This doesn't make sense. How does the show have any substance and impact then if almost 1/2 of the beginning 60 chapters aren't adapted? No wonder I keep hearing how bad this has gotten

Chapter 47 (few of the last panels)
Chapter 48

chapter 49 (some bit in between were cut)

you know what it's better to pick up the manga from here.. because there will be plot holes if you skipped them
the first season ended around chapter 72ish..with some material glossed over

This was very useful to fill in the blanks as the anime was airing, thanks bro.

in the "2nd season?" thread someone said they jammed ~20ish chapters in 1 eps. it seems they werent joking around.

i read the 1st 20 chapters or so before the anime started airing, and it looks like its a good idea to skip the anime in general judging by other users review.
anime/manga version of steam would be awesome - https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1625396

An adaptation is about making choices, interpreting in its own way, sometimes even using a pre-existing work only as a canvas where you develop your own theme(s). (the last one is more for "author-directors" than simple "maker-directors")

I'll use an example everyone knows around the world: Le Compte de Monte-Cristo, by Dumas. It has been adapted countless times, in various forms (other written ones, theater, radio, cinema, TV, comics...). Several adaptations simply cut out half of the full novel (the part about the hero's initial life, the "treason" and subsequent emprisonment (sometimes up to the escape, sometimes up to the treasure, investigation or beginning of his second life).
And`even more strongly reduce its length. And yet, some of those works... work (more or less efficiently).

Theatrical adaptations almost always do that, thanks God. (thinking about it, this series would have benefited a lot of the movie format, helping it to focus more in the beginning).
