I was wondering why people hate anime so much. I mean, they're pretty cool and all, so what's to hate?

There is actually a scientific explanation for this. If you have a bigger amygdala, you will react fearfully to unfamiliar things.

For plenty of reasons:
1. They had watched some weird/bad anime or some scenes which don't suit them.
2. Anime in general needs time because stories are like a journey. Someone who watch just movies may not get into anime because anime need your time to give something back to you.
3. There aren't that much anime movies which surpass anime series in general.
4. Stereotype that anime is just for kids.
5. Even if someone like it and just don't wanna watch it either because they have other preferences or they didn't give enough time to anime as I said that it is mostly the series which we recommend to people and even people like it they just don't wanna watch it due to time issue.

Probably, why people hate something in general.. Probably same rules apply to anime..
Majority of people I encountered, who actually not just felt "meh" about anime, but actually hated.. They were thinking it's for children or losers, so they don't want to deal with anything people like this like.. Of course, it's not so, but eh, some people believe so.. And other big part of who actually hated anime I knew - some trolls.. Just saying they hate something, so that people around feel bad about it, getting pleasure from this.. Or some bullies, using anime as a chance to bully someone.. Of course, there are others, but I didn't actually encounter anyone, who would hate anime for other reasons..
Majority of people don't actually hate anime, though.. Majorly just not interested..

Okay, someone can please tell me where did you find all those anime haters? Because really, everytime i see one of these threads i have the sensation i live under a rock or something.

But, for my past experience, it's always the same: Ignorante people wants to feel validated their biased opinions, despite they lack a solid foundation, because most of them have barely watched one completed anime in their entire life. So they go to share prejudices with more prejuidiced, ignorant, close-mimded people, and create a beautiful echo chamber, where they can spew bullshit.

There's just a lot of shit in anime which the public eye doesn't like/thinks is weird. Fanservice is the obvious one. Sexualizing any cartoon/game etc. is already seen as weird, then you have a medium where it's basically an everyday thing.

People most of the time "hate" anime without actually hating it. I've brought many people that "hated" it into "liking" it, a genuine try does the trick.

"Why do people actually hate anime?"
1. A lot of anime fans behave like idiots - they create horrible image for the community.
2. Hating on something feels goooood.

Let me see:
-Anime Fandom that likes to act inappropriately and edgy in public
- Anime is Weird
- Many mistaken hentai for anime
- Bandwagoning other's hate it within their friendship circle so they don't want to be the weird one out.
- Fanservice and Sexualization of lolies it put's off some people
- Weird merchandise

That said as anime is becoming more and more mainstream it is becoming more acceptable and respected.
I don't see nearly as much hate for it this days as I used to.

Because anime is a product of a foreign culture with a vastly different social outlook and world perspective, not to mention different moral sensibilities. Most people are highly social creatures that develop a preference for what is socially familiar to them. Anime fans on the whole tend to be much less slaves to groupthink. Personally, I know I am largely uninfluenced by social norms and the judgment of others. Most of my general outlook is based on what I decide I like / don't like / think is right. I rarely let society decide my opinion on most things.

The biggest single facet of anime for which these ideas can be applied and analyzed is cute young girls.

Japanese culture has much less of an issue with the idea of both appreciating and celibrating the beauty of youth in general. Shota / Loli is seen as a bit of a weird fetish, whereas in the west the vast majority of people when they see girls with barely pubescent features even slightly "sexualized" they are horrified due to western value systems.

As a brief aside, I hate the word "sexualized". The human body is naturally sexual. The word represents a world view which is willfully ignorant of the sexual side of life because of frankly retarded, backwards views about sex, paranoia, and a lack of social trust. Japan allows loli/shota not because most people are ok with it but because they trust each other to have the empathy not to harm others.

I could digress further and go in to the actual debate around the "sexualization" of young people, but I want to keep this brief and stick to my original point, which is about culture.

Anime is largely still niche / unpopular in the west because it is Japanese. Just like how Bollywood is nowhere near as popular as Hollywood because it is Indian. The celebration of youth is one of the biggest aspects. Not just for the sexual reasons I mentioned before but anime as a Japanese subculture truly celebrates youth in many ways. People often complain about how much high school anime there are and just assume it is because the audience are all high schoolers themselves. But the anime audience is much more varied than that.

The thing is, Japanese people, and many western fans like myself, like to see a story involving people around high school age because it an exciting, high-energy, beautiful time in life where people are making friends and lovers and discovering the world. But the west tends to prefer stories about "adults". In the west, kids are seen as kind of stupid and people would rather see people that have "accomplioshed" things in life (capitalist achievement-obsessed culture).

This is true for Japan too in some sense but to a lesser degree, there is clearly a strong undercurrent of non-comformist, anti-achievement-obsessed subculture which has blossomed in to what we know as the Otaku culture. It's these attitudes that produce so many single NEETs; a group of people that reject the notion that their worth has to come from acquiring a mate or working for a capitalist system. This will offend some people I'm sure, but otaku culture is fundamentally anti-capitalist, and anti-western.

for people who never even tried watching anime and say they hate it, it depends on many factors.
adults may link anime to pedophilia or "old men who watch cartoons" which is completely not true.
teens will say anime is lame and throw a billie eilish cap and a netflix t-shirt at you, because teens hate anything that's not trendy.

there is also a minority of people who say they hate anime because they ran into a shitty one like boku no pico or magical girls site.

I don't think I know of anyone who's actually seen an anime from a genre they like and hated it. There are those who simply refuse to try it but they don't hate it, they're just indifferent. I've heard plenty of reasons why people would refuse to try watching anime: cartoons are for kids, I can't get invested in cartoon characters, the character designs bother me, Japanese sounds weird to me, etc.

A lot of people who hate anime haven't even seen anime before. Which is a real shame because anime has a lot of genres that regardless of what you're interested in you could find something for you. Other than that, maybe the fanservice and ecchi aspect of anime? Not everyone is really interested in that stuff and might turn someone away (even though if you turn away from anime completely just because a few series are filled with fanservice and ecchi you're kind of close-minded...)

not gonna lie i’d watch it and further the hikkikomori conspiracy

but to answer the question, anime can be just very different than what other cultures are used to, and anime also gets somewhat of a bad rap online because of weeaboos, certain anime and overall just a misunderstanding of the medium or a distaste or it. i wish people didn’t hate what they don’t understand though, yknow?

As an anime watcher myself, I dislike most anime myself for not having original story, plot, settings, and characters, so for those who haven't watched them but hate them it is not really that unfathomable.

Besides, not all Japanese people watch anime or read manga too, and there are even normies in Japan that don't watch or see those Otaku stuff ( they call their normies "Riajuu" ). So, anime is predominantly an Otaku culture and definitely not mainstream culture in either Japan or the West...... It's just that the Otaku culture is stronger in the home country Japan than other places......
I frown at recent installments of Persona and Trails of Cold Steel that introduce harem-like elements in the story.

We need more JRPGs like the past Lunar series, where there are multiple romantic pairings in the party other than for the protagonist and main heroine.

Well, if you refer to people who only hating it because they don't like it or don't want to be called otaku just because watching it, I think they just misunderstand the art. Or they probably have try to watch it but turns out didn't like it as much as their friends who like anime or because he just being the one who wants to disliked everything. Or maybe to put it simply, they more like to watch real things. In summary, it's obviously not their taste in the beginning

Why do people hate anime? Because they assume anime is something that isn't.

A friend that I know tried to get his group of friends to watch Death Note with him. They asked what Death Note was, and he said it was an anime. He didn't even get to explain what the anime was about. His friends instantly shot his idea down, and told him they didn't want to watch "something racy" (they think that all anime is overly sexual).

Most people that have never watched anime think falsely of what it is. From what I understand, most people assume anime is one of two things: something for kids, something nerdy, or something for people that love seeing boobs. To be a bit more specific on that last one, they assume anime is animation that is overly sexual and is all about sexy girls. A lot of people don't have a clue about what anime is all about. They thinkthey know what anime is about, and think it's something childish or sexual. They think all anime is like Pokemon, or like Highschool DxD, but they have no idea about what anime truly contains. They don't know how wide and varied the anime landscape is. They don't know that anime can be an epic thriller, a captivating drama, a heartbreaking love story, or an entertaining comedy.

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become irrelevant.

to paint some broad stroke reasons:
they think cartoons are inherently for kids
they realize anime isn't actually that animated
frequent sexualization of under aged looking characters
a lot of it takes place in school
a lot of it is legitimately pretty shit
a lot of it isn't in english
when it is in english, it's dubbed by voice actors that couldn't get a gig anywhere else

Wait, why do I like anime again?

It is a weird question to post on the forum of a community made of ''peoples'' who obviously don't hate anime. ''Peoples''? That generalizes a lot.

Anyway, there is many reasons why some people would hate anime:

- The hardcore and non-casual comunity can be very toxic. If they are not toxic they are weird. Or very obsessed. Or creepy. Or childish. The only cool peoples who watch anime are the casuals.

- It promotes heavly sexualization of children and minors, and even child pornography with is a problem. Not only that, but even before the pedo community tried to paint themselves in a much more friendly manner by adopting the title of MAP - Minor Attracted Person, and try to enter in the LGBTQ community, the anime community come up with the weirdly tolerated and promoted term of ''lolicon'', which basically ended creating a much more friendly environment for pedophiles, and superficialized a very serious issue... I don't really know why the anime community thinks is alright to treat pedophilia in a fun manner and as a joke.

- It has backward Japanese values, especially towards women, which can be seen in a very bad way by the West. It presents sexual assault and molestation as comedy which for the Western audience is unacceptable. A good example is Nanatsu no Tanzai, where Meliodas is molesting the female protagonist in almost every episode, and she is very fine with it, since the beginning, since before she knew him, before romance... Being used with it as anime fans we are not that bothered (which gives many peoples, more reasons to hate us), but for an outsider who doesn't watch anime, and watch such a scene at random or the first episode, is obviously not normal.

- Hentai.

Those are the ones I can think of now, but there are others too.

I think they are old minded and can't adapt to new generations' art/entertainment forms..
And because mostly bad animes are popular. And most of the people see 1-2 bad animes and they act like they have watched enough anime to hate the whole culture. (their bias)
Well, yeah there are acctualy a lot of horrible animes. But every viewer should acknowledge that there are gems too.

The main concern is how people are exposed to anime. For example, people in my country are only exposed to kid animes (which can easily be misunderstood as simple cartoons) and the likes of DBZ. They get the mindset that anime is most likely for kids or those who love hearing people battle with shouts (because let's be honest, Dragon Ball is not really more than eye candy in the end of the day). They don't know about the other genres and other great works, they literally have no way to get exposed to it, since alot of things are just untranslated for us and we also don't market it at all (and worst of all, only around 5% of the animes are dubbed), dunno about mangas and other in the media, I'm not a city person. Most people here also can't speak English well, that's also another minus. So yeah, I'm generally open to people about my likeness for anime, but I also know that it would not do much good advertising it for those who are not interested. Though overall I don't really get hateful looks from people for it.

But that's what makes this medium so unique. Not everyone is going to dig it.
