According to MAL, "Tales of Little Women" (Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari) is the prequel to this.
A few characters appear in both anime:
March, Josephine
Brooke, John
March, Margaret

Is it recommended to watch the sequel first or does it not matter since the stories are in different timeperiods?

This and Tales of Little Women are completely different stories. It is possible to watch this without having watched the prequel, but I certainly recommend watching the prequel first because I think it will make this show more enjoyable if you know the characters' background
