Wasted time.

I thought this anime would be much better but it wasn't. I liked the political and ethics stuff but this show focused too much on the shitty action for it to be insightful.

5 or 6/10. Will give it a 5 for now.

This was a good fucking show!! It had the same feels of Western cop shows which makes it a ten in my book. That ending was magnifique and Tilarna relation with Kei grows stronger than ever before!!!!

I hope there a season two!!

All in all a pretty good show and a nice homage to long ago cop buddy shows. I’ve got to wonder if the author was influenced by Starsky & Hutch.

Aside from the other things, I should also point out that Tourte's victory was underwhelmingly brushed aside with positive thinking and believing that it will all be fine. It was portrayed as a big deal earlier, and now it apparently barely matters.

...What? Then why were you worried in the first place?

Slightly better crime fighting genre than usual. Fights animation really tanked halfway tho. The story & pacing could've used some refining, especially the political side & more both sides povs Semanian & earth.
Kei & Tilarna a fun pair, at times snappy dialogue & the relation grew quite well.

Wished they didn't go with the over the top move on Kei decapitating Zelada, what?! they expect us to think he had some samurai training and he's able to properly wield an alien sword in order to go for a clean cut?

maybe he had? I mean after all he was one of the soldiers during war, he even was on another side. So having at least basic knowledge about sword fighting would be understable.

A good ending to the show. Do hope we get more of these characters with a bigger budget. That weapon swap had me wondering if that is like exchanging rings in Tilarnas culture and that her and kei are now married and he doesn't realise it.

Honestly, I'm actually surprised that I enjoyed the show as much as I did.

Naturally, like with most people here (and probably watched it), the biggest problem with the largest cut to animation. While less of an issue, the plot progression was... I don't know whether to say it was "weird" or just "different" considering people are reporting that it covered all LN volumes. Still, having a beginning conflict and one at the end with and the middle being more lax was certainly different than most storytelling. Although, I would have much preferred if the middle-part covered more personal stories. (Hell, I would have shipped the two if we had more time)

Yet, I enjoyed it. Part due to the ol' Buddy Cop theme, and the other because I like both Kei and Tilarna. As for this last episode, well, just typing the sentence "a grizzled cop cuts off a wizard's head with a warrior's otherworldly sword as she shoots him" sounds good.

7/10. Needs more Tilarna + Tilarna's butt
If I season 2 were possible, I'd say I'd like it... as long as the animation were MUCH better.
"You know you've reached peak quality when a doujin is better than the actual source series." (Eg. To LOVE-Ru)

Just to list a couple of biases.
Likes: A good story, characters, writing, romance, a good plot twist or something that breaks expectations (In a good way), 'backstory' and justice.
Dislikes: Bad romance, too much fanservice, the harem genre, yuri, yaoi, and bad writing.

It's true that the animation wasn't too great, but not many in this thread are discussing the ideals the characters discussed this episode. I thought it was really well done that Tilarna decides to follow through with justice even if it results in a candidate she doesn't like being handed the election (although I guess she was convinced Molzeemay killed Zoe, so maybe it wasn't that hard of a choice).

Its decent. Its refreshing to watch a detective anime like this once in a whole. Thoug, Tilarna was reason I watched this. Heh. Poor Randall thou. At least that Zelada and Chan guy is dead.

Its just that the ending felt underwhelming.

Overall I'd give it a 7.5/10 as well due to some of the flaws with the ups and downs of the story progression and the studio either being still too new or I guess not built up enough for a consistent action-er like this when top tier animation clearly would have brought a lot more positive eyes to such an accessible action show with nice writing and chemistry.

But all the same, as others have said too, I'm one of those of us who would have to bring my actual score up to an 8/10 for me since overall I enjoyed the hell out of it and especially the two main leads, their partnership was extremely entertaining all the way through without forcing it, and who still looked cool thanks to Range Murata's source art style a lot of the time despite some odd animation and shortcuts, their buddy cop arc just felt so good.

As has been said several times I loved the combo to take him down. Preferably with a more experienced studio, but either way I'd love a second season so we can see more cases with Tilarna and Kei.

If we can't get that it'd be cool if at least the LNs somehow got picked up and translated.

They killed Zelada in the most brutal way possible, even Tilarna was flabbergasted by the whole ordeal! I guess he deserved it though after dissing porn and rock music. I'm also glad Marla got arrested, I really didn't like the bitch. I thought for a second there Tilarna would forgive her, but hell yeah. Too bad Randall had to die, after being so overly cautious for so long. That forgiveness to the police guy was funny, I should do that someday!

I really enjoyed the partnership of Kei and Tilarna. They didn't force their combination, it came naturally and definitely wasn't superficial at all. Although the animation quality was a little bit odd, I still liked it. The story was dancing around, but it wasn't bad for me. Overall I quite enjoyed and will miss it on my Mondays. I hope for season 2 someday.

7/10.

Honestly, I did enjoy it for what it is and I would say the connection between Kei and Tilarna is what sold this show.

The two are such a great duo and it was fun and interesting the conversation and chemistry of the two. This is what made the show and that ending together felt very genuine. It kinda wished the Anime was better in-terms of story and the animation.

Many seem to be wanting more of Kei and Tilarna which is the best part of this show, in my opinion.

Ah, was wondering why Tilarna and Kei were being kept alive: to salvage the evidence. Talk about turning a desperate situation into a gleaming victory.

After a tensed final fight our knights make the ethically sound choice about widow Mozeleemay. They endure.

Overall some far and apart outstanding fight scenes, communicative chemistry, excellent world building and that cop tone almost never seen in anime. Awesome show bogged down by its production issues unfortunately.

Just watched the final episode (dubbed, that's why I'm only watching it now). This was one of my hidden gems from this season. I don't normally like cop drama, but the mix of cop drama, alien worlds and cute Exedilicia worked for me. I liked the character interaction between the two MC, it didn't feel forced and there wasn't any stupid fan service scenes to ruin the mood between Matoba and Tilarna.

It seemed as it they genuinely started to become friends, and I mean friends, there didn't really appear to be any romantic attraction between them (Tilarna sometimes had a bit of a crush on him, but that was it imo), and that was ok. Matoba obviously had ex girlfriends everywhere in the police force & we didn't need them to be forced together.

I'm a bit surprised by the low score on MAL though, 6.91? I gave it an 8/10. It's not a genre (police, mystery) I normally watch but am glad I gave this show a go. They wrapped everything up nicely, went away feeling satisfied (not keening for a second season like some first seasons leave you feeling).

The tastes of MAL users sure puzzles me. I'm at least glad the folks at Reddit see the high merits of this show.

While much has been said about this show's animation, Cop Craft serves as proof of Millepensee's talent as a studio in spite of such low production values. Episode 7 alone is a great testament to that.

Now to wait on those Blu-rays and see the show in its ideal form. It's honestly been years since I found an anime I've been so invested into as Cop Craft. Stellar cast of characters, splendid dialogue, fascinating world, brilliant humor; this show is just a treasure trove of great writing that's sadly undermined by poor production ...and that dumb body-swap arc. Eagerly waiting for LN translations and the second season this really deserves.

Cop Craft is a very underrated anime. The story was unique and interesting (I also liked the message it sent). I enjoyed the fast-moving plot, a lot happened in each episode. I'm afraid Cop Craft going to be one of those hidden gem animes a lot of people don't know about. I happen to stumble upon it by chance myself. Score 8/10.

A bit late but nvm.
What really pisses me off isn't having still images in action scenes or similar, those are issues related to the budget and the need to mix it good enough to reach a good result in the whole duration of the series, it isn't even the "generic plot" that some are arguing about (spoiler: this isn't THAT generic, and anyway most things are "generic" at this point, it's more a matter of doing it right, and Cop Craft is more than enough for me, considered the "buddy cop" style of story).

What really pisses me off are the scenes in which the camera fucking focuses on random things, without having a real PoV.
These two last episodes suffered less from it, but as a whole the anime, more than action scenes or whatever, would have gained way more from a proper direction in dialogues.
I mean, ok, I am not watching this for action so I can stand the lack of good action, but then use the camera decently and make those dialogues more interesting.

Still gave it my 7/10, because it was entertaining as a whole and the characters are very interesting for the genre, and I really dig urban-fantasy that takes itself seriously without turning into a way to have a simple fantasy story in our world.

A second season looks unlikely at this point, but maybe it's for the better, the novels probably are a way better version of this. Gotta check 'em out.

This was my highest anticipated title from Summer 2019, a mix of Fantasy and Police/Crime Drama had me very interested.

Well I strolled through all 12 episodes in a single sitting and my verdict is the show was pretty good but maybe not as balanced as I had hoped. By that I mean the Fantasy side of the story just wasn't as strong as I thought it would be and later on it mainly took a back seat in many ways to some politics and power grabbing. Yes it played a part but the Semanian's just weren't that visible in the series in the latter stages.

I really did want more Elves, Fairies and general fantasy monsters in this series. An Anime Fables but it didn't manage to do something like that. It's not even on the same level as Hyper Police which is unfortunate as the shows are very similar. Though I do prefer this series to Witch Hunter Robin.

But as mentioned I still made it through the series in a single day, I still found the show engaging and once I accepted the plot I was given I think the show was fine at providing entertainment. I think the dynamic of Kei and Tilarna was solid and they were fun to be with.

I think the show might have been better if it stayed on the course it was on for the first 5 or 6 episodes for sure though. It was after that and the couple of 'filler' like episodes that all the politics came in and while true it was all connected it just wasn't quite as good as the earlier stuff. Also seemed like some stuff just never got followed up on in the way I expected it to be.

The Animation was better than I expected, that isn't to say it was amazing because it wasn't but considering the studio behind this show doesn't have a great track record I think it must be said that the Animation is more than passable.

Opening was awesome.

Anyway that is my rough take on this series. Probably won't end up being my favourite show of the year 2019 in the end but it didn't fail to live up to my hype as such, just maybe didn't quite hit the highs I hoped for but I liked it.

Finished the show in one sitting. Certainly, I haven't been so disappointed by an anime in a very, very long time.

All good that is there comes from four things: the source material, the character designs, the voice acting and the soundtrack.
I liked the characters and dialogues. Police department cast is very much alive and likeable, even without any development. Although Tilarna at times is too stereotypical of a loli character, she still definitely has her own personality, ideals and development. Matoba has a lot of potential but got almost no development in this season, which I was alright with, as it can be done later on in the story.
Most of all, I really liked the premise. The world is very intriguing, with kinda stereotypical, but realistically portrayed fantasy people of completely different culture being allowed into our modern city and slowly "corrupted" by it. Lots of potential political implications of the two civilizations' contact, not to mention massive backstory with armed conflicts and all being only hinted at in characters' dialogues as a matter-of-fact thing, which is always great for immersion. That we are never shown the "other side" is also a plus, as we have to reconstruct it in our minds based only on rare bits of information here and there. Because of the original and detailed setting, the main conflict can be taken at face value, even without racism parallels in our reality. All in all, this anime fully had the potential to be one of the greatest takes on fantasy in recent years.

Unfortunately, every "technical" side of the show is abysmal. I don't think I ever saw the direction this incompetent, with pacing issues all around, jarring tone shifts and long stills or close ups that have absolutely no value. I mean, I really don't think the director had any idea about what exactly he is doing or even wants to do. Episode composition is no better. The animation is really bad, there are at least several scenes with "complete meltdown" throughout the series, not to mention often use of still shots, which obviously were used not as artistic choice, but because of budget and manpower restrictions.

It is such a pity that what could've been a really unique and captivating show was turned into this mess, being produced by a subpar studio.

Have to disagree a bit with the OP. Dsagree, because we had some closure (well, we had a few of those already) and the characters were simply following their premises and not became the super og "friendship makes me stronger" most final episodes of anime with action do.
And just a Bit, because while the super strong alien/elf stood down for good reasons (she couldn't) the guy suddenly developed like super strength (they should've given him at least some magic-glow or something to get away with it instead). Plus there wasn't much else in the episode. Only hinted things, like humans not completely going right wing after the election, Tilarna having feelings for Kei (which were kinda obvious from early on). Only the battle with the big baddie, who could've just picked a weapon and shot any of them (why is noone aiming for the head?). So overall a pretty decent detective show. Cases closed, liked the Jazz in the ending. Deserved a bit higher ratings, tho.

Final verdict: Torn. Between 8 and 8.5

Like many others, I'm really torn, but I ultimately enjoyed it overall.

Loved the nuanced characters and how they played off of each other. The world-building did a good job of dropping hints of a larger setting, then leaving it to the audience's imagination rather than ruining it by over-explaining. The core bones of the plot were solid, and the themes were interesting.

But as has been said, it's plagued by animation issues, and the extremely uneven pacing didn't give the plot a chance to breathe.

I unfortunately don't have access to the original novels, but it smells to me like one of those cases of a strong source being let down by its adaptation.

The ending felt satisfying as the end of a first major arc, so I'd definitely love to see a continuation. However, instead of a second season, I think a manga adaptation would serve to leave behind some of the above issues and allow its strengths to shine.

Still 7/10 for me.

It's honestly kinda sad to see the score of this show here on MAL.
The only actual flaw this anime had was the animation, which was really horrible at times. The soundtrack was great, the story (with the exception of the 1 1/2 Cat episodes) was pretty cool and the characters were likeable. But that kinda just shows that many people only care about animation (how is it possible that The God of Highschool scored better than this? Like seriously, it had nothing except for the animation and maybe soundtrack).

It's a 8/10 for me. Probably more of a 7/10, but I liked the characters enough to give it a little boost.

- 2 points for the animation
- 1 point for the body swap plot
+ 1 point for loveable characters

though i can say least all the eps wasnt as bad as ep 3 i pretty much almost dropped this after seeing that

with that said again the series was ok but nothing amazing

in the end i only stayed with this series because of the cuteness that is Tilarna and thats it

if another season was to ever happen (which i highly doubt ) id watch for more Tilarna but with how they done things with the anime of this i dont ever seeing more anime of this series happening
