as a philosopher said better than i can, "this anime is very hard to categorize and it's due to that, which makes this anime shine. It's not simply a clone of another series. It's what every anime should aspire to be."

Some of these are well known here, but not with most anime watchers:
*Blue Submarine No. 6
*Yosuga no Sora (it is kinda popular/infamous, but few people who talk about it have actual fully watched it.)
*Moon Phase
*Boogiepop Phantom (Not Boogiepop & Others, but still enjoyed that one)
*Queen Emeraldas & Galaxy Express 999
*Re;Creators (its still "new", but most people haven't watch it except the 200 hundred people who actually use amazon prime for anime)
*Ms. Ueno (Not the greatest anime, but is pretty enjoyable and I love the artstyle.)
*Kodomo no Jikan (Manga only)
*A bunch of yaoi series
*Grimore of Zero
fuck they’re kicking me out of another McDonald’s

It isn't the best thing out there, but I really enjoyed the art and use of practical effects.

Maria-Sama for sure.

Based on the MaL score, close to no one knows about the show.

Normal people in the facebook groups just care about Battle Shounen or some Elite shit, so those kind of people woud never give this show a go.

Don't know if it fits into the question but I don't hear anyone around talk about Gin no saji. Honestly one of the best slice of life animes imo.

Eureka Seven for sure. It is literally the definition of a "hidden gem", though gem is not a good enough word to describe this series. I highly recommend it to anyone!

Honey and Clover is also a phenomenal series that I don't think I've seen anyone talk about before.

This was a just 13 episode thing, I watched it on TV back in the day, and it's still amazing. A shame it's not more known.

Not well known - Tsuritama https://myanimelist.net/anime/12883/Tsuritama

=a seldom talked about anime that usually gets boiled down to "fishing gays" but offers lots of incredible visuals paired with lovable characters and fun plot

Not well known - Area 88 https://myanimelist.net/anime/1488/Area_88

=an incredibly visceral and exciting anime that showcases the horrors of war, and the jet pilots that are at the center of the action

Underrated? - Pom Poko https://myanimelist.net/anime/1030/Heisei_Tanuki_Gassen_Ponpoko

Of all the Ghibli movies that take the usual backseat to movies like Howl's Moving Castle or Spirited Away, I think Pom Poko is the most tragically underrated and seldom talked about Ghibli film. A movie that is both incredibly accessible and at the same time heart-wrenching, this film about the magical shape-shifting animals is one of the best movies Studio Ghibli has to offer, and is in my opinion better than the famous My Neighbor Totoro.

I would definitly say Moonlight Mile.
It is one of the few not mecha-focused space shows and was actually really good.
Despite being from 2007 and having a rather modern character design (and decent use of cg for its time) it only has about 8000 members for its first and 4000 for its second season on MAL.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/1371/Hi_no_Tori

Another one i would mention is Hi no Tori.
Its a collection of shorts stories like Aoi Bungaku but a lot less popular with only about 6000 members on MAL.
Even though most of them were only mediocre compared to the ones of Aoi Bungaku they had really unique settings which i havnt seen often in anime.

Serious answer as far as series that have at least 8s or 9s from me and are not widely known or talked about today regularly here and on other forums in my opinion?

For something more modern which just seemed to pass everyone by

Cat's Eye, Area 88, Matsumoto Leiji works and Utena are by no means obscure, unless you are new to anime.

If you want obscure:

Sci-fi Harry. Takes place in the USA and would be better with an English dub. If you like esp, it is a must watch

Divergence Eve. Decent and serious scifi story if you can ignore the huge boobs by most characters. Which was the main reason many viewers avoided it.

Rescue Wings. Real rescue operations are rare in anime. No superpowers, no invincible characters. Slightest mistake and you die

Some day's Dreamers: Sora. Hal Filmmakers most underrated series. If you ignore photorealistic backgrounds it has very good characters and one of the best series of that year

Emily of the New Moon. One of the best children western novel adaptations, better than the 20xx wmt series.

Gallery Fake. Resembles Master Keaton in tone but it deals with paintings. Partial adaptation of a 30 volume manga

Rocket Girls. Girls want to fly into space. No fanservice at all and very good characters.

Oh! Edo Rocket: based on theatrical play, a very refreshing and imaginative series

Flag. Combines documentary and war journalism in a unique narrative.

Snow Queen. Rare to see that old fashioned animation style even in 2005,but it is one of the best anime fairy tales adaptations you can find.

Windy Tales. Unique visuals style and narrative, very soothing

Melody of oblivion. Jc staff and Gainax collaborate in one of the weirdest series I watched. Some episodes are still unforgettable.

Haunted Junction. Very underrated comedy series about exorcising ghosts

Human Crossing. Realistic seinen daily life drama

Sentimental journey. One of the best anime VN adaptations ever.

Strange Dawn. If today's isekai were like this one...

Space Pirate Mito. One of the best space comedy anime.

Eto Ranger. Zodiac animals plunge into distorted fairy tales to make things right.

Depending on your definition it would either be Kare Kano or Kyousougiga. Kare Kano had a more prolific director attached to it at the time of it's airing but nowadays it's not well known outside of a select few people, most of which are fans of Hideaki Anno. Kyousougiga was attached to a now somewhat well known director but she wasn't known at the time.

My favorite anime film, Little Nemo: Adventures In Slumberland.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/2286/Little_Nemo
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Nemo:_Adventures_in_Slumberland

I first saw it in the early 1990s, but had no idea it was technically an anime (produced in both America and Japan) until a few years ago.

Most of the ones that come to mind are more recent fare that got buried like High Score Girl, Kono oto Tomare, Revue Starlight, Hakumei to Mikochi, and Mahoujin Guru-Guru 2017 for "not well known", and while they are less popular generally (all have less than 100,000 members on MAL) they're hardly complete unknowns and are generally well regarded by those who have watched them.

Only one that comes to mind is Texhnolyze

There's actually a decently-sized group here on MAL that loves it to death like I do, but 95% of people outside it probably won't have a clue as to what it is
