| In the humble of someone who saw all the Monogatari anime episodes and tried to read the novel (the first 100 pages in Japanese...), I would recommend you to try reading the novels to judge by yourself. I find that the novels (well at least the first one) are way too slow for the actual content (somewhat meagre), and that without Shaft's talent to keep the viewer awake, one may get bored very fast. I wonder if this is because of the light novel format; if one compares with Japanese classics, they are often just a few hundreds of pages or even shorter, but with light novels, as they need to last (such as manga), some unnecessary discussions may become common. Especially with Monogatari, but I found this feature in another popular one (Yahari); 100 pages to just have the characters making cookies seems unsatisfying to me. |
| You said that English isn't your native language. If you can't read Japanese, then the English translations aren't going to be easy to read. The official English translations use complex words and grammar that are hard for even a native English speaker like myself, born and raised in the US for 21 years. That being said, I absolutely love the novels, and would recommend them to anyone who can read them. |
