MAL ratings don't influence my own opinion of the anime at all. An anime with an average rating of 9 can still be shit in my opinion. But my opinion isn't everyone else's opinion.

3. For entertainment check scores/reviews after watching something.

At least that's how I've watched past 10+ years.
Yeah, that's essentially what I do. Or what I try to do, at least.

Don't really have a cutoff score. It'd have to be a pretty low for that to keep me from watching something.

I think a low score for mal would be under 6. I don’t think I’ll have a cutoff score and will give just about any anime that interest me a chance.

Anything below a 7 is "Really Bad" because anime reviewers, influenced by school grades of "anything below a 70 is a failing grade!!!", dole out 9s and 10s to anything passable. If you remove OVAs and shorts, there are a single digit number of shows rated less than a 6, if memory serves correctly.

HOWEVER.

Do NOT be afraid to try out shows that are below a 7.5, or even below a 6.5, on MAL. Some of this stuff is legitimately pretty bad, but some of it is actually just incredibly controversial, or just divisive. Shows with gay and lesbian characters tend to get review-bombed by certain parties who go "ew squick I didn't want gay people!", and mecha shows often face lower ratings from anti-fans.

Some of the highest-rated MAL shows are garbage, so the average review score is pretty tough to gauge. Use it not as a measure of how much you will like a show, but how much the average MAL user (a 16 year old white boy) likes it.

I'd say I don't have one because most times when I did watch something below a 5 it was just to see if it's really that bad, or for a challenge, or something. If the score is below 6, though, I'm uncertain about giving it a shot compared to something else on my list. A title, or the premise sounding interesting enough to me can lead to me watching a show scored below 6 on average, like with "Chaos Dragon". It can be generic as hell, pretty damn stupid at times, and it's scored between 5-6, but I still actually really liked it and it has really good opening and ending for how hated the show tends to be.

MAL scores are garbage to me and very inaccurate imo since what I see most tearjerker/ melodrama shows or hyped seasonal shows easily acheive high scores in no fail.

Personally I can just watch anything as long I have the curious of watching that show.

Anyway stop letting other people dictate if something is good or worth your time. It's boring as shit. Just watch whatever YOU think sounds good.

I don't always go by score. But in my experience, anything between 6.5 and 7 could be questionably decent, and anything below 6.5 is more often a no-go.

Anything below a 6. However, I think I rate too many anime positively and actually have yet to rate anything below a 7. That’s because if I don’t like it, I just drop it, and sometimes never bother to add it to my dropped list.

I do have a couple of low rated anime I plan to watch just so I will know what a bad anime really looks like.

I have two rules I go by. Rule 1 is usually used when looking for something different or has been recommended to me. Rule 2 is when I am looking for a particular story.

1. If the premise does not interest me, then is the score 6.00 or higher?
2. If the premise does interest me, then is the score above 4.0?

I also must agree with gigaparsec's experience a little, though I would lower the no-goes to be below 6.2 for my own experience.

My cut off is 7.25 for recent series and for old classics from the 70s/80s at least 6.80 since the userbase is usually smaller for those shows.

A low MAL score is around an 8, which is also my cutoff score. This also happens to be when more of those older anime start showing up. I just can't handle bad animation that looks old and weird robots. The 8.0 cutoff line is great as I get to see a lot of newer anime made this decade which I believe are improvements upon older anime. For example, KonoSuba which is an isekai comedy is funnier and better animated than Abenobashi in my opinion. Hopefully there'll be new good anime movies that meet my cutoff point like Pancreas and Your Name too.

As of this writing, there are 10502 anime on MAL that have a "normal" score (there are a couple thousand more that have a score but with a low vote count and are listed alphabetically). Of the normal scores, here's the breakdown by deciles

Top - 9.24
90% - 7.73
80% - 7.39
70% - 7.14
60% - 6.86
50% - 6.64 (the median score on MAL)
40% - 6.40
30% - 6.15
20% - 5.81
10% - 5.34
Bot - 1.90

Here's the breakdown by half-points. Numbers are the rank of the lowest at that number and include all higher scores:

9.00 - 13
8.50 - 110
8.00 - 581
7.50 - 1692
7.00 - 3715
6.50 - 5897
6.00 - 7883
5.50 - 9143
5.00 - 9965
4.50 - 10319
4.00 - 10422
3.50 - 10466

So I'd probably proceed with caution if a score is below 7.2. (I've seen plenty of good shows in 7.5 range)

Having a hard cut-off like that is dumb (the only exception being if, by some amazing co-incidence,you have personal tastes that happen to perfectly align with MAL's site-wide average- in which case, Congrats! You are a remarkably bland, generic, uber-average individual!)

People on MAL almost all seem to fall into one of two camps- [1] like you, they see MAL scores as a direct indication of quality, or [2] they think scores are totally useless, and that you should ignore MAL scores entirely.

Both groups are idiots.

MAL scores are useful. But they aren't a be-all end-all, and they DEFINITELY aren't an direct indication of quality; they're an indication of *popularity*, across a site with 5 million users of wildly varying tastes. That means that shit animes from popular genres get boosted, and amazing, high-quality animes from unpopular genres get buried.

MAL scores have *some* utility- for example, if you compare two animes *in the same genre/era*, usually the one with the higher MAL score will be the better one (and even that rule has exceptions, but works probaly 80% of the time). But a "7.5" of a 2019 seasonal shonen will be a totally different (worse) quality than a "7.5" josei from 2003 that never got the new-release hype on MAL, and is a much less popular genre/market.

MAL scores are helpful (if you know how to 'read' them), just like many other factors like reviews, genre tags, etc. But acting like MAL scores are the only factor that matters is moronic.

Acting like "best MAL score = best anime" is the exact same thing as acting like the highest selling songs = "best music". It only works if you have the most bland, generic taste imaginable.

Holy crap, you and I are actually agreeing on something.

Well, aside from the first sentence. I think most of the stuff I watched has a MAL average of 6 to 7.99.

But I definitely agree that a low rating is more likely to interest me, though for me it's because it just makes it more intriguing to find out what other people didn't like about it.

I think it's stupid to limit yourself to what shows you watch. Not to mention that MAL scores are a joke most of the time. Fight Ippatsu! Juuden-chan!! is sitting at a 6.74 right now and I think that show is amazing. Meanwhile The Promised Neverland is sitting at an 8.60 and I think that's not only the worst show of the season, but one of the worst things I've ever seen in general. If I had limited myself to a certain score limit, I wouldn't have ended up watching Juuden-chan, which I would take any day of the week than a lot of newer highly rated shows.

Surprised by the number of people thinking that the average score of users is high and they don't use the scale to full extent. People do some research before watching anything and are just going to watch stuff that they are likely to enjoy. So a high average rating is expected.

With 7 being good and 8 being very good score. I usually watch anime in between those ratings or higher cause I figure If it's lower it probably isn't that good. Now, I've watched so many anime I'm running out of higher rated anime, but I also work so I don't wanna spend my time watching trash anime, when I decide to watch anime. I love anime btw just not enough to sort through something that thousands to hundreds of thousands of people on average gave a bad score to. Ik people have different tastes, but Is this too high of a score? If so how low of a score are you willing to go? It will help me be more open-minded.

the problem with judging anime by scores is because there are people who right after watching a show give it a 10. Go look at some peoples lists and you'll see they only watch like DBZ etc and give it all a 10. does that make it a 10? No.

I thought the same thing, because unfortunately anime searches are literally based off of what is popular. It depends heavily on what you like to watch. I have watched shows I felt were entertaining, rated 4-6, but weren't typical action/monster of the week/type deal.

When I first started to watch anime, i thought everything was a 10...because everything WAS new and pretty good! Now....I too have ran out of stuff to watch. However, I look at what the story is about, the genres attatched, the score, and the reviews.

If people go "absolute trash boring BLEH" and mindless bashing, I assume they skipped through the 1st-3rd episodes and gave up because it didn't have aspects similar to the LAST show they watched. (because everyone wishes the story could continue)

There's great news. If your cut off was 8, theres a LOT left to watch! Bad news: If you ONLY like a super duper specific plot line, you might need to dig around. Also understand the genre titles aren't exactly how we think of them as. I always assumed supernatural was like animal stuff, (i'm not that dumb) and thought scifi was mecha. It isn't. I still don't like mecha because it is 100% to sell a toy after, so I don't touch that genre (well i look around)

BASICALLY, to give you a concrete number...if it is rated 10 it is probably not THAT good, and if it is rated a 6/7 it is probably super good because people disagree over it. If everyone thinks it is amazing be wary about that because it means that show was advertised like nuts at some point, or has a super toxic fan base.

Also this is all just my opinion. It might be dumb but thought i'd share :)

1 to 3 = crap
4 = so bad it's good
>5,5 mediocre
> 6 average
6 = fine but not something I'd completely recommend
7 = good, but not exactly a genre classic
8 = genre classic
9 = excellent independently of any categorization, even if you are not fan of the genre it belongs to
10 = masterpiece

Then cutoff is at 3 for me.

My caring about mean scores fluctuates. Generally I'll watch whatever catches my attention, bad score or not. However if it's a series that I'm iffy about and it's below 5, I tend not to bother with it. Mean scores don't always reflect the actual quality of the anime. It all depends on your personal preferences. However if it's below 5 that means well over a good portion of half the community watching it didn't enjoy it and if I'm iffy about it to begin with, chances are I won't like it.
