Basically we will be getting More apps to use this website. We currently have MAL which is official but lacks a lot of features but if third parties can take part we will be seeing a lot more new and cool awesome apps! To choose from.

I've always had to log in to my phone browser every time but if im encouraged to use the app it would save a lot of time for me and I feel like I would interact with the forums more.

Used Pocket MAL for years, so I'm very glad that I'll be able to return to it! And maybe a new app in the future I can use for more old-school recs to watch, I can be hopeful!

I am just glad you guys managed to save the site. Hopefully no more issues in the future. I have no problem waiting for an API that was the least of my concerns, and I think that goes for most of us.

Will the new API support the ability to search for all anime that start between two specified dates (regardless of end date)? If so, will this feature also be supported in the Anime Search filters?

Well, duh. Time to finally implement a proper API for MAL, then \( ̄︶ ̄*\))
Psst...
Hey, You use Windows 10? Great!
Wanna try Cafeine to simplify accessing your collections, or even your "collections"? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
No no no, you won't find it in the market, or even a store, no.

Try it first before others gotta get it publicly sooner or later!

Thank you.

The only reason I use this website is because of the recommended anime section. It was the best. What's the deal, bring this ish back. You find a good show, you finish it, and you want something of a similar style. Boom. That's it. Bring it back. The change up sux. Does anyone else feel this pain?

I don't understand what you're trying to say. Recommended anime has never been removed.

It's most likely not my place to say, but I'm going to be obnoxious anyways.

In addition, these kind of requests and suggestions are better suited to another thread in another forum section. It's inappropriate to co-opt this thread for non-api related questions. Please voice your concerns there.

This is about unofficial apps, not an official one. I think they will release an official one again at some point, but it needs a lot of work still. The unofficial ones were much better.

But still I think for safety using official one is best choice then unofficial

@poorloading I don't believe it's my place to confirm or deny Taiga's involvement. I suspect erengy has already been spammed with that question, though...

Unfortunately, I almost doubt that erengy will do it, but you never know. Please let me know if you find out any information. I want Taiga back more than anything else, because the syncing from Kitsu always malfunctions.

Awesome. I hope things turn out well. I personally love Taiga and would like to see it back on MAL over any other program. MALU is fine and all, but it's not enough for me. :(

That is absolutely amazing!

I'm currently working on an open source anime streaming software on iOS and I would love to know how to join the closed beta and participate in the open beta.

Is there any way to prevent bootleg streaming sites and pirate streaming apps (e.g. what the previous two posters want to build) from interfacing with MAL's database via public APIs and such? Back when MAL emerged from its maintenance/restructuring hiatus last summer, we were told, "As part of ongoing efforts to support the anime and manga industry, the Fansub Group section of the site has been removed." Allowing criminal actors to provide MAL tracking/integration on their services goes against that stated goal, as it lets them gain an advantage over legal sites, which cannot provide the same feature. And that's on top of the ill-gotten advantages the bootleggers derive from being able to stream any anime they want for free without regional restrictions or paying for licensing/translations/bandwidth.

As stated here, legal sites apparently cannot share viewership data with databases like MAL, because doing so would violate confidentiality agreements with licensing partners:
Shinryou said:
I do not believe that we will ever freely share consumption data with a 3rd party like MAL or any other tracking service. That data is actually way too high level to be shared with a 3rd party. No premium streaming service shares data like this with 3rd parties. Content consumption stats are key internal business metrics, which are basically only for the eyes of the service itself and its content licensing partners. Allowing someone from the outside to gain data through an official stream would allow the public to track that information and extrapolate usage stats of the service.

That means that any sort of stats keeping on external services needs to be entirely manual and done by the customer, so the numbers remain fuzzy and inofficial.

In short, allowing 3rd-party app usage that serves anti-industry purposes would go against MAL's stated pro-industry mission. Yet every other week on r/animepiracy, you can read about some new pirate app that boasts of MAL integration and/or automatic tracking like it's nothing.

We aren't allowing it, it's more like we haven't found an effective method to combat it yet. These apps claiming MAL integration are either: a) just scraping the DB data, which we know is easy to do, or b) requiring the user to give login and passwords directly to the app, which lets the app seem to login to MAL as the user themselves. The second is probably more easily combated, but due to our wonderful owners before DeNA who let the site sit and rot for almost half a decade, we're still caught in this constant mode of catch-up. The first is difficult to prevent from a technical viewpoint as far as I understand from my discussions with DeNA's developers over time.

Since I've posted this announcement, I've been approached by app developers who incorporate illegal streaming and who are asking for access to the closed/open beta—we've rejected them. We will also be monitoring who is using the API once it goes public. Then, in the future, hopefully we can deal with the rest. I hope this answers your inquiry.

Just seen MAL owner update on API, thank you! Although I know I’m bit late since it was posted in July and I just noticed it now in September 🙈. I been trying my best via MAL website as I’m used to doing it via API. As I used two 3rd Party.. Pocket MAL via android phone and iMAL via iPad.
