Action games are not limited to fps I hope you know that. But try the classics Doom, Duke Nukem, Blood, Shadow Warrior, System shock 1 and 2, Half life, and Deus Ex preferably on highest difficulties. Blood in particular even just on normal difficulty enemies will cut you down very quickly as soon as you give them the chance.

I enjoyed half life series because the story was great and it wasn't just mindless action which seems to be all the rage these days.

Then you owe it to yourself to play System Shock 2 and Deus Ex.

I prefer good gameplay, with interesting characters, items, and places that tell me about that fictional world by using their own design choices. So I care a lot about visual storytelling.

But when a game relies too much on verbal storytelling (I mean a lot of dialogue and long descriptions), most of the time it is something I want to skip and get done with. Specially when it looks more like a movie/book than a game.

Animes like Made in Abyss, Girls' Last Tour and Kino no Tabi are pretty much what I would love to see in a game, storytelling-wise: Just enough "plot" and a well-built world to explore.
