I watch anything. Listening to other people’s ratings is pretty dumb, sorry. You don’t know if something is good until you try it for yourself. My cutoff is 0 in case you’re wondering

Pretty much this. I don't even look at the score.

I just recently gave a 7.1 show a score of 9. For a show of 7.1 average still over 40% of the watchers gave a score of 8 or higher.

School Days with a score of 5.96 28% of the watchers are in 8-10 range.

Mars of destruction with an average of 2.32 and pupa with 3.33 have ca 7% of the voters in score 8-10 range (though distribution of that 7% is a bit different)

You aren't the average, you aren't the community-> you are an individuum.

I don't have a hard and fast rule on score, but score is one of the factors in deciding which anime to watch. That said, anything below about 6.5 gets to be an increasingly tough sell.

Not all of my preferences align with MAL scores. One of my favorite animes has only a 6.78 (admittedly that one is more a guilty pleasure than something I'd uphold as an example of great anime). Of the last two anime series I watched, one has a MAL score of 7.9 yet I had to drop it because it was too painful to continue watching (and I almost never drop shows). The other was 6.8 and I thought it was better than a lot of series in the 7.5-8.0 range.

Thx everyone wasn't expecting this many posts so suddenly. It's not as is if I take the Mal score for gospel but through experience it's pretty reliable. I also do read the reviews if I'm interested in the show. I also watch the shows that I feel appeal to me. I left out a lot of the things I thought were maybe common sense points. Also i feel "Cutoff" might've been to strong a word but it seems most people understood. I meant really "when you become skeptical or are likely not to watch it."I had to keep summarize so people would click on the thread. I do feel I should lower my expectations through reading these posts.

It depends on the era as well MAL scores you can pretty much ignore if the show is older or barely watched. Usually though anything below a 7 is my cutoff but again it depends.

If the show is <7.5 I'll probably not watch it. Not that it may be bad, I may give it a chance but below a 7.5 usually means the show doesn't have the kind of spark that other show have.

I don’t have a cut-off score. tbh there are still many good shows in the 6.5-7.3 range. Even 6-6.5 is okay for a more niche/obscure show. Below 6 usually isn’t very good but there might be some gems depending on your taste. If anything, I often get more disappointed by a 8+ show than some 6.something show, because a higher score makes me have somewhat higher expectations (even subconciously)

MAL score means nothing at all. It's highly susceptible to hype and casual viewers who rate everything popular with above 8 and people who back off from everything that has an unfamiliar aesthetics yet are bothered to rate the show. I watch everything and make my own judgment. It's relatively rare but you can find a lot of nice shows with a score below 7 or 6.

Many of my favorites are scored below 8. It is not because they aren't very good, but it seems to me their quality doesn't align with what most users want to watch. I've been around for years, and at some point I realized the site's scores barely matter. Most anime above 8 are bad, most anime below 8 are bad too. I think such numbers are a reflection of the community first and foremost, as in, most highly rated anime contain the same elements which normally please the same audience. I'm sure anime below 7 is almost without exception so poorly conceived it didn't even please the average viewer, so I don't usually adventure myself there. Anyway, you can never know. Just be sure 7s might as well be underwatched and underrated masterpieces. Akage no Anne, Gunbuster, Omoide Poroporo, Texhnolyze, Ponyo, the list goes on.

for me a low mal score is a score thats below 7 or so
tho i don't really care about an anime's meanscore at all, i do check out reviews and the scores those reviewers given to the anime

anime with scores above 9 are usually of great quality and thematic depth

anime with scores between 8 and 9 are solid ones

any anime below 8 are controversially above average

and finally any anime below a score of 7 are mediocre and not original enough to be compared to other anime

any anime around the score of 5 or below are unwatchable to me

those are my thoughts on mal meanscores
though i never take them seriously and im aware of the fact that you should never judge an anime before you watch it

I guess I would consider a low MAL score to be under 5 but I don't generally base picking up a show on the score. I've had a couple of shows that were under 7 but I really enjoyed. It just depends on what you like as scores are just interpretations of how others enjoyed the series and they might have been looking for something else from it than what you were.

Usually I avoid stuff below 7 but not strictly, exceptions are:
  • highly popular anime like School Days
  • short films and music videos because they are generally much lower rated
  • "so bad it's funny" anime like Mars of Destruction
  • anything that sounds interesting regardless of score

You're restricting your anime experiences by letting mal dictate what shows you can or cannot watch based sorely on scores, and that to me is a bad mindset.

I don't recommend you to do that, if you want to watch shows by rating at least you should use 6 not 7.5. I don't use the rating that much because most people are retards, check the genre, synopsis and the cover... check a couple of reviews if you are still unsure.

MAL score doesn't matter. There's a lot of really good shows that for one reason or another get lower than a 7.5. And different people like different things.

I don't really pay attention to the Mal score unlike a lot of people, i just add anime to my PTW list if i think they might be something i like.

Seeing as half of my PTW list is comprised of anime rated below a 7, i'd say i'm not overly picky, especially since many of them are obscure and/or really old and as MAL scores in general don't correspond with my taste, probably this goes even more so for these.

I would say my cutoff point would probably be anything rated below a 5.00, i wouldn't want to watch anything below that because it's almost guaranteed to be a disaster.

Another pattern I've observed is that older anime seem to get lower scores. I don't know the real reason for that, but I can speculate on a couple of possible factors:
- Some newer fans tend to be down on the art/story style of older anime;
- Fans who watch older anime may tend to judge anime more critically and give lower average scores;
- Older anime didn't benefit from the "higher score bubble" that new anime get during their initial release.

With 7 being good and 8 being very good score. I usually watch anime in between those ratings or higher cause I figure If it's lower it probably isn't that good. Now, I've watched so many anime I'm running out of higher rated anime, but I also work so I don't wanna spend my time watching trash anime, when I decide to watch anime. I love anime btw just not enough to sort through something that thousands to hundreds of thousands of people on average gave a bad score to. Ik people have different tastes, but Is this too high of a score? If so how low of a score are you willing to go? It will help me be more open-minded.

Considering 5 is supposed to be average, I'd say 4 or below.

However, since you guys don't know how to rate things properly according to the scale, 6 is probably low.

1. Ignore scores.
2. Pick what seems interesting or risk random sometimes to find hidden gems.
3. For entertainment check scores/reviews after watching something.

At least that's how I've watched past 10+ years.

Around 6.
Generally, those with a score below 5 are just bad or not work your time with the number of anime available to watch.

Though, I wouldn't depend on just a mal score to decide whether to watch an anime or not.

Description, art style, year it aired, reviews, etc. should be taken into account.

It's funny seeing all of these people with super high thresholds for scoring, have such small lists. I guess it doesn't matter for people who watch 20 anime a year, but why limit yourself at all?

I have no cutoff. Currently watching Eden's Bowy, and it's super fun. If I avoided it because of its 6.60 score how would that have benefited me?

Based on my experience so far, 8 and up is the sweet spot for great anime. Anything that’s a 7 may or may not be worthwhile but they’re nothing I’d go crazy over unless it’s connected to a good series in the form of an OVA or something. I’ve seen a few shows with a 6 and they’ve all been bad so 7 is my cutoff score.

The MAL score is not that bad. It's pretty intuitive, though I'd say 7 to 8 is where most of the good shows are.

There's a lot of bad shows above 7, yeah, but most of the good ones are in this tier. Even some of the most experimental and weird stuff that caters only to a very select audience, like Belladonna of Sadness, is there.

Below 7 is where things get a bit muddled. There are some good 6 tier shows, yeah, but most of them you can trust to not be very good.

Below 6, yeah, things get weird. I particularly never saw a good show rated below 6.

There might not be (m)any good series in that range but there's plenty of good shorts and music videos under 6 since those are categories that people tend to generally rate low.

There's also Ekoda-chan which is currently airing, but we'll have to see if the score doesn't jump above 6 once it finishes airing.
I probably regret this post by now.
