I was revisiting my anime list and looking over some of scores to make sure I didn't make any rash decisions (as we typically do when we finish a new show).

However, I saw "Boku dake ga Inai Machi" AKA "Erased" and remembered how dissatisfied I was with the last episode.

I love the entirety of the show, but then the last episode and a half or so just left me so disappointed compared to rest of it. I, therefore, propose my question:

Which anime did you think was a [near] masterpiece until the final episode (or two) somewhat ruined your overall impression of the show on a whole?

It's not easy to say one episode ruined a masterpiece. More like a few episodes before the final episode showed signs of going downhill.

I was thinking of bringing that up! If they ended it after episode 26 it would have been perfect...but then it dragged on for 10 more episodes.......

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the only one I can think of right now. The last episodes didn't completely ruin my experience of the show, but I was gonna give it a 10 up to that point.

Kids on the Slope (Sakamichi no Apollon) hands down. Pissed me off to no end, the last few minutes did.

Tokyo Ghoul and Beelzebub.
While none of them were even close to masterpieces, the last and last few episodes were pretty bad.

I think the last few episodes changed the pacing of the anime greatly, but they were great imo because of all the things that were introduced and the character development that occurred.

nice favorites btw

Dororo. It was a solid 10 up until the last episode. Nobody got a satisfying end to their journey.

Obligatory mention of Berserk 1997.
Obligatory rant about the "read the manga" ending.
Obligatory rant about Berserk 2016 being dogshit.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Future Diary. Sure, it wasn't a "masterpiece" per say, but it was a personal favorite of mine. I loved every moment until the last episode. The ending made no sense whatsoever and raised more questions than answers. Future Diary is a prime example of how a bad ending can ruin an otherwise great show.

Saiki Kusuo, the final chapter is not very good comparing to great two seasons.

from my mind right now is Darling in the FranXX is masterpiece level for me until episode 16-17(?) but then the last arc was weak or they did not execute it very well even though i still like that ending they gave

and ye i agree with Evangelion TV too

Damn, Death Note is definetly one of them, even though I liked other characters such as Near, after
the entire show definitely got a bit more tedious

Boku dake ga Inai Machi's ending is really average especially for those who wanted

Besides these two I'd say(and obviously a lot will disagree) Tokyo Ghoul √A, becaaause...
*cliff hanger*

The Price of Smiles is the biggest one for me. It was mecha that was similar to Code Geass and Aldnoah.zero where it really showed the tactics and strategy used in battles with politics on the side. Not to mention it was people versus other people not people versus aliens or something like that. It was awesome until it just had to go with a happy ending when it would have made more sense if someone at the end would have been killed. Why must we have happy endings, especially in a fairly dark show?

Soul Eater definitely had one of the worst endings to a great show. Great plot, great characters, and a great world design only to be ruined by an anime original ending.

Yeah, I was thinking of Erased too.

I still really liked the anime and the characters, and the twists that happened at the end were okay but quite random.

The endless cavalry battle arc didn't already do that for you? I don't even want to finish it anymore at this point, I want to like it for what it was. What a shame.

I'm one of the few who didn't mind the cavalry arc, there were great moments and the chapters after it are superb. The last chapter, I wanna erase it from my memory.

I really can't think of anything. There are plenty of mostly great shows with mediocre or questionable conclusions, but as for something where the final episode ruined something great, I cannot think of a single example.

I wouldn't go as far to say that it would have been a masterpiece if not for the final episode ruining it, but... well, I recently finished Your Lie in April, and it certainly could have been a 10/10 with a better finale. I won't go in to what my problems were with it here to avoid spoilers but it's a popular enough anime that I think a lot of people have read what legit criticism exists for the show and I agree with most of it.

Death Note might has been my favorite anime ever, but it went downhill steep after
and never recovered. Still rank it pretty highly tho, because the first part was really solid.

Classroom Crisis. While not really a masterpiece, it was still pretty fun and what setting up nicely for OTP ending...until the last episode decided to throw in a love triangle and an open ending instead, just completely killed all that ship hype

Love Lab. The drama towards the end was okayishly done, but it kinda ruined the hilarious rest of the show

Honey and Clover. There was so much buildup the entire series but the last episode was such a disappointment, didn't even feel like a conclusion

Not an episode and not that it "ruined" it because in my imagination it's easy to just ignore it and stick with the original ending provided, but I recently kind of thought this about Madoka Magica's third movie and the unnecessary twisty sequel-bait ending tacked on in the last third. If you just ignore that which reportedly was at odds with the creator's own original artistic vision anyway and was a studio cashgrab, you can just take the original 12 episode series as canon and it's almost like a Lain of the magical girl genre.

For me is Violet Evergarden around second half of ep 12, the train scene made me feel like it badly directed like Centaur no Nayami. It's not smooth and seamless(sorry for my bad english)

Can't think of any title fitting that description. But if we consider Death Note's last third as an "episode" guess that would be the closest.

I can't say a show's final stretch, last episode/ending etc. Has ever made me lower the score of how I feel about something overall. I'll certainly criticize that aspect for sure. But I feel it's about the journey and never the destination. You don't remember your destination because of the destination itself, you remember it because of the moments leading up to it

Gankutsuou. I just felt like the last two episodes were underwhelming and it could have been so much better - the ending of the show stopped me from rating it a 9 and it stayed at an 8. It's still an amazing show though, I'd highly recommend it regardless.

I wouldn't say it was a masterpiece but Charlotte's last episode nearly killed it for me. After all the fun interactions the two main leads had, they pulled THAT on me? I felt cheated just to have some bullshit "emotional" scene.

Every single anime where the dead are magically brought back in the last 5 mins or so. Case in point

Also Seikaisuru Kado. Because we really needed some trash romance action with a boobyfull alien and a misunderstood yandere in the last 3 eps of political slow-paced show about human evolution. I was ready to give it a 10 ffs and it dropped all the way to 7

Princess Mononoke.
It just ended immediately after the war, no epilogues and stuff. lol

Zetsuen no Tempest.
Epic first half, would have been a 10 if the second half wasn't subpar. (Second half was pretty good, but with the elements of the story, it could have been better)
