Good to see an increase for manga sales for the top series, 9 mil of last years' overtaken by a whooping 12 mil this year!
One Piece has finally been beaten and I'm sure most people were seeing this coming, in all honesty. Rumors of this were abuzz but actually seeing it happen was a little tough to come to terms with, even now to this point in fact. But hey, One Piece obviously wasn't going to retain that position forever so it's more like the start of a new era for the manga industry now (or is it?).
Pleasing to see Gotoubun no Hanayome and Kaguya-sama: Love is War join the ranks now too, credits to both the teams behind the respective anime to propel both of these to the top 10. Can't wait to see Season 2 of both of these!
Surprised that Shingeki no Kyojin manga sales have decreased, albeit slightly, from last year though. I've been keeping away from the manga intentionally so I don't know the specifics but I've been hearing a lot of rumors, speculations and reactions so I figured it was going to be in the top 5 actually. A little disappointed by this, to be frank, but I'm glad it's still in the list. It better be in the top 3 next year!
Didn't think the ln version of Tenki no Ko would fare this well either, nice surprise. Happy to see Re:Zero, Seishun Buta Yarou and Mahouka in the list too. Curious on "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto" though, hopefully an anime adaption of this is in the working so anime-onlies like I can have a go at this story.
And of course #BringBackWeeklySalesThread, thanks for reminding NeoAnkara!
Just looking at the lists, it makes me so happy that we're currently at a time where each and every of the manga shows are either getting a continuation of some format or currently airing already. A fair number of light novels too, to make things even better.
And of course #BringBackWeeklySalesThread, thanks for reminding @NeoAnkara!
Damn, that surge that Kimetsu No Yaiba got, definitely deserved. What I’m even more happier about is the Quintessential Quintuplets and Kaguya Sama:Love Is War. Both of these anime’s were great, Kaguya-Sama being on of my favourites of the year, and it’s amazing seeing the surge in popularity and sales for these two, can’t wait to see their second seasons!!! Also, where’s Dr.Stone, The Promised Neverland, Shield Hero and Beastars? Lol

I have mixed thoughts. On one hand I like both of the shows. Both are 8/10 for me. But I have seen and I am more connected to characters in OP than Demon Slayer. But I know that it will change over the period of time.
Still the light novel sales are much lower than the manga sales. Even popular series like Sao cannot compete with similarly popular series like aot and mha. Would like to see an increase there as some light novels are much better than mangas thus giving us more light novel animes. 😁
OP isn't on top for once, but KnY had a huge year with its anime adaptation so this isn't too surprising. Of course this thread has the obligatory salt, it wouldn't be a MAL thread without it xD.
DarkHeartWind said: Salty that OP was beaten? That's just how it it, more popular/better manga according to Japs won, deal with it.
Nah, I like KnY (the anime at least, didn't read the manga yet) but it had everything going in their favor. It got a new anime and the anime was adapted by fucking ufotable which is like a godsent gift. Then, seeing as it was its first anime season it had MANY people wanting more, so maaaany people started buying every volume available which is obviously a huge factor.
By now OP mostly gets its numbers from the newly released volumes (just look at the top selling volumes, damn 1st through 4th place) and since Oda takes his breaks every few weeks, there are not THAT many volumes per year.
I'm not shitting on KnY but to see if it really surpassed OP in popularity can only be seen in next year's sales when most of the newer fanbase caught up with the currently available volumes and at that point, I don't think it can beat OP (yet).
tl;dr: high quantity with good quality (KnY) will almost always beat low quantity with great quality (OP)
finally they revealed the yearly sales of other weekly jump's manga

Light novel market is much smaller compared to manga. It's why the manga adaptation of slime sells much more than the LN, for example (which is not that normal btw, manga adaptations of LN don't make big numbers like that)
Holy shit I didnt know kaguya was that huge, I'm sure its from the anime boost but still jesus, Aka has come a long way from making a canceled angsty action manga

Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me
back then, i was like "well, there is still ANN but then they also stop reporting it and then fuck me. the only way to found them is browsing hard to search forum post in mangahelper. god, what a disaster.

good adaptation didn't automatically give original source sales. as well bad adaptation either.
Ufotable did a hell of a job boosting interest in the manga and getting people to buy over 7M of the manga's previous volumes. I can image Shounen Jump will be using them as much as they can in the future.
Still OP is selling well over 2M a volume and KNY is yet to break 1M a volume.
It'll be interesting the see if the interest in the series increases next year too.
On a side note: It's interesting that OP last year and this year sold 4 volumes, but sales have gone up by 2M, no doubt down to Wano.
If you look at MHA, last year is sold 4 volumes, this year 5 and it's sales have gone down almost 2M.

I'm so sad that Oda making a mint selling millions of his acclaimed manga series pains you so much. It must be really hard for you .........
“I just spent the last two years thinking that you guys knew more than me about life and I just found out that you guys are just as dumb as me.” “Duh-doy.” “Yeah, duh-doy.”
Congrats to Kimetsu no Yaiba! Ufo adaptation was top tier even though the story was basically "non-stop shonen fights" and it's not a good thing honestly.
If only we could get the weekly manga volume sales list, MAL would be back to its glory days. We looked forward to those sales list so much. Please, please, PLEASE bring them back!
Good for Demon Slayer, Kaguya-sama, and Quintuplets, you kids deserve it, especially since all three of you won't last too long, since romance series don't last too long these days and Kimetsu no Yaiba seems as though it's pretty far along, or so I've heard
Xenocrisi said: Hopefully a fan war between OP and KnY won’t happen in this thread
Anyway, #BringBackWeeklySalesThread
Let it happen if the fans wanna do it. Otherwise it will be too quiet and not much people will know about it but I will like to see op and kny fans being intelligent more than Stoopid tho.
"I think I wanted to attack something. Like betraying people or hurting people. And, well, it's not exactly nice, but hurting the readers too... In all honestly, I feel that's what I really wanted to do. For me, as a reader, when I think, "this manga will remain in my heart," it means, for example, it phenomenally hurt me: It's those kinds of experiences I'm after." - Pajime Hisayama (My favourite hurting author).

Glad too see SNK is up there Still awesome :)
How do you define overrated 😂. People rating it highly due to liking?

Ask Tokyo ghoul's stupid adaptation. Many fans read the manga of it. Adaptation of KNY increased it's sales by a lot.

You know nothing about Wan piss. It was made by Japan in 19th century and ruled consistently over a century for back to back 101 years. It lost its crown in 1905 but again gained it in 1935 for 851 days. Then it ended. It retired with the crown. After WW2 it's volumes and author hot destroyed. New crown was then made. One piece is not even close to Wan Piss.

i really dislike people discredit manga success "well, it's anime works". as much as good anime is, if people disinterested with manga, they wouldn't buy it (look at you Fire force). this not special to KnY. as hard as a company put advertise, if the product is not satisfying, it wouldn't sell. people have been saying this for years.

mha shouldn't be there either, snk should be higher
rest is the same as usual.
@light_of_amphy shield hero is at the place where it belongs, in the trash
Calm down. Your ass is burning. Control it or it will catch up to your baby maker.
One thing I do agree with you: Why Snk didn't sell more as I heard it's getting better and better in the manga?
Because digital market is on the rise, not many people are buying physical copies anymore as they use to. Attack on Titan does well in digital sales too.

Just want to add more salt to kny haters. All kny volumes are still selling on oricon weekly top 30. Vol 17 sold 64k copies this week, which add to the 930k copies it already sold, breaking 1 million copies is inevitable. I love how the haters keep on bitching, while the kny hype train in japan just keep speeding on leaving them in the dust. Its so beautiful
You know, Orikon rankings are generally a bit off but not that much, while OP beating KnY in yearly run was reported by the publisher and does not match weekly rankings. There is a high doubt that they just do not want to recognize OP being beaten (despite both mangas being published by them).
