On Your Mark. No question, no contest. Nothing even comes close.

If that doesn't count, then the answer is Millennium Actress. Maybe some questions, a mild contest. A couple films come pretty close.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

This new Shinkai movie seems to have the same themes as his pevious works - I think I'll pass.

I frequently seem to come back to Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer by Mamoru Oshii, which is still his best work imo.
Another one I rewatch more often than I'd like to admit is Ninja Scroll. It's always a blast, whether I'm watching it alone or with friends. Kawajiri's directing style is unmistakeably unique in anime - favourite director right there.

I'm not interested in Tenki no Mo, mainly because it was made by Makoto Shinkai, who made Your Name, which I thought was incredibly mediocre.
I haven't seen many anime movies, but I'd say the best one I've seen is In This Corner in the World: atmospheric, fantastic in how it transitions from a iyashikei to a drama.
Sure, Spirited Away is also great, but I feel that film is a lot more...conventional in its execution.

I thought Millennium Actress was terrible; the protagonist was one dimensional, I couldn't care for her motivation to find the guy whose name is never even said, because I thought it was completely ridiculous.

The End of Evangelion and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya are the best. Kimi no na wa was a solid 9 for me tho.

That's the 10-8/10 rated "completed" list subset for movies as per today. If you insist on 10 movies, a somewhat arbitrary pick from the 8s is needed. I'd go with Kaguya-hime no Monogatari, Liz to Aoi Tori, Koukaku Kidoutai, and Tokyo Godfathers here.

  • 10/10:

    • Mononoke Hime
    • Perfect Blue

  • 09/10:

    • Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion
    • Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
    • Hotaru no Haka
    • Omoide Poroporo

  • 08/10:

    • Koukaku Kidoutai
    • Akira
    • Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä
    • Tokyo Godfathers
    • Sennen Joyuu
    • Hadashi no Gen
    • Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu
    • Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki
    • Kaguya-hime no Monogatari
    • Mushishi Zoku Shou: Suzu no Shizuku
    • Kizumonogatari III: Reiketsu-hen
    • Liz to Aoi Tori

Shinkai is overated af. There is only good animation in his movies and a great character design (Thanks Masayoshi Tanaka).
In my opinion some of the the best anime movies out there are Hotarubi no mori e, Toki wo kakeru shoujo, and toshokan sensou movie was awesome

That is the one and only thing that I have thought resembled a truth in the society of human beings where I have dwelled up to now as in a burning hell.

I concur insofar that Shinkai's typical entry is a 7/10, which puts him in the league of the likes of Redline, Shoujo Kakumei Utena: Adolescence Mokushiroku, Kanashimi no Belladonna, Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome or Koe no Katachi. Which are all perfectly fine movies, by both artistic and entertainment standards.

The Shinkai twist is his accessibility to "Joe Average", non-anime, non-movie buff people. When I try to introduce a friend from that group to anime, I go with Kimi no Na wa., regardless of it being a "mere" 7/10. If it was an RPG character, that movie would be some Jack-of-all-trades balanced class, not a specialist. And precisely that is what Shinkai specializes in. Which is an important ecological nice ...

haven't watched Tenki No Ko yet.

I doubt it will end up being one of the best imho.

Nausicaa is really good, though I prefer Kiki's and Arrietty. Those are my top 3 Ghibli movies.

Also prefer Steamboy over Akira.

Love Redline and Dead Leaves.

GitS is great, but it's not my favorite. Also big fan of Armitage III polymatrix..

Wolf Children and Mirai was really good. In This Corner of the World was amazing.

Tekkon Kinkreet is also one of the best movies ever made.

Boy and the Beast, Sword of the Stranger

Galaxy Express and Interstella

Appleseed is amazing

Paprika, perfect blue, etc.

It's kind of hard to choose.

I might want to go with Tekkon Kinkreet due to bias towards the soundtrack.

Plaid is my all-time favorite band, and I was fucking HYPED to find out this London based IDM band was doing the soundtrack for an anime movie.

The fact that it ended up being fucking AMAZING is just the cherry on top.

Kimi No Nawa is extremely overrated and that's an understatement... My by far favorite anime movie is Kurenai no Buta.

Koe no Katachi. Made me feel anger, sorrow, happiness, and all sorts of emotions along with the characters. Nothing felt like fantasy, it was just so real. Watching it for me was an ethereal experience, and it beat Kimi no na wa, and any other movie as far as leaving an impression.
I could agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I don't think anything will ever surpass Macross: Do You Remember Love?, but it does require original series to be seen beforehand to be fully enjoyed, even though it is alternate version.

As far as stand alone movies go A Silent Voice wins but if we aren't talking stand alone I'd say End of Evangelion

Why don’t we become monsters and really mess up this awful world? Just destroy until there’s no more evil, no more sadness, no more anything…
Wouldn’t that be great?
