki 1992, somewhat disturbing/unnerving and pretty trippy Paprika '06 mostly wtf moments, but think it might fit what you are wanting |
