Null seems to be living in a simulation. Perhaps she is actually in a coma like Kirito in SAO; Alicization. Maybe Peta isn't really dead, or maybe she died in the accident that put Null in a coma, or maybe Null retreated into this simulation. |

| As Peta went out on her own and came back hurt I was thinking, as she is defined by her care for Null, that this must be for her sake. Coming right off of the glitch last episode, I wondered if she was going to fight evil simulation monsters or something. Then after cutting from Peta saying not to go outside to Null playing a zombie game I thought hologram zombies were attacking!!! It seems that was somewhat wrong, but not completely. In Peta’s words, the school is in danger and to protect the school could be for Null’s sake. And although not literal zombies, the school is in danger because of little video game looking creatures. Those creatures being the things Peta is crushing with a hammer in the Donkey Kong parody of the opening. If that is to be trusted then there will be a boss monster involved which is creating them too. The creatures also take part in the bubble popping game in the opening. To add onto the video game thoughts, the same hallway that was in the zombie game was where Peta was fighting the video game creatures which gives an uncanny feeling. We’ve also seen Peta seemingly controlling Null with an arcade cabinet before so it’s not the first time there was a connection like this. Lastly, those creatures gave Peta a virus and as they devour the school it phases in and out like the glitch from the beach. The idea of Null escaping into this world within a coma or going into a simulation to deal with her grief would fit her avoidant behavior. Also, a simulation world would all of a sudden justify all the craziness in the series within the realm of reason. Another theory I had was if this was a simulation to help her by dealing with her fears by using the things she knows like video games... She's been given a call to action, to go to the place she fears; school, and to face things that scare her there; in this case not classmates but monsters. To go there and defend it seems like it could be a symbolic form of overcoming her struggle. And despite some people only now saying the series seems dark, from the beginning it was about a girl living by herself, ostracized by her peers at school, scared of other people, having no parents and being forced to recreate a sister she misses. Even if it didn’t do this simulation stuff I would certainly say this series was always giving itself these serious and sad undertones. |
