Samurai 8 vol 1 did 12.728 Samurai 8 vol 2 did 11.436 In case people need some comparison with a series with a similar premise, build-up to release and also the return of a major creator...Eden's Zero, on the first week, managed about 50k. I can't believe I can say Mashima beat Kishimoto, but here we are. https://twitter.com/RainSpectre/status/1182030960516165632 damn so sad for Kishimoto right now, and Edens Zero is space sci-fi manga too like Samurai 8 is, but ye the first 15 chapters of Samurai 8 is kinda average or i see why people thinks its bad or boring with all the technical jargon and info dumps EDIT: there might be hope according to this Kimetsu no Yaiba sold 16k in its first week and Act-Age did 11k in its first week, but they made it past the axe. Again, what's discouraging for Samurai 8 is that it got tons of promotion yet its doing only this. If Kishimoto doesn't turn it around quickly then Samurai 8 will be out the door within the next 6 months if even that. https://www.reddit.com/r/Samurai8/comments/dfivi3/samurai_8_volumes_12_sales/f33ogv1/ The weekly sales spanned from September 30 - October 6. With Samurai 8 having released on October 4th, this means that this only represents the weekend sales (3 days worth, as u/B_024 pointed out). So far Volume 1 sold 13k, with Volume 2 Selling 11.5k. It's certainly not Axe-Worthy, especially when you consider that other series (Act-Age & Kimetsu no Yaiba) started off with similar sales numbers over a longer span of time, not to mention that the number will grow by the end of the week. https://www.reddit.com/r/Samurai8/comments/dfky9y/troll_posts_weekly_sales_updates_please_read/ |

I think there are many reason that S8 make sale like that: 1. Expectation: Other series can get the excuse that their author is inexperience ( like KnY) . But this is Kishi we talking about. like his writing or not, you cannot denied how big Naruto was, so he don't have excuse of being inexperience. People expect Kishi would be better than most new series, not average. 2. Kishi got the George Lucas problem. Like Lucas, he created a huge franchise. But people forget that both Lucas and Kishi can have bad ideas and there always need someone to talk them out of those bad ideas while keeping the good one. S8 current editor don't seem to be able to said "No" to Kishi ideas and let him do whatever he want. A better editor would said "No" to that much exposition and info dump or move them back down the road. 3. Jump push: jump motto is no one get special treatment. But clearly Kishi got special treatment with all the advertisements his series got. This certainly will rub people the wrong way seeing Jump focus in this series while giving a cold shoulder to other title. This combine with the first 2 volume isn't exactly great to begin with make people hate it more. If Jump just let S8 stand on it own then it would probably got less hate. 4. Compare to KnY: Both are series about samurai and sword fight. While KnY early part alos quite rocky, it was a simple story, easy to follow and a likeable MC while S8 story is too complicated too early. It okay to world building, but it shouldn't be done like what S8 did. Ideally you want to scatter the world building and info dumb throughout the story. Also the fights have more stake since MC can't regen and there no magic healing power in the series so serious injuries stuck. A couple weeks ago both S8 and KnY have a chapter where a character head got cut off. S8 shake it off like it was nothing while KnY give it all the seriousness it should have. 5. Compare to Eden Zero. I think the most important aspect of a story is it characters. You don't need good character at the beginning ( that what character developments are for) but likable. This give Eden Zero an edge over S8 dry exposition and world building. The Lucas comparison also showed here. The SW Prequel was hated cause all the exposition, info dump and the boring politic talk that go no where. World building is good but without good characters the world just seem empty and lifeless. |

@ExaltedChampion 3. i agree the jump pushy promotion of this manga may have been too much 4. yep kimetsu no yaiba is much easy to follow and understand while samurai 8 is like hard science fiction already in the beginning lol and that is not shonen like 5. yep edens zero have good characters or fanservice characters that is mashimas selling point too in fairy tail manga the tons of waifus |

Called "generic mess", "copy/paste of FT and Naruto" etc. International Comic Con voted it as the worst manga of the year... And where is Black Clover now? Why it wasn't axed? I mean...it was a horrible shame of Jump. Kimetsu no Yaiba's 1st volume barely reached 16k volumes sold. Its first 4 volumes weren't even able to sell 30k volumes. Before the anime Kimetsu was "meh". Act-Age? Barely 11k volumes sold. It was "meh". And now you tell me that Samurai 8 can't be as good or even better than those series? Jesus Christ... |

Ciogio said: And now you tell me that Samurai 8 can't be as good or even better than those series? I'm one of those bookstore employers and let me say that...the whole "outraged bookstores because of Samurai 8" is just a big pile of fake news. And those 5ch users are not bookstore employers. All fake. Let me say that Kishimoto-sensei created the 3rd best manga series ever existed and his work took a huge part of forging Shueisha and WSJ as how we know it nowadays. If Shueisha is what it is like now is also thanks to Kishimoto Masashi and his work. Shueisha is still getting a lot of money thanks to Kishimoto-sensei's creations. Saying Kishimoto's new work damaged Shueisha's reputation is not only wrong. It's also very stupid to say. That said, considering Samurai 8 as a dead series right now is the most foolish thing you can do. Many series started low and many series survived. Few examples are right above. Keep some faith on Kishimoto-sensei and stop insulting him by saying he damaged Shueisha. If you don't know what Kishimoto did to Shueisha, Bandai etc. then you should not even talk about him. Please, next time take some informations before insulting the sensei. Have a good day and GO SAMURAI 8! |

Man, I feel awful for the guy. Naruto is my favorite anime of all time, and after all these years he clearly wanted to work on something else, must have needed a creative shift. Yet, Boruto, which lifts off of his series, does better. I'm sure he wishes Ikemoto well, but I can't help but just think 'yikes'. |

What a bad news ): Just S8 isn't that bad and the latest chapter was good and sad It will a bad day when it's cancelled but we are talking about Masashi kishimoto I don't think that he will try to publish something that he didn't think it will a good series , he is the one who wrote Naruto , One of the best shows ever It won't get cancelled for sure , It's just kishi , he can make it a wholesome manga for sure |

Damn, I'm surprised that even volume 2 didn't do any better. The manga really gets good around Chapter 12, which I presume would be in Volume 2. The manga actually stays at a consistent level of quality past chapter 12, I can't believe people still don't like it. Sad :( |

Kishimoto explains that if you don't do well in reader surveys, you'll quickly lose your chance at creating a hit. He says that turning a confusing science fiction story into an easily comprehensible shonen manga was incredibly difficult. He then adds that there won't be many scientific explanations for the gadgets in the series at first, and that he instead intends to present them as almost magical, taking inspiration from Arthur C. Clarke's famous quote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Then, after the reader has gotten used to the setting and worldview, he'll begin explain things more scientifically, and through that process hopes to incorporate the conflict between religion and science. He then jokes that, for now, he's just desperately trying to make little improvements to the first chapter. Kishimoto goes on to say that in the past there was a boom in science fiction manga, but there's now a drought. In the past there was a desire for it from the readers, so the manga were created in response to that, and now he needs to create that desire for the readers again. So, he had to figure out why the science fiction genre stagnated. https://www.reddit.com/r/Samurai8/comments/bmm6gn/summary_of_da_vinci_magazines_longform_interview/ welp Kishi is failing so sad the kids today do not care about it since there is no moe/sexy and science fiction is hard to understand |

What a trash way to get people reading your manga... ??? Some of the most popular shonen manga out there in SJ are Kimetsu no Yaiba, The Promised Neverland both which have none of those things. The biggest recent shonen hit is Spy X Family which again has none of those things. I want to give it a chance again but Samurai 8 really just didn't capture me compared to the first few chapters/episodes of Naruto. That said I would wait awhile some titles need more time to get going in the sales market. If it doesn't grow it could get cancelled but like some have pointed out Kimetsu no Yaiba had a iffy start. I might get back into it since some have said it has started to look up but it has a fairly weak beginning so I am not that shocked the sales didn't do well. Though yes he could build on it so I hope Kishimoto and Jump give it more time. The world itself was pretty cool. @deg Are you guys just joking or memeing or ignore that most big recent shonen titles don't have a lot of fanservice. Sure Sci Fi has been down in anime/manga since the late 2000's which is a factor but it has nothing to do with fansevice. |

@TolkienFan365 i given Spy X Family as an example it has moe/cute fanservice a lot of it and its not just Anya but you can also add the family interactions as cute/moe Kimetsu no Yaiba like i said have much simple to follow story than Kishimotos confusing science fiction plot right now that is more seinen like rather than shonen |

Yaiba has Nezuko though even though they are kids I wouldn't say Neverland has really any actual moe and of course no fanservice moments at all. That's Jump biggest new hit outside of MHA. So to say that is the only reason is kinda ridiculous I just don't think Samurai 8 is that captivating outside of the ideas for the world from the small bit I read. I didn't read that many positive opinions to it either so even in the West it isn't catching on that much despite it being from the mangaka who created Naruto. Jujutsu Kaisen is doing well in sales no idea how that manga is in terms of content but it doesn't look like an art style to complement moe aspects. It could have fanservice though no idea. Who knows maybe he can save the series but dropping sales on your second volume despite it already starting with low sales doesn't look good. |

@TolkienFan365 dude i never said fanservice is the only reason lol its just one of the reasons clearly since Edens Zero have tons of fanservice even though its like Samurai 8 that are both science fiction and a space manga and we know the Edens Zero is popular or doing good in japan right now |

So I might be directing that more at you. I just don't think say well that is the reason because it doesn't have x which is all they care about really excuses that most people just found the initial characters uninteresting, the art kinda messy etc. I mean I want it to be good because I think the world itself is interesting which can make even a classic generic battle shonen entertaining even if the writing is meh. Spy X Family has better humor and characters that you get attached to quickly it's not just Anya being moe and cute family moments. It's better written and honestly has a more interesting setting in my personal opinion (Spy stories in anime/manga are even rarer than Sci Fi). Twilight and Yoru (ignoring Anya) I think are more interesting than Hachimaru and honestly an adult duo that kinda has a somewhat married feel (even if they aren't and they probably will drag the romance out) is just more refreshing from a shonen manga. Even without Anya I still would enjoy the story much more if it was just them. Neverland again plot wise felt more engaging even Yaiba did in my personal opinion which had the weakest start of those three and built on it slowly. I do believe Kishi could turn the series around I even heard some good things about later chapters but that is concerning that sales are going down when his first volume didn't sell that well. Though I would just more blame it on not being that great from the first few chapters that i read at least. I can't compare it to Eden so I can't say on that front. |

I had a feeling this would happen, shame cause i think it was getting better. This seems pretty fucked, usually alumni of jump series get a bit more leeway on getting axed so i think its actually possible this will make it to 35 to 40 chapters before it ends which is abit farther than most. Feel pretty bad for kishimoto though, gotta suck going from on top the world to a certified flop that doesnt get off the ground. Like its really not hard to see this series simply wasnt doing well, like at all. There is so little conversation around it virtually anywhere and it feels like japan outright forgot about it after the first 2 chapters. It kind of has that sad connotation to it that Kishimoto's name doesnt actually carry any weight to it. Its harsh but theres a reason alot of Jump megahits dont ever really see the authors coming back with a 2nd one, it's a very lightning in the bottle scenario as to what actually catches on and it seems incredibly rare they ever really do get a 2nd hit. Wicked_K said: If anything jump is probably the farthest it has gotten from this looking at their current major releases. That was more accurate in the late 2000's and early 2010's than now. I mean theres fanservice yeah but thats just japan being horny its really only that one to love ru light series thats actually all that noteworthy in terms of sexual content, and that shit is pathetic compared to to love ru's shamelessness.About EZ: we're living in a stupid, sad world if a "modern" shounen manga MUST have a fuckin' harem and tons of fan service every now and then to be considered a "good manga".
