I recently watched White Album & I loved the first cours, rated it an ❽, but I ended up rating the second cour a ❹ because the story tried to be too ambitious & cram all of the visual novel’s material into the last part, the charactersーwho I liked in the first partーstarted behaving dramatically, often just to advance the plot, & the directoral direction changed drastically; has this ever happened to anyone else?

Edit: There was some confusion on the definition of coursーso, I provided a link to the Anime News Network article describing the meaning of the word. Hope that helps ‎|•'-'•)و✧

2nd cour as in literally another season, or 2nd as in after 12 eps?

In the case of the former, 1st that comes to mind is Aldnoah.0's 2nd cour which was just trash.

Almost rated Honey and Clover's 2nd cour lower than the first because the ending was just horrible but decided not to in the end.

Hamatora as well because it was probably the biggest shipping tease ever only for nothing to come out of it

I have a very high opinion of Tales of Zestiria the X's first season, but a lower opinion of the second.

I have a good opinion of AKB0048 First Stage, but a lower opinion of AKB0048 Next Stage.

I'll understand second cour as in another season. This for me would be Higurashi Kai, I gave it a 5, while the first season I scored it 8. Even if the second season explains the plot better, the
just ruined it for me.

I don't think many highly rated shows can hold up the expectations in a second or third season. For live action shows just look at Future Man...The second season was a complete mess, - same goes for Happy. Both are kinda unwatchable bad while the first season of both where pure gold. I don't think many non story driven shows have ever been able to top the first season.

2nd cour refers to eps 12-24 or of a multi cour show

Aldnoah.Zero 1st cour: Best boi Inahoe best cute, badass and awesome in every imaginable way. 9/10.
AldNoOneDies 2nd cour: Slaine Troy(ret)ard getting all the focus he never needed nor deserved and also being dumb as frick. And a 'lolwut' ending. 5/10.

Typically, a cour is a series that all comes out during the same year, but is seperated by an airing schedule. For example, the first part might air during the spring & the rest goes into the fall. Unlimited Blade Works is an example of a series seperated into two cours.

So a split cour is what you're referring to? To me at least 2nd cour refers to one that is airing the season directly after the initial airing of the show, which is why I asked that question e.g., Shield Hero had 1 cour in the winter and 1 cour in the spring

A better example would be Dororo being a 2 cour show

Simple. Rate based on what MAL lists for episodes. If it's a split-cour then it's going to be separated, if it's 2 or more cours continuously then it's going to be 1.

So technically it goes both ways.

First half of Moribito was pretty tense and intriguing with political disagreements and no antagonists or villains as well as enough SoL elements for downtime.

Second half was everyone fighting against a generic monster to save the world. No more politics, a 1d villain was introduced, and it gave up on the downtime that worked in the first half save for the Jigoro flashback.

2nd cour was considerably worse than first imo although both were flawed.

I listed Unlimited Blade Works because it’s seperated into two parts, per cour, on MyAnimeList. The series I listed in the first post, White Album, came out in 2009 but ep 1-13 came out at the beginning of the year & the second part concluded at the end of the year with ep 14-26.

I rated the second season of The Seven Deadly Sins a 5 in comparrison to the 7 a gave to the first season. A lot of the season was simply boring, as well as there being many things I simply found to be ridiculous to the point where they were no longer funny.

Okay,that was embarrassing

Totally forgot that OP meant second core of the same season, rather than the new one

thanks for reminding

My vote goes to fantastic children, jigoku shoujo along with some other series(about which i'm forgetting about).

Yes, there's always some variation even between episode to episode within a season (every TV show is going to have episodes you like better than others), but between cours two prominent examples stand out most in my mind.

Spice and Wolf - I rated the first season a 7 and overall enjoyed it, thinking it quite good and original. I rated the second a 4 and found it massively disappointing. Finished the show, but left a bad taste in my mouth with how they ended it and even so many bad storytelling choices leading up to the ending.

Shingeki no Kyojin - I rated the first season a 7. I rated the second season a 3 and was so annoyed with it it led to me dropping the show.

That's what I did with Tales of Zestiria and Hitsugi no Chaika. The former was getting too dragged out and the latter was just a mess which is sad because I rated both shows' first cour highly.

Shingeki no Bahamut:Virgin Soul, of course and it wasn't amazing but the second cour just ruined it. The Vision of Escaflowne becomes notably worse in its final episodes, can't think of any more examples right now.

lots of two cour series have a problem with keeping the story as interesting and good as they did in the first half. it usually has nothing to do with the people adapting a manga/LN, just bad storytelling on the authors part.

SAO, and a lot of the animes that I didn't finish is cuz I got the feeling that it will get a lot worse.
And maybe Kare Kano? If you consider the last part of the second cour.

In most cases, the MAL Average Scores don't mean anything, here is a question: were the works made before 2000 all shit?
Why are they so damn scarce in the Top 50? Think about how MAL is quite literally a filtered amount of the Anime fanbase.

Here's a timeline of the Top 15 in which you can check that, almost always, the scores are affected by the freshness, popularity and other factors that have nothing to do with quality.

Yes, OPM, MHA and food wars are 3 shows that I dropped. The latter 2 went on too long while OPM was almost like it was a totally different anime and went to a generic battle shonen.

Always. I usually rate sequels the same or lower. Out of 1000+ titles (163 days) I rated a sequel higher than first season only once or twice. It's Mob Psycho and probably one or two more.
And do we count shows with more than 2 seasons? If so, the things I rated higher than previous seasons: SnK 3 2nd And Jojo parts 5,6 and 7

Reincarnated slime, ushio to tora (the last couple of episodes were so much garbage) and ergo proxy, of those I've watched.

Well, I don't(never) rate cours separately(unless they air with break between them and they are treated like different seasons), so my answer is no.

Maybe. I don't know, but I think there was never a big score difference between seasons for me, I don't really keep track of my scores.
The only one I remember scoring lower is Psycho Pass S2, I loved S1, but S2 was disappointing. There was so much build up but no climax, I was kinda frustrated at the end, haha.

Edit: Wow, I can't believe I forgot to mention Index S3.... but my brain somehow erased all memories of it.

Yes, I bet everyone does this all the time, mainly due to the fact that there are many stories out there that shouldn't really be continued, but still are because the studios want to capitalize on the anime's success.

An example for me would be Steins;Gate 0 which received a 6 from me, while I gave the first season, Steins;Gate, a 10.

If I were sao producer I would have made 24 episodes of kirito fighting monsters and leveling up. Sadly, the 2nd cour is very weak and boring.

Most multi-cour series aren't split, so even if their second halves get worse you end up only rating it as a whole. It's not a necessarily strange thing except for the much lower part.

A lot of times 2nd cours (or seasons - you only can score separate seasons with separate scores) are worse. Not that uncommon. Especially original stuff that tries to do some fancy plot twist and stuff. Aldnoa Zero was worse in season 2.

Haven't given "much lower" scores though. If I checked my list I guess I could finde some where the 2nd season has a score that is 2 lower than 1st season - which is "much" already for me. A bit consistency would mean score difference only by max 1 point.

It's a rarity for me, but definitely happens. Typically, sequels reinforce my appreciation of a series as the characters & circumstances grow on me. It's only when something drastically strays from that immersion that it really takes its toll.
