I'm looking for an anime where the main character or a strong supporting character deals with anxiety, preferably social anxiety or phobia but they overcome it or learn to accept it as a part of them. Can be any genre as long as it makes me feel and I prefer character development.

Its kind of late right now as i am writing this, so i can only think of two.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/16742/Watashi_ga_Motenai_no_wa_Dou_Kangaetemo_Omaera_ga_Warui?q=watamo

Watamote is the most cringiest anime in existence, its like taking the worst situations social anxiety can create and then multiply that by 100 and this anime is the result. Anyway enough ranting, the anime is about a girl who one day takes a good look at herself and realize that she isn't popular and then wanna change that. This isn't one i normally would recommend, but you asked for social anxiety, so thats what you gonna get.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/19815/No_Game_No_Life?q=no%20ga

The two main characters in this one do have social anxiety, but the issue doesn't get adressed at all, but its the only other i can remember right now. Anyway the anime is very good and its only sin/flaw would be to not give us a second season.

I hope you can find something good.

Happy anime watching :)

For a serious one, I highly suggest this one: https://myanimelist.net/anime/1210/NHK_ni_Youkoso?q=nhk

Believe it's the best one that deals with such issues.

Cool, sounds like me lol. I've been considering that anime but after some people recommended it I'll probably get around to watching it sooner now

Tsuritama, the main guy with red hair suffers from this I think.

Neon genesis evangelion, all the main characters struggle with something and one has both this and depression

Yuri, from Yuri onc Ice suffers from anxiety.

I have not watched egatsu no lion but I think it is one of the topics in the show?

Some not so obvious (and older) choices:

Neon Genesis Evangelion is all about the MC suffering from anxiety and depression. Definitely not the feel good-thing you might be looking for.

The ending of Tekkon Kinkreet did meet those standards for me of a character accepting himself.

Not to be silly, but the first season of Digimon is all about character development and has every character struggle with him or herself and they have to grow and accept their own personality traits as strengths in order to have their Digimon Digivolve. It is for elementary school kids though :p

Several people have already recommended some of the big ones. Especially Koe no Katachi, I sob like a baby every time I watch it.

You said you wanted something powerful, but bear with me here. I recommend Comic Girls. It's not a drama at all. Not even a little bit. It's a slice of life comedy about four girls who make manga, each in a different stage of their career. The main character Kaos, is adorable, funny, and struggles with some of the most relatable anxiety I've seen from an anime character. The show never gets super heavy, but there are several parts where I legit wanted to jump through the screen and give the poor girl a hug. (Also her constant self deprecating humor is both funny and kinda sad.)

I'm probably really bias though. It's not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but being an aspiring comic creator myself I really liked and connected to it. Another thing I liked though, cute girls doing cute things shows are kinda known for teasing lesbian romance without ever actually going through with it or confirming anything as more than subtext. I can happily say that isn't the case here. The show is very upfront about any and all romantic feelings. A nice change of pace for sure.
