Just curious about how you guys rate.
Do you give many 10s or a few?

I have 19 anime rated 10 from 113 anime completed.

What about you? :)

That depends. Do we count sequels, OVA-s separately? Or if we rated 3 seasons of an anime 10/10 that still counts as one?

Just 27 entries got 10/10 from me, which is around 0.5% of my list. Imo 10s should feel special and rare, inflationary use of them just makes them feel average and not stand out from the rest of your list.

When someone has 20%+ of their list as 10/10 I just treat their 10s as equivalents to my 7s or 8s because that's what top 20% of the list translates to.

Aesthetic value can be recognized or experienced, but it cannot be conveyed to those who are incapable of grasping its sensations and perceptions. To quarrel on its behalf is always a blunder.

16 entries to date, making it 2.66%. As such, very few but it's a little higher than I expected, to be honest. I've got loads of 8s and 9s though.

I won't be listing them all now but feel free to check them out if you wish to.

In that case, I have 53 10/10 ratings on my list.

I admit, I would probably rate some of them lower If I had re-watched them now, but I don't like changing the score afterwards.

I have seven 10s total. I try not to hand it out lightly, and sometimes even certain seasons of a show will get it when others don't. And for percentage, that's about 1.8%. So I guess I'm more generous with 10s than I thought.

44. Less than I thought.... I need to give out more tens.
Partly because I think it's funny how many MALer somehow get triggered if you give out too many tens. Hoooh boi, just watch me <3

About 2% get a 10/10, which is in line with the common use of the normal distribution in many scenarios where elite has to be defined mathematically. E.g. an IQ of 130+ is defined as testing within the top 2% of the population.

82/277 of my anime have teen points,, But it would be fewer if we could use a 100/100 point system ,, On AL i have 17/292 on 100/100 ,,Need to update my MAL list again,,

Maybe im a bit generous sometimes with the points =P But I love my little girls, and if they play to my rules they are going to get a lot of points =) They are so cute!!!

If there's any question about whether it's a 10, it's not a 10.

So, three. And of those three, one acts as a proxy for an entire multi-series work to which it acts as the climax - most of the individual series are rated highly but not 10s. Of the other two, only one is also in my top three anime - because how much I like something doesn't necessarily reflect its quality in my eyes (although there's obviously a correlation).

10s are special, or they should be anyway.

Are the 10 favorites on your profile just picked randomly out of those 100+ 10s? Or do you actually like them more than your other 10s, but just don't show it in your score for some reason?

My point being that using 10s sparingly has nothing to do with rating based on quality or enjoyment. Either you make your favorites stand beyond the rest that you 'just' liked, or you mix different levels of like together under one label, making it hard to know what the score actually means in each individual case.

I still express the way I feel towards a show with my score, just in a more nuanced way than someone who only has 1 score for 'like'. I have one for 'like' one for 'like a lot' one for 'this was awesome' and one for 'alltime favorites' and I think it's kind of a shame when I see a list that has no such distinctions. I wouldn't want people to think I feel the same way about my alltime favorites as I do about shows I just kinda liked. For one it's inaccurate since although I 'like' both of them I definitely don't feel exactly the same way about them, the intensity of how much I ike them is very different. And also I love my favorites too much to not want to make them stand out from the rest.

That's my 2 cents on the topic, but I just wanted to quickly debunk the implication that being more nuanced with your scores is only relevant if you rate by quality and not enjoyment. It's always useful because both quality and enjoyment come in different degrees.

Aesthetic value can be recognized or experienced, but it cannot be conveyed to those who are incapable of grasping its sensations and perceptions. To quarrel on its behalf is always a blunder.

I gave 9 anime tens out of 118 anime I've completed, but half of those are seasons of the same shows. If we're looking at series as a whole, I've given 6 series/movies 10/10.

2 so far. Naruto (both, but I count it as 1) and Steins;Gate 0.

EDIT: Just saw your 2nd question. I do NOT give 10s out easily at all. Usually if I truly love something, I give it a 9. It needs something extra special for that 10.

29 10s

If out of all I rated per MALGraph, then max 1.846% (since last update)
If out of all entries I have completed, then 1.2414%

This includes giving multiple 10s to the same franchise.
I feel that might be a bit much, since once I love the franchise, it's a little easier for another of its entry to get a 10.

To clarify - all 10s are potential favorites. Not all shows rated 10 deserves it - I know that. About the nuance of liking, loving ant etc. - i don't use any nuance like that (except for top 10). About the top 10 favorites - shows between 6-10 spot can be rotated, but stuff in 1-5 spots will stay there for eternity, cause they are just so special for me I don't wanna remove them from my faves. I don't like rotating stuff so maybe it'll stay like that. Hope I clarified it for you.

Nine anime out of 349 that I've completed have earned a 10 from me. It takes a lot to earn a 10/10.

Back in the day I could give 10 to everything.

Now, I rate anime with the method including the following steps:

1) Rating first episodes. Was it interesting and very engaging from the start? If not, it's okay, a lot of series start pretty slow. I only give a preliminary score.
2) Rating first half of the season. At this point, I can already see how the anime keeps up and if it fits my interest. I give it an estimated score (let's say it's 7) but depending on the show's ending, I can give it a few more or less points.
3) Rating the last episodes. So, was it good? Was I emotionally attached? Do I feel satisfied? I give a final score depending on how I felt through the entire anime.

I can be easily impressed by simple things, though. It's not hard for a cheesy 90's anime to receive a 10 from me, just make it fun.

20/666 rated anime. Quite a few of those are shorts and music videos etc though, so the proportion of full movies and series I've rated a 10 is a bit higher. Seems like a suitable number to me, 10s should be special or the score loses a lot of its meaning.

To date I've given 13 10s out of 1 Watching, 127 Completed, 2 On Hold, 1 Dropped

8 if you consider Inuyasha has 5 distinct entries as 10 and Higurashi has two, but all are technically part of the same show and lumped together in my head.

They are the following:

Inuyasha
Inuyasha - The Final Act
Inuyasha the Movie 1 - Affections Touching Across Time
Inuyasha the Movie 3 - Swords of an Honorable Ruler
Inuyasha the Movie 4 - Fire on the Mystic Island
Koi Kaze
Haibane Renmei
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
Berserk
Serial Experiments Lain
Spirited Away
Usagi Drop

Only 6 out of those listed are in my top 10 in positions 1-6 (the bottom 4 are comprised of 9s). The reason is because I don't count seasons of the same show as separate entries for the purposes of a top list even if MAL archives them separately; they're the same show to me.

I exclude movies from my top list because there's a lot more you can do in a show with many episodes and hours than a movie which will probably at most be 3 hours.

I think the only thing from my above list which isn't in my top 10 but doesn't fit any of the exclusion criteria I mentioned is Usagi Drop, and that's just because at 11 episodes it's a bit short for the story they were telling even if I enjoyed every minute of the 11. If it were 24 or 26 or more with maintenance of the same consistency of quality then undoubtedly it would earn a spot.

1.

(I tend to keep my highest rating 9. (Specifically Light 9) For example, Serial Experiments Lain, Mushishi. No matter how excellent they are, if there's things to point out or criticize, I do. But this one anime, Shigurui... It not only obliterated my expectations, influenced my life and character more than any other anime I've seen and more. Also critically, it's so goddamn amazing story-wise, structurally, visually, then how unapologetic and insane it is, that I can't but overlook the flaws that there may be. If I give it anything less than a 10, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.)

(Back to the topic...) If you feel any discomfort or insecure giving too many 10s, maybe try to bring some down that don't really deserve a 10. Then re-rate other anime comparing them to the deserving 10..? Not a great idea - but hey.

I have 26 10s out of 153 completed, but 6 are seperate entries from the same franchise I gave a 10 too, and are either a continuity or canon stand alone story. Got 8 movies at 10 as well, which I value in a different way than series.

So currently I have 12 series rated 10/10, and I expect Vinland Saga and GitS to gain that rating as well when I've finished them

If a 10 is a "Masterpiece", I believe people should understand how rare this rating should be on their lists.

There should be little to no anime that can be compared to 10s in terms of the excellence it represents in their respective genre.

I have 8 "10s" out of the 149 I completed.
