the urban legend itself

definitely Mars of Destruction. And well it didnt disappoint. Or rather yes it did. Its just bad.

Sort of Tokyo Ghoul Re, but I dropped that at some point.

Its funny though how many people here comment with good or very good (going by MAL) anime and try to be edgy with it.

Not that I'm defending it's content because it's really hard to get through, but the fact that Shoujo Tsubaki Midori even exists is kind of incredible. Hiroshi Harada drew the entire thing by himself over many years with 0 sponsors. The animation is NOT terrible when you look at it in that light.

I heard a lot of bad things about Sora to Umi no Aida/Between the Sky and Sea so I decided to check it out to see if it was honestly that bad.

It was fine. It had a lot of problems with the world, story and characters, but it wasn't as bad as I was lead to believe.

I watched Mars of Destruction since many people think it's the worst anime. At the end, I keep laughing all the time and I didn't regret watching it. It's very entertaining.

Pretty much any that are considered the absolute worst the medium has to offer like Mars of Destruction, Garzey's Wing, Abunai Sisters, Skelter Heaven, Eiken, Utsu Musume Sayuri, Nami, Pupa, Psychic Wars, Kimera, and Dark Cat. There's really no reason to watch stuff like these other than curiosity.

boku no pico and school days, they barely had any type of a plot but i watched it nonetheless because everybody seemed to be talking about it when it came out but turned out all that hype was because of how bad it was (boku no pico especially, that anime left me traumatized lmao)

I started Mayoiga because people said it was one of the worst anime that aired during that season (Spring 2016). I found instead the best comedy of that year, and I regret absolutely nothing from watching it.

Infinite Stratos.
The first season was ... fine. But already in the second season I lost patience.

I think it was worth seeing ovas more than the whole series.

Samurai Champloo. I know other people really praise this anime for its unique and have the same vibe with Cowboy Bebop. But for me it's just boring and bland. I watch it out of curious after I watched Cowboy Bebop, people recommend this anime to me. I tried to finish it but I can't. I can't feel attached to this anime not like cowboy bebop. And the Voice Actress for Jin is really bad. Even though it's a good character, but his VA really ruin it for me.

Highschool of the dead, I watch it because people say it's good. but I think it was stupid anime and I drop it.

I watched school days being told it was the worst thing on existence. It wasn't great but it wasn't poorly written or anything. Sure I hated every character but that was a result of them all being terrible people not poorly written characters.

Ugh, the show that I watched was a yuri show called Yagate Kimi ni Naru (Bloom into you). My friend (lolicon who likes yuri animes) was hella hyped for that, LIKE REALLY HYPED. His hype made me feel curious, and so I decided to give that anime a try. I did a wrong decision. Even tho the show itself might not be bad (clean art style and animation, good voice acting etc.) it was cringy as hell for me. I am not a fan of yuri shows. The reason why it was cringy, was because I was expecting only 1 lesbian, but ended up counting around 5 of them. It's all followed up by hand holding and kissing, which was the cringiest part of it. I'm still having nightmares from it. I respect the dude, but I'm never taking any recommendations from him again.

Without choosing something too cryptic, I'd go with Big Order from the author of Mirai Nikki. While I accept that Mirai Nikki is full of flaws, I could at least get a lot of fun out of it. And Yuno carried the anime by a big margin.
The author does not seem to have learned anything from his/her other work. Plus unlike in Mirai Nikki, Big Order does not have a character that can save the show, nor does it have any enjoyable moments, I can't think of any at least.
So yes, the low mean score (by MAL standards) is justified afaik.

I guess it annoys them something gets more attention than they think it deserve? Would be the case with this comedy demon hunter thing this season for me. But I dont have the energy to write about it all the time.

Watched Mars of Destruction and found it isn't as bad as MAL rated it as. The plot isn't bad but it just was poorly executed.

I honestly don't like the term "edgy" as it gets thrown around way too much, however this anime was just fucking 40 minutes of edgy smut lmao. It was really just a terrible anime since it has like nearly zero animation and was basically a slideshow with sounds and voices seemingly slapped on as an after thought, and the writing was barely a tangible thing; however it was such a messed up train wreck that I found myself drawn to watch it all the way though just to experience the depths of depravity that are rarely ventured.

I considered writing a review for it but I wont bother so this thread will do.

What anime have you folks watched out of morbid curiosity despite being put off by various aspects of the show?

Zero animation doesn't bother me in such anime, because I really like Yami Shibai, but now... Now, you are not the only one, who watched it out of morbid curiousity...
I can't decide, if the 8-10s reviews are trolls or serious. Maybe they fell for "it's bizarre and disturbing, so it must be deep."

I'd give it around 7. I don't see it as some mind blowing psychological jerking fest because it honestly isn't. It's shock film in same way like Tumbling doll of flesh, Guinea Pig or Ebola syndrome movies are. The only comment Suehiro Maruo gave of his original manga I think has been "some of the story is based on true happenings", which comes off more like how quite many horror movies advertise themselves to make it even more disturbing to the audience. So really either you like shock film flicks or just find them trash imo, I personally enjoy them and searching them to watch but I understand not many find same enjoyment.

I'd also go on how it's one of best cases of softcore/pinku film as anime version but I'm good now

Oh really? Well, I understand, if others can enjoy this kind of horror movies. I guess I'm just unimpressed by shock films and rated some real splatters and shock films like Saw or Final Destination or others similar. We won't get on good terms in this life anymore haha

Someone said on one of the former pages (too lazy to look it up), it's not edgy, but a shock film. I don't know, in that case, isn't your whole purpose itself to make that movie edgy?

Also, I actually really liked some similar things like Akira or Perfect Blue with a lot of "shock" and body horror, but there, it was presented much better (to me). One reason is that the scenes actually made more scenes for a meta story and on a meta level too.

Out of the same curiosity, I watched Genocyber, or at least three parts so far, and I didn't find it bad per se, but I think the stories of such anime could improve a lot from being less over the top gory.

Uhm same for Attack on Titan, there was this one scene in part one of season three, that was... little bit funny, but shouldn't have been haha

I'm so sorry, but I actually found that funny as hell. :'D

Often. Clannad for example. I watch a lot of stuff to see what the hype's about, even though I'm 100% sure I wouldn't like it going in.

I think Yosuga no Sora and Oreimo, because I had heard of the incest featured in both series.

Actually, at first, I thought Yosuga was a hentai, which made it more "appealing" but I eventually realized it wasn't one. Well, it kinda is, but by the time anything was shown, I was only interested in seeing how far Sora and Haruka would take the incest route.

I agree. Mars of Destruction is only mediocre to me. I don't understand why anyone thinks it's the worst anime of all time. I can literally count off a dozen anime worse than Mars of Destruction off the top of my head.

- Pupa. I actually enjoyed the theme it had going on, but I didn't like the pointlessness of it. Boring.

- Tenshi no Drop. It wasn't even "so bad it's good", it was just bad. I've rewatched it a few times to remember why I don't like it. Thoroughly thought to myself "Ah. Yes. This is why I don't like it." Because it's pointless. I hate pointless things. And I hate myself for pointlessly rewatching a pointless thing.

- Sword Art Online. It's not that bad, but it's not for me. Definitely a lot better than Pupa or Tenshi no Drop.

What about the music clusterfuck? Or the bad animation? Its only a single episode, there isnt all that much you could out in there to fuck it up.

Well I watched these animes out of sheer curiousity..

School Days- heard and seen the bad reputation of this series but due to me being stubborn, I still watched it. Well I reap what I sown whaha.

Onii-chan no koto nanka zenzen suki janain dakara ne- i saw how people praise this certain series in anime amino. My hopes kinda rose and I have to admit some of its element is kinda enjoyable but over all, it's kinda um, you know, meh.

Boku no pico- no need to discuss. RIP. No to curiousity.

[Wtf, all of them are ecchi wahaha]

Ah yes that user was @jal90 and I do kinda agree with his definition of edgy. Edgy just reminds me of a teenager trying to act mature or dark. Basically failing at creating atmosphere and it turns in to laughable mess and using stereotypical ideas to make it dark/mature, I think. Something like using gun stock noise in Shadow the hedgehog game in the game menu.

With shock films it's also about reputation playing a role too getting a title "shock film". With Midori even some non-anime fans know it because it was censored and some scenes are lost media due to it, also child getting sexually harassed. Some fetish porn gets bootleg releases and passed around as shock films and few movies made outside USA get bootleg releases with different names to sell them more with logic "some fucked up shit you must see to actually believe it"(Vase de noces 1974 was changed to The pig fucking movie). Generally they're exploitation or extreme cinema indie films and have huge variety, some can turn edgy yes if not done right but firstly they're trashy b-movies which is one of their charm.

Akira and Perfect blue I wouldn't call shock films. While yes both have scenes to disturb and shock audience their whole selling point and focus isn't to be that. Compared to Genocyber you brought up that actually uses over the top violence and body horror to really get you going and compete against other over the top gory OVA's of the time. I think without attempted rape scene first part could have worked just fine, also that scalper group I don't remember what their purpose was. Fight scene was good so that's something.

Attack on Titan scene I can't comment because I dropped it a long time ago. It really just wasn't for me and I didn't like it's use of gore and mixing shonen elements and tropes. It just was really boring and art style they used in anime really didn't fit the story. Manga I tried to read but nah i still had same problems like with the anime adaptation. You could say it's one of many bad shows I watched due to hype surrounding it, so that's one example for me to this thread actual topic haha.

The last one, before that atrocity, was Gyo for me. That also gave me the "enough internet for today"-feeling. Although I liked the few manga I read from Ito Junji, but that movie was on a different level, oh boi.

Gyo was messed up. Possibly the worst anime I have seen. Like, at least some of Junji Ito's other works explored some interesting concepts. But Gyo... well... it was as if Ito had a fetish for farts and rotting fish. Your "enough internet for today" analogy is spot on.
