If anime becomes unfashionable will you stop watching it?

Stigmatizing art never worked. Iconoclasts and inquisition suffered a serious moral defeat in the modern historical discourse. The end of the world is a threat. "Stigmatized" art? Humanity survived that.

I've been watching anime for 24 years, I won't drop it just because of a trend...

I do agree that there are a lot of "trendy nerds" that like to pose as some kind of hardcore fan.

Anime was never fashionable and honestly the stigma still exists. People still think we are weird. I don't think I will ever not watch Anime though.

In my case I watched everything on TV till I was 18 yo, I had plently of shows available at the time... then, when I was 18 I started with the online stuff (10 years ago), lol.

Before I got into anime, I was part of that whole stigma thingy that thought all anime was was just tentacle porn and hentai. But then I gave it a try after a recommendation from my friend and started to like it. And because of my interest for anime, I've managed to keep going all these years. And so, since I never really got into anime because it was considered trendy or anything like that, I think it's safe to say that even if it went out of style that I'd still continue to watch it since I never really cared for that stuff.

People really overstate how popular or "fashionable" anime really is. I've been around anime since '06 and never really saw any serious uptick in general anime fashionableness this entire time. DBZ or BNHA seeing mainstream interest is nothing new nor a sign anime itself has wider appeal. Awareness != mainstream.

To begin with anime in Japan itself still isn't exactly a mainstream thing in the full sense of the term, why would it be in foreign markets? Besides, subcultures never reach real mainstream appeal anyways. Look at how hair metal or pop punk got big for a few years then disappeared. To answer the question though, of course not.

To be fair though, I hear that South Americans have a much higher "mainstreaming" of anime there compared to other Western regions.

I liked anime BEFORE it was cool.

No. I would still watch it. I'm not watching anime because it's seen as the in thing. I watch it because It interesting and find it entertaining.

I don't know if I can quite agree with that. In Tokyo, it's pretty much everywhere. Ghibli has its own museum, and there are lots of anime-related spectacles in most of the prefectures.

Pokemon has its own damn subway train ffs xD

Otaku-targeted anime isn't everywhere, no...but the family-friendly stuff definitely is.

That was uh the point of what I said. It's essentially all mickey mouse stuff, and that largely ignores that like the ol' rat it's seen and tolerated as generally kid or youth stuff. Anime culture itself is still largely a fringe. Subcultures by definition are subcultures. Casuals liking Ghibli is like Westerners liking Daffy Duck or Goofy.

You were rather vague; I didn't know what you meant by "in full sense of the term".

You still see anime stuff in every convenience store; be it 'mickey mouse' type or not. I call that 'mainstream'.

I see Marbs and Camels in every convenience store but I wouldn't call it mainstream. Availability is not an argument in support of being mainstream.

Shonen stuff has a place in everyday conversation, and that's only with other guys. Finding people who can appreciate Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou is a bit harder. Aside from shonen, I met someone who liked the Fate series once. Maybe it's just because I live in the swamp.

I totally only watch anime cause it gets me all the babes. I guess I'd have to stop watching if it went out of fashion.

If you only stick with an art form because it's in vogue then you never gave a shit about it in the first place; that's what fucking normies do

Once I see Kizuna Ai giving me weather reports, and Kazuma is entered into the history text books as the greatest ally of gender equality. I need my cigarettes to be kawaii flavored, and my rum to be spiced with tsun-tsun.

When the entire culture is like a nightmare thread on /a/, then it is adequately mainstream.
