Me and two guys made a three hour podcast about it yesterday, and arrived at such conclusions (Granted, "the worst" wasn't unanimous, having 2 votes for 2017 and 1 for 2011).

Each season of each year was analyzed individualy, taking criteria such as:
Number of relevant anime, ratio of relevant anime, number of good anime, ratio of good anime, number of bad/mediocre anime, number of bad/mediocre anime, "Would you watch a lot of this season's anime if this season was the current one?", so on, and so fort.

What's your view on that?

No, and you know too that your sample sizes are really small, not yet mentioning how variant your samples are.

I can kinda see 2017 as the worst year, although having Made in Abyss and Dragon Maid alone kinda irons over a lot for me. I personally disliked 2015 a lot more, with only a handful or shows that I'd categorize as great and a ton of shows that I now despise.

As for best year, 2014 wouldn't even be in the running. 2011 or maybe 2018 would probably take that. 2011 had Steins;Gate, Anohana, and Chihayafuru, and those are just the series I adore, much less the collection of others that I really enjoy or have heard fantastic things about. 2018 on the other hand had Yuru Camp, Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho, and Liz and the Blue Bird, while having dozens of other easy 8/10s for me.

I'd say I'm more of a quality over quantity person, I'd rather have a few series that really stick with me over a ton of series that I think are good, but nothing special. I know that wasn't the metric you guys were using, but honestly, with how many anime there are nowadays, using a ratio method feels like a terrible way to determine the quality of a year.

What?
Dude, we literally went through every season page on MAL from 2010 through 2019.

I can't speak for the worst, but I don't think 2017 is the best year. I'd definitely say 2018 was probably the best year for anime is this decade.

Yeah, but the opinions of three people are nowhere near enough to speak for the community at large. Any opinion on what the "best" and "worst" years of anime are is just a moot point, as it always inevitably boils down to subjectivity.

This is gonna be highly subjective. People who have some favorites from a particular year are gonna lean towarda that for best year and same goes for the the worst.

Of the recent few years, I can say that 2018 was pretty great. Might have to dig a bit deeper into the anime that aired in the last few years to decide which one os my "favorite" year.

My 2nd favorite show of this overall lackluster and disappointing decade premiered in 2017, so hell no with the 2nd statement.

Is that your first/only account? Because then you joined in 2014 and you think 2014 was the best year of anime. Uh huh...
If it is, don't you think there's any correlation to nostalgia or what have you?

Although I personally enjoyed 2014 the most on average (based on my personal scores) I think the fact that 2011 was even considered for worst is a bit of a yikes. Like 2011 has a huge assortment of shows that were either popular in terms of sheer viewership or rated very high on average.
2017 is iffy, while there is a huge amount of varied shows and a few pretty big hits it would still be hard to say it was a particularly amazing year but it was far from a bad one.

Not really, altough i joined MAL in 2014 (Though i watched anime before that), i only began using it in 2016.
We used objective criteria to try to define that and, as i said, it was unanimous.

2013, 2019 are probably in contender of worst years of the decade. Only AoT ad Kill la Kill were really big in 2013 and we hardly talk about the later now. 2019 will forever be remembered as the Year of Isekai regardless of the amount of good shows coming out.

2011 was probably the best year of the decade in terms of how many outstanding anime came out but I can completely understandable why people would disagree if you were to look only through the vacuum of a MAL seasonal list. 2014 and 2016 tie for second best.

I'm curious. How did you judge how good a season was if you didn't watch literally everything? Did you get community feedback on what was considered good or bad like MAL scores and went off of those?

Your "test" sounds extremely subjective and has far too view voters to be considered scientific at all. 2017 had a lot of fantastic series, more than average even. I'd say that 2015 was a rather lackluster year.

Maybe gather a few thousand more friends to give their thoughts on the matter before jumping to conclusions.

Surprisingly enough, I kinda agree with you with 2017 as the worst year for anime. Honestly, I don't find most of the shows from that year interesting to me at all. In fact, I can also say that 2017 was the worst year for movies and tv in general.

As for the best year, I'd say it's a 3 way tie between 2010, 2011 and 2018. I almost had 2019 in the mix but then Summer and Fall seasons came and things went downhill for me.

2014 was kinda trash tbh, it had for me only 1 8/10 show. Every other show is at least below that.

I dont know if 2017 was the best of the decade but definitely not the worst, it had 3-gatsu no lion 2nd Season,Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen, Owarimonogatari and Made in Abyss all those 4 shows beat or are even with every show from 2014, at least in my book.

2011,2010,2018 were pretty neat to,but overall the whole decade was not that great imo, had some gems but a 1 in 15 or more ratio is not that juicy.

2011 was the best year for sure. A variety of shows including some absolute icons (Fate/Zero, HxH, Steins;Gate, Madoka, Usagi Drop etc...)

For the weakest year in anime? 2013, I guess?

I agree, except I'd also say that 2019 is giving 2011 a really strong competition. The hype of Mob Psycho 100 II, AoT Season 3 Part 2, Kimetsu No Yaiba simply reached unreal levels (the second one even reached the top spot on MAL for a few days). The Promised Neverland was also great & so has been Vinland Saga.

And now there's MHA Season 4, which I have a hunch is gonna be outstanding as well.

The only disappointment was OPM Season 2 (which BTW I think is a bit overhated), apart from that I can't really find any blimps in 2019 TBH.

2014 had the best anime ever with Ore Twintail ni Narimasu though also Sakura Trick is a really sweet CGDCT with real yuri. I wouldn't say this decade was weak though because you always have a huge ratio of garbage to good anime and it wasn't better before this decade

Honestly, Shigatsu was the only great show from 2014 (If you count him as a 2014 show, since it was finished in 2015). It would probably be one of my least favorite years.
As for 2017, there are so many great stuff from there: Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2, Kono Suba 2, No Game No Life: Zero, Kizumonogatari trilogy (considering that the Bluray was only avaiable on 2017 for the three of them), Owarimonogatari Season 2, Made in Abyss, and of course the masterpiece: Sangatsu no Lion Season 2. I'd say 2017 is one of the best years of this decade man

Honestly, 2018 was worse. There was nothing all that great to come out that year meanwhile I have 6 9/10 entries from 2017. I watched about as many anime from both years, for the record. Hell, 2019 is better than 2018 in my view because it has 1 9 and just as many anime I like as 2018. Even the best of 2018 isn't especially fantastic or anything (Aggreteuko, Bloom Into You, Natsume movie) to me.
"Anti-elitists" are the true elitists of this community. They're the kind of people that remind me that the elitist stereotype they perpetuate basically doesn't exist, and those who use it to scapegoat embody practically every trait they put into the stereotype, as they sit in their ivory tower looking down at and attacking people they disagree with because they're being negative on a show they like, and their favorites list is comprised of at least one non-mainstream classic, all the while cowering at the idea of those people giving them a taste of their own medicine. Also, objectivity in art is relative, therefore arguable, not nonexistent.

There's only one way to accurately judge the output of each year and that is watching all or at least most of its shows. The rest is an approximation, relevance is heavily biased towards the most widely popular genres and your will to watch a series or not is not a measure of quality.

If you are fine with calling this a mere approximation, then okay. But don't pretend this analysis of yours to be anything but that.

Can't confirm your results. Accoding to MALgraph analysis on the always incomplete set of shows I watched, 2011 was the best and 2018 the worst year. See there for details.

Anime from 2010: (17, mean score: 5.50)
Anime from 2011: (24, mean score: 6.04)
Anime from 2012: (20, mean score: 4.95)
Anime from 2013: (30, mean score: 4.63)
Anime from 2014: (32, mean score: 4.84)
Anime from 2015: (36, mean score: 4.23)
Anime from 2016: (36, mean score: 4.86)
Anime from 2017: (31, mean score: 4.81)
Anime from 2018: (18, mean score: 3.83)
Anime from 2019: (27, mean score: 4.56)

Noragami, the first WIXOSS serie (the visual were good, so I tried expecting something average as fuck, and was pleasantly surprised), Barakamon, Ao Haru Ride, Monogatari, Aldoanh Zero (second season went into crash course, but first season was really good), Shigatsu, Garo : Honoo no kokuin, Shingeki no Bahumut : Genesis and Shirobako.

And for those I didn't watch (either because I couldn't get into them, either because I tried and didn't like) but still got good reception Space Dandy, No Game no Life, Ping Pong the animation, Knight of Sidonia and Zankyou no Terror.

I could also talk about the sequels, like Silver Spoon 2, Jojo Stardust Crusader, Haikyuu!!, Mushishi, Fate UBW and Psycho Pass 2.

And some people would probably also add SAO GGO, Akame ga kill, Tokyo Ghoul, Nisekoi or Amagi brilliant park.

That year might not be your favourite, it's a matter of taste, but 2014 is clearly one of the good in term of average quality. I even feel it's the last year I really enjoyed watching anime, since then I feel like the average quality of anime tanked. That there are still gems here and there that shine far more than the 2014 shows, but that the average anime is less good than what it was at the time.

I will say there is a consirable ammount of show you metioned that I did not watch. But for the ones I did watch, I don't think they made the year on a special level. (Ps:Like you said earlier, this is only my opinion)

Noragami: Pretty fun and well made show, but it's just a 7/10 for me

Hanamonogatari/Tsukimonogatari: Both were pretty consistent, but inferior to it's predecessor (Monogatari: Second Season), so 7/10 as well

Aldonoah:Zero: For what I can recall, first season was only slighly interesting because of Sawano OST. The plot was really average. 6/10

Shigatsu: It's the one I metioned earlier I could consider to be the only "great" show of that year. Extremelly captivating and beautiful 9/10

No Game No Life: Very interesting and smart show, but the excessive ecchi made me downgrade a point for me 7/10

Jojo Part 3 (pt1): Honestly? Extremelly repetitive. After some time, it became really boring. 5/10

Haikyuu!!: First season was good, but nothing extraordinary. 7/10

Psycho-Pass S2: Most people really don't like that show. I actually enjoyed, but compared to the first one, it's vastely inferior. 7/10

SAO GGO: what save the show from being a 5/10 were the really well executed last couple of episodes. But yeah, 6/10

Akame ga Kill: I belive after episode 18/19, the show became weird and rushed. The final was extremelly forced and disappointing. 6/10

Tokyo Ghoul: I really enjoyed that one, although sometimes I wonder if it was only because of the good direction and soundtrack. I didn't metioned him before because most people don't like this adaptation (I belive it rushed the manga). But personally, I gave it a 8/10

Made in abyss is enough to defend 2017 so no way it was worst year, also 2017 had 3-gatsu no lion second season(best sequel ever) and gintama 2017 which are all 9+ shows here on MAL. You haven't watched them doesn't mean they don't exist.

Even if I'm pretty inexperienced, the two obvious stand-outs to me are 2011 and 2016, looking over their respective lineups there were great, long-lasting shows each season.

I think that 2017 was the best year of the 2010s, 2014 is also a good year, but for a different reason.

2017 - three 9/10 anime series and a plethora of other brilliant series, mean score 5.8

2014 - three 9/10 anime series and the most anime I had ever watched in a single year, mean score is among the lowest unfortunately.

There have been many threads and polls about this before. 2011 is generally considered the best year of this decade in the overall public opinion in my experience simply because of the overwhelming amount of highly rated shows that came out during it, and I would agree with that as well

Not sure about worst though

imagine thinking that 2011 is one of the worst when stuff like Madoka, Steins;Gate, AnoHana, Fate/Zero, Nichijou, Mawaru Penguindrum and HxH aired this year.

I agree 2014 was the best year for anime in the decade.

2017 wasn't great but least it's was much better than 2018
2017 Had Magus Bride, Little Witch Academia TV, March Comes in Like a Lion S2, Made In Abyss, Princess Principal, Dragon Maid and Welcome to the Ballroom. All shows that I gave a 8 and above Sure it had crap like Eromanga, Black Clover anime (Manga is actually great) and Iskeai Smarphone but theses turds never out shined the greats.

If anything 2018 was the worst year for anime.
It was the year that gave us broken garbage like Tokyo Ghoul re, Persona 5 the Animation Darling in the Franxx, any Isekai anime that is not Slime, Beatless, Magical Girl Site, My Sister My Writer, and Conception.
It was also the year that screw up older franchises by having crappy squeals/remakes. Index S3, Inazuma Eleven Ares/Orion, Steins;Gate 0, Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory (Not terrible but it lacked the charm of the previous seasons)
Sure 2018 had some good to great shows that I liked such as Hinamataru, Chio's School Road, Shinkalion, High Score Girl, Bloom Into You, A Place further than the Universe, Golden Kamuy and Slime but the bad anime from 2018 unfortunately outweigh the good ones.

Problem is that fansubs are not what they used to be and are far fewer with those streaming sites. This affect the quality of the series for people not knowing Japanese. Official subs lack the love, detail and care of fansubs

I've watched 69 anime from 2014 so far with an average score of 6.87 and 57 anime from 2017 with an average of 6.77. So I'd have to agree 2017 is worse than 2014.

2019 kills everything though, only seen 19 anime from this year and it already has a much higher score than every other year.

According to my chart the worst year from the decade is 2018. With 69 anime completed and an average score of 6.61.

There's certain shows that people often fail to mention that can probably alter some answers if actually watched.

Stuff like Hyouge Mono, Space Brothers, Precure, PriPara, Aikatsu!, Mahoujin Guruguru, final seasons of Hidamari Sketch, etc, which far fewer people have generally went out of their way to actually watch.

Is that your first/only account? Because then you joined in 2014 and you think 2014 was the best year of anime. Uh huh...
If it is, don't you think there's any correlation to nostalgia or what have you?

wut
you're aware that people watch anime outside of MAL, right, and that people have a long history with anime before deciding to create an account here?

2017 had new gintama, little witch academia, Konosuba season 2, youjo senki, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon, my hero season 2, attack on titan season 2, tsuki ga kirei,

and most of all it had Made in Abyss, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu season 2, Owarimonogatari season 2, Houseki no Kuni AND 3-gatsu no Lion second season.

Wouldn't call that a bad year by any means. Probably one of the better ones this decade now that I'm looking at everything from it put in a list
