+ to Slayers, I almost never see world building that good. Has a consistant logical magic system with a well-described universe which actually has it's creator as a character, it's own mythology and history mentioned throughout the series and being relevant, it even has a world map where you can see . I recommend also reading the novels after the anime, they add quite a bit of interesting info, also they're darker in vibe than the anime.
I also agree on Made in Abyss & Mushishi wholeheartedly.
I also say CLAMP universe - Cardacaptar Sakura, Tsubasa Chronicles, xxxHolic, Magic Knight Rayearth, Kobato, X - all set in one universe with parallel worlds, where people who have the same soul but living a different life in each, some characters can travel between worlds (Tsubasa is directly about them), and some are known enough to surpass only one world, the universe has it's logic explained bit by bit in almost all their series. (Like for example they reveal what does teh title xxxholic mean not in xxxholic itself, but in cardcaptor sakura sequel) I recommend their manga more than anime though, because they have quite a bit of not adapted works, and in the adapted ones they sometimes omit the connections or setting details. Not always, but they do. If you're confused about the order, the release order is always the correct choice.
Also, Matsumoto Leiji universe - Ginga Tetsudou 999 (Galaxy Express 999), Captain Harlock series and Uchuu Senkan Yamato (Space battleship Yamato). Connected series with nice world building and unique premise. There's more than one version of the stories though - they have OVA and movies for alternate story develpment.
There's also Nasuverse famous for their detailed setting, most of their series share the same world - you can watch Kara no Kyoukai and Fate/Zero and decide if you're interested in the rest of the Fate series. If you're not, Fate/Zero is conclusive on it's own. It also has an independant sequel about one of the characters airing now - Lord El-Melloy II, I'm only an episode in and they're already keeping up with my expectations about the setting. |
