What are the steps you take to enjoy to the fullest your anime watching expiriance.

Here are the steps I take:

Step 1: I visit MAL (seasonal anime) or livechart.me to choose whichever anime series I plan to watch, about 20+ series.

Step 2: When the series finish airing, I pick one and check if it has a sequel peding approaval, prequal, alternative version, setting or a spinoff series. If it does I add it to my plan to watch list and may even postpone watching the anime that just finished airing.

Step 3: After doing that I finally start the anime, if I like it I finish it in one day.
If I don't and drop it at the 1st or 3rd ep, I visit "rule 34, e-hentai galleries and danbooru to make myself "happy", indulging in the doujinshi and erotic pics of the now dropped anime.

Step 4: After I finish an anime I liked, I pilfer an image from "zerochan, danbooru or google images" add the title of the anime to the image and save it in a folder on my computer. Immediately afterwards I add it to my completed list on MAL.

Step 5: I visit "rule 34, e-hentai galleries and danbooru to make myself "happy", indulging in the doujinshi and erotic pics of the now completed anime and repeat the cycle

Now what about you guys?

My ritual consists of:-

Looking for an interesting anime

Finding that anime

Watching it

Pretty mind blowing stuff, I know.

To judge others by your own standard is the height of folly.

Hmmmm
I look up anime and manga up on MAL with a good ratings and reviews.
I battle with my brain over which anime or manga I want to start. It takes up most of my brainpower.
Then I binge it completely. Then if I feel like it I finish the sequels or wait for some time and watch something else. Generally I finish the sequels in one go with the anime.
If there's an interesting development I look up the discussion threads on MAL.
After finishing it I again battle to decide what to take up next.
Rinse and repeat.
"You are the result of 4 billion years of evolution. Act like it."
"Why don't you eat make up? Then you can be beautiful on the inside too."
"'Sick'? Call me 'twisted'. 'Sick' makes it sound like there's a cure."
"What's messed up isn't my thinking, what's messed up is this god damn world."
"The world isn't perfect, but its out there doing the best it can for us. That's what makes it so damn beautiful."

Step one : find a show then watch it

Step two : have a great wifi and remove your shirt and pants for literally no reason if you're alone

Step three ......

For hentai, I find a time when nobody can disturb me usually late night and binge through a dozen one shots and doujins to find a good one.
Every single day.
Rarely I find some really good serialized hentai which I then add on MAL.
I stopped watching a lot of hentai ever since HH had gotten banned.
Not a lot of good new stuff since its back though.

whatever seasonal anime that has a high score or or everyone is talking about.
as for older shows, there are many famous one that i still haven't watched so i start with those. also a show that is highly recommended to me by someone.

if the anime is fast paced or if i'm enjoying it a lot, i watch it as much as my time allows. it it's a slower one (like monogatari or 3 gatsu) i'll take my time watching it.

if i decide that i don't like a show at all, i'll drop it without adding it on my MAL list.

I do that to, good to know I'm not the only one.
I do however add a dropped series if I've watched and finished it's 1st season or spinoff or whatever.

The feeling of shifting an anime series to 'Completed' is just sublime, but its got to be earned, it wouldn't be satisfying if it didn't come at the end of an enjoyable watching experience.

I'm 8 eps into Code Geass and really, really enjoying it. May try and keep watching all night, I've got to know how it all ends, will Lelouch become the new emperor?? *says sitting on edge of his chair* ^_^

Hi there. You've got another user who doesn't add dropped anime to MAL. I only add stuff i watched or i am watching, basically. Either way, happy not to be the only one doing this kind of thing, not that it's too important.
I always used to Ask myself "Do they like Everything or do they simply not add dropped anime to MAL?". Seems like the latter was the truth.

I don't have any ritual, I basically watch anime or read manga whenever I have time to, wherever it is possible.
I like watching undisturbed, no checking my phone or something while watching/reading and I always use headphones for maximum immersion.

About the listing dropped stuff ... I do not add anything if I just watched one ( or not even a whole ) episode and decided not to continue watching it. But two or more, I do add it. If only just to remember, hey, I already tried that. My memory is bad -.-

I don't have a standard ritual, since I basically watch whatever I want, whenever, but I were to devise a ritual, it'd probably be something like this:

1. Read some iconic text or arc words or something that is sort of an "interest hook". Usually a short snippet of text, like a character quote.

2. Listen to the soundtrack. Get used to the feeling of the work's soul.

3. Actually watch the show.

4. After finishing each episode as well as the show as a whole, take some time to think about it, about the characters and their experiences, and so on.

5. Enjoy looking for fanart of it that is iconic of the story and/or of characters I'm quite fond of, or otherwise suggests conjures up certain thoughts/emotions about the characters/setting/story.

Interesting topic, I've often wondered how other peoples' watching habits differed. I tend to have a few layers to the way I watch anime atm:

1. I have a number of currently airing shows that I watch as the season progresses, so I can only watch 1 episode per week of these shows. Current examples: Danmachi, If It Was For My Daughter..., Hensuki..., Do You Like Your Mom..., Magical Senpai & Cop Craft.

2. I also have a couple of longer running anime on the go: Fairy Tail (Final Season) that I can also only watch 1 episode per week currently & Black Clover (haven't caught up yet).

3. Then I try to pick one medium length anime to watch (22 - 26 episodes) to get through at a time, last one was Boku No Hero 2nd Season and the current one is Code Geass 1st Season.

4. Finally, on top of the other layers above I try to have one or two short anime series on the go at any one time. Currently they are Devilman Crybaby and Snow White With The Red Hair.

In this way I try to get through a range of shows and give myself a variety of ongoing anime that I can watch throughout the week. If I find myself struggling to get through a series (this happened with AoT S2 last week) then I may put it On Hold until I want to pick it up again.

I use keywords to find anime that I want to watch.
Director, references, subjects, start date and genre is examples of categories I use.

If an anime is what I am looking for, then I use it to find more anime.
Discussing anime is also important for me.

My interest is mostly in how characters talk, I avoid shows that have too much inner monologue reactions.
I look for shows that reimagine or satirizes society or depicts difference in use of words and dialects.

your ritual is interesting. Anyway, mine, for non-seasonal anime is:

step 1: scroll through socials

step 2: find an image/video about an anime I don't know or I never watched

step 3: search it on MAL, see the cover of the anime and completely ignore plot and mean score

step 4: yeet

step 5: finished it I add it in my completed list

---

for seasonal anime:

step 1: go to the usual preview of the season of MAL

step 2: see the cover who intrigues me, then read the plot

step 3: yeet

step 4: add it in PTW and start to watch them when ep 1 airs

1. Find an anime (usually on MAL)
2. Eliminate all distractions (lights off, noise-blocking earbuds in, etc.)
3. Pull up the episode I’m watching on my computer, and then link it to my tv screen via hdmi cable.
4. Get comfy on the couch, snuggle up in blanket, and enjoy!

I wouldn't say I really have a "ritual", but I guess you can say I usually go on MAL and find a series to start, or I pick a series I've heard a lot about. Then I just get cozy in my bed, typically with some food, and just watch. I do though regularly update my episode count as soon as I finish them/when I finish binging.

If it's an anime I'm very excited about, I clean my place the best I can: everything has to be in order. Same when I buy manga books.

I tend to eat before starting, otherwise my hunger might distract me.

The first thing I do, before watching any anime, is looking at the anime adaptions. Manga adaps are important to me, considering most anime adaps from manga usually mess up the whole anime adap by mixing up the scenes and create fillers etc. Afterwards, I consider the theme songs ( to make sure it isn't just a 'troll' parodic) anime. Least but not least, sharing to close friends for what they think of it.
I also need to plan a date to watch the anime, because my pc setup to watch anime is not so relax to comfortablly watch Japanese cartoons lol

LOL well... I could write a fucking giant post about this subject. Mine has changed quite a bit, from no ritual at all to (I shit you not) meditating before watching in addition to lots of other little things, to where I am now which is still somewhat ritualistic but a bit more casual (and no more meditating).

I genuinely think meditation is awesome and really puts one in the right mental space to enjoy an anime. It stops the mind from wandering quite so much which I had a problem with once and still do kinda. But I stopped because it's too time consuming. I try to manage my time to a certain degree and committing to 20-30 mins of my day sitting doing (and thinking) literally nothing wasn't worth the boost to my focus. But I encourage other people to try it.

The most important part of my ritual now is tea. I went a long time without caffiene but have been consuming it again to see if it helps me focus on my anime and it's worked a treat. Highly recommend tea / coffee, especially if you watch in the evening after a long day and you're maybe a little tired and unfocused.

though there are legit people who only dropped about 3 shows in 1000 they've watched.

Well, when I start something is because of a hunch. I suddenly feel like it. And I don't really restrain myself as you can see by my "Watching" number.

Then when I watch the anime it generally goes like: the more I like it the harder it is to watch.

And I don't read doujinshi or look at images of any actual anime. The higher the quality of the anime or respectively the character the more I want to beat to a pulp who made those things.

Ok back, when I'm watching good anime I'm careful about the time of day, my mood, and my physical comfort.

Then when I finish a high quality anime I don't discuss with anybody. I meditate over the journey and it's conclusion.

Love that, who said those oh so wise words, need to shake the person's hand. However I feel the need to mention that my "on hold" list contains anime I watched in the 1990s, before I got my hands on a computer and an Internet connection. Anime I do intend to watch again now that I'm older. Basically those anime are there for nostalgia's sake and not because I don't want to add dropped anime on my profile, I do have a handful of dropped anime there after all.

No rituals but I've established a rule of watching no more than 10-12 anime at a time. I like even numbers....
And once I finish one anime, I start another one to fill the gap.

Whenever I can start a new anime, I just pick whatever I feel like watching at that moment. I usually don't pay too much attention to if a show is popular or for how long I've been wanting to watchi it.
I try to keep the amount of non-seasonal anime I'm watching at around 4

Step 1: Wait for the mood to strike. Look for anime that fit the mood.
Step 2: If it's a new anime, I stream, if it's a sequel of a series I like, I download the highest quality video available.
Step 3: Watch at night, when everyone is sleeping.
Step 4: Use headphone, volume up.
Step 5: Put tissue box near me if needed.
Step 6: Pick the perfect time to watch. I don't watch in a hurry, on a trip, or in the presence of other people.

Thank you to everyne who gave their replies. I hope this topic made some of you think a little deeper about this hobby we all share. Hopefully you all can take some pleasure in knowing that, the longer you watch anime and not get bored of it, the more rewarding it becomes.

You all may agree or agree to disagree, again thanks.

I have a lot of rituals and sub-rituals regarding the things you described..... it's never so simple

Generally speaking, I have a downloaded anime folder and pick one based on what seems interesting at the moment (and when in doubt, alphabetical order). I try to not download too much at once, so i tend to have periods when i start a lot of shows, and periods when i finish a lot of shows, which i try to synchronize with anime seasons though it doesn't always happen.
I have a separate folder for OVA/movies, which works in a similar way.

I try to watch anime in sets of x episodes per sitting, depending on anime (e.g. shorter anime 3 eps is ok.. for longer it might be 5-6)

When finishing an anime i update my MAL, excel list and "currently watching.txt" @_@ This is probably the most ritualistic part of the whole ordeal

For ongoing series, i watch them on streaming site whenever i feel like it, so i usually get behind. I pick them based on actually studying the seasonal charts, which seems like not everyone does, many people prefer to watch just the popular/memed stuff

As for fapping, most anime have too few porn :( 20% of anime girls have 80% of porn. I might have tried that once too, but the things i watch usually dont have sustainable ammounts, so back to similar-looking-touhous it is

It might feel like I'm making a joke out of your thread, but that's actually what it's like for me.

I just look for an anime which has an interesting story, and not weird looking characters(I'm looking at you, Jojo), and I just start watching it.
