Mine has been based on childhood memory of the show, memes, OP / ED, hate, ratings. What are the other factors? If any, share an instance which led you to watch an Anime which you might have never watched.

For me there are many but I'll share a funny one -
I always read Violet Evergarden as Violent Evergarden, so I skipped the anime for long think it's something with lot of violence and gore. Later I realized it's the opposite when I watched a video of anime reviews on YouTube.

I usually read a lot of manga and check each season for an adaptation. Other than that I'll try to watch the first episode of most shows to see if it's interesting, word of mouth, hype on forums to catch things I missed. Like when my friend told me to watch Made in Abyss after it finished airing, a masterpiece that I completely missed.

User recommendations on MAL don't get enough credit. There's so many great series I've discovered through those.

I usually discover anime through forums (browsing old forums and seeing what people liked in the 2000s and the early 2010s can also be cool), streaming sites (something I see on Hulu, Funimation, etc), recommendations from friends or my brother (his recommendations make up a good amount of my manga list too), sauce from memes, recommendations or anime I see while browsing on MAL (front page and user recs, seasonal page, interesting anime from people's lists, etc.), and Youtube videos (Under the Scope's two videos on top 50 anime helped me find a ton of good anime when I was getting more into it).

For deciding to watch something, if it's controversial and talked about a lot I have sometimes checked whatever it is out to get my own opinion, but most often it's either:
1. I have been thinking about it a lot with some other anime, so I have higher priorities on my plan to watch list.
2. It's part of a series I've seen and I want to watch more.
3. If the shows I'm watching and have on hold just aren't that engaging (which thankfully isn't the case right now), I might start a series that I think I will enjoy more (for example, I watched the first episode of the Mom isekai, then proceeded to watch the first 4 episodes of Megalo Box).
4. If I am doing a challenge for the Anime Watching Challenges Club, I will watch a movie or show to fulfil whichever requirement it's for (it's usually from my watching or PTW list).

Deppends on what I'm craving at the moment, if I feel like watching shoujo I'll google "top shoujo anime" or view a random shoujo I know is well known and see the recommendations.Sometimes I'd browse MAL categories or randomly google top anime shows too.

I think I just read about random anime on the internet, get curious, and check it out. Anitubers are also a great source to find recommendations for anime. Before seasonals start airing, I add the anime that look interesting to my plan to watch list.

Now, as to how I decide which anime to watch next, I'm not entirely sure. I've been stressed with homework for the past few years, so unless it's an airing anime, I usually pick a light hearted anime from my plan to watch list, but I will eventually get to the more serious anime.

I usually decide to watch a certain anime if...
1. The reception is good (in other words everyone can't shut up about it)
2. The premise is interesting to me

I usually discover anime through anitubers, OP's and also through memes.

I usually pick shows by briefly skim reading some synopses and watching ones that interest me.
Another thing I do is search up shows with genres I like (e.g. horror) and choosing from there. Lot's of people have also been recommending me many different anime on the forums, and I'm slowly going through them lol

I follow directors, animators, etc who I already know I like, or just consider what kind of anime I am interested in seeing, like by year, genre, length, etc and just pick something from MAL. If something is highly regarded by people with similar taste I may check it out as well.

This is where I get a lot of what I watch from since I make a new LF anime thread every time I run out of stuff to watch. Also from friend recommendations.

I have two ways in which I pick what to watch.

1. Seasonal anime, I see the cover art and
make my decision which to try out.

2. I look at anime from the 2000s or 1990s, or even further back and again pick whatever looks good enough to eat.

I read a lots of manga so every season I already know most of the adaptation.
And I try other seasonnals randomly.

For non seasonnal anime I know them from my middle-school researches around 10 years ago. I know almost all the importants animes plot that I haven't seen yet.

That's why sometimes I don't understand when some people say that they didn't know manga like Dorohedoro or Vinland Saga before the anime. For me it's important to know at least cults mangas.
But it's cool that those adaptation make some publicity. But please when adaptations are trash like Levius one (on netflix) read the source material. x)

Typical reasons are:
* this OP/ED sounds nice
* these character designs look nice
* this premise seems interesting/matches my tastes

I used to take recommendations from friends, too, but these days I try to limit my discovery, since my PTW is already huge.

I once saw a pic of two magical girls, one using a battle axe, another with a sniper rifle and had to know what is up with this series. That was how I discovered the Nanoha extended universe.

Since then I've been drawn to anime by how unique and standalone they are from others

Lately a lot has either been from friend's recommendations/what they are watching, seeing OPs or even a few AMVs. If I check out the premise and it seems to poke my interest, I give it a shot. If it doesn't work out after the first few episodes, it happens.

Looking for anime, I usually check out genres, qny important people, recommendations, etc.

In deciding which anime to watch next, I have a very complicated system.

My "Watching" list looks like this:

Shows I'm actually watching (12 right now)
Shows from creators I've already seen at least one thing (Kids on The Slope, Future Boy Conan, Tsuritama, etc)
All A-1 Pictures Shows I'm interested in (Sound of The Sky, Oofuri, etc.)
All J.C.Staff Shows I'm interested in (Prison School, Me & You 1 & 2, etc.)
All Gainax Shows I'm interested in (FLCL, Gunbuster+Diebuster, etc.)
All KyoAni shows I'm interested in (Nichijou, Hibike Euphonium, etc.)
Shows that I need to skip content to have a better experience (Haruhi, Kimi ni Todoke, Nadia)
Shows from 2018 I haven't watched (1: Comic Girls)
Shows from 2017 I haven't watched (4+: ACCA 13, Onihei, Mahoujin Guru Guru, MMO Junkie)
Shows from 2016 I haven't watched (5+: Fune wo Amu, Drifters, Sansha Sanyou, New Game, Genroku Rakugo)
Shows from 2015 I haven't watched (3+: Kekkai Sensen, Sore ga Seiyuu, Assassination Classroom)

Mostly I just end up watching stuff I see talked about on mecha forums, including the non-mecha stuff that gets brought up here and there (which is how I ended up finding out about Grenadier and Dirty Pair). I've watched a fair amount of shows cuz of their appearances in Super Robot Wars too, usually cuz I wanna actually experience the show without having the game spoil too much of it for me.

Aside from that, just whatever random stuff I come across that grabs my interest for some reason or another, and seasonals that have a premise I think I'll find some enjoyment from.

I discover anime mainly through anime youtubers (seasonal rundowns and also other anime videos) and youtube in general (amvs, top 10 ____ anime, etc.). I usually skip through recommendation videos just to see what they list and I only go to them if I'm really stuck but have a specific genre I want to watch or find.

I decide what to watch through what I'm in the mood for and pick from my long list of stuff that I either haven't finished or am yet to start.
I have a OneNote page dedicated to it which serves as my plan to watch list. I also put manga, webtoons, manhua and manhwa on it.

The anime part is divided into 5 main sections:
- Stuff I'm waiting to be released (sequels I look forward to that haven't started airing)
- Ongoing anime that I'm watching as it comes out
- Shows I'm waiting to start until they finish airing, shows I've started and haven't finished (basically the on-hold feature on MAL)
- Things that I plan to watch and haven't started that have finished airing

The last of these is divided into what could be called genre but is actually more of a mood rating. I have over 50 shows divided into the categories of:
- Thriller/escape/horror/psychological
- Action/dark fantasy/power fantasies
- Supernatural
- Romance/drama/slice of life
- Slow fantasy/adventure/slice of life
- Comedy
- Feel good shounen/sports
- Cry porn
- Isekai bullshit/fantasy/adventure/game
- Superpowers/magic
- Mystery/horror/psychological
- I don't know/what the fuck
(The last one is for shows like Sarazanmai that I have no idea what to classify as)

If I see Mecha, and or cyberpunk I will watch it asap. Though I do watch acclaimed titles like Madoka Magica as to not solely rely on one genre and to see critically acclaimed anime.

I see people putting down their complicated watch systems and I feel obliged to add mine.

The way I discover shows is pretty simple: If I have 1a) seen a clip or something from an episode or have seen a trailer for the anime, 1b) seen the opening or ending theme, or 1c) have read the description or otherwise already know what it is about (because of it being well known or popular), and 2) decided that it seems interesting or that I would probably like it, then I add it to my PTW list.

If I wanted to make my life easier, I would simply watch series in the order that I added them. Instead, deciding what to watch is probably the most complicated procedures for me, lol.

Instead of picking and choosing what I'm going to watch at any given time, I decided I would rather pick out a whole bunch of series that I am going to watch in a given year, and only focus on those.
I'll go through the year adding lots of shows to my PTW (around a few hundred or so). When the new year begins I start off by moving them all to a separate list; basically clearing my PTW of anything that's not a sequel I'm waiting to start airing.

After that, I'll take that huge side-list and randomize it; I'll choose the top 50 and add them back to my PTW - these will be the shows I focus on completing during the year. The rest will stay on that side-list (which will be added to at the start of the next year).

Then the cycle continues: I'll focus on watching only the 50 shows I picked out at the beginning of the year (in addition to any seasonal anime I pick up along the way), and gradually add more and more series to my PTW.

At the end of the year I take every non-sequel show from my PTW (both the remainder of the 50 I didn't get to watch and everything else I added after the year started) and move them back to that separate list. Because I add more shows to my PTW than I can watch, my side-list grows a lot every year.

It is very common for me to add a show to my PTW every year without it ever making it into the top 50 that I actually try to watch, so I end up with a lot of duplicate entries on my side-list. This means that at the start of every year, when I randomize it, those duplicate entries add weight to the series; the more times I've added something the more likely it is to make it onto my top 50 when I randomize it, and so the more likely I am to actually get to watch it in a given year. (I like using a weighted list like this because it helps me get to the series that 1) I like, 2) others want me to watch, and 3) are fairly popular)

And that's just how I decide what to add to my list to potentially watch. What I actually decide to watch first largely depends on the time of the year. For the most part, I'll watch the [50] series in the order that I added them. However, during Summer break I'll sort them all by popularity (membership) and watch them like that; during Winter break, I'll sort them by rank (score) instead. That way I get a nice balance of quality as well as spacing out the 'good' shows.

To find out the more 'niche' anime, I use MAL recs.
For some all around gems, I look at 'critical' MAL users and add their animes scoring 9+ into my PTW.
For seasonals, top scoring of the season and most attractive art.

For seasonal anime, I pretty much look at everything airing that season and watch pvs, trailers, etc, and also read the synopsis and decide base off that. Which still ends up me picking up just about everything anyway lol.

For non-seasonal anime, I randomly select 5-7 anime from my plan to watch list using randomly generated numbers, then pick from one of them depending on what I'm in the mood to watch at that time.

Random instance: When I was first getting into anime, I saw a lot of people talking about Re:Zero, so intelligent me decided hey lets watch Ga-Rei: Zero, thinking that's the anime everyone was talking about. Pretty dumb of me, but hey, I got to watch something that I may not have?

I never really search anymore, my PTW list is way too big that I don't need to go searching for anime, I just see mentions or references of an anime, check out the premise and maybe reviews if I'm torn on it, and then add it to my list. I also check currently airing anime.

Before my PTW list became so overstuffed, there'd always be a reason why I look for new anime, like wanting more anime like Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou back then when I watched it. You can find recommendations pretty easily even without asking, and it led me to Gintama. When I wanted something to fill in the hole Naruto left in my heart I once again checked which Shounen were really recommended and HxH was heavily referenced and recommended.

My Anime journey started off with introductions and recommendations from friends.

Thereafter, I started discovering Anime titles on my own through the following channels:
- Opening / Ending Theme -> Anisong Artist -> Another Anime Title
- Community Forums -> User Avatar / Signature
- Seasonal Charts (e.g. Spring / Summer / Fall / Winter)

i'll be honest;
usually i don't care too much for op/ed/osts so majority of the time it'll be the popularity, rating/synposis on mal, friend recommendations(even though those don't go too far), if a show got a lot of hate my curiosity has probably been piqued, twitter and profiles that interest me.
