Ah, I'm really happy to see this new sense of renewed confidence within the team.

After encountering Fujioka, I think it's important to realize the competition up ahead. Beyond the storytelling, everyone has to find a personal reason to keep running. It's also a brand new year so a new chance to start.

Hino-san's character trying to make them feel better by reasoning of no need to mind other people saying. He aims for the world, not just top of Japan.

Highschool life of Hino-san's character and Toyonaga-san's character. He's been hurting long time.

Local marathon. lol @ the girl helping out with making up the relations between the twin and Toyonaga-san's character and others understand.

Uhhh... That evil smile from the creepy reporter. Paparazzi bringing up main guy's past... And his parents are ashamed about him according to their phone conversation, and thinking he's with bad friends (because of violence).

Christmas party, and New year.

Running order. He said he will be responsible for the result.

Hakone Ekiden starting.

8. King
9. Kakeru
10. Haiji

Haiji might potentially finish his last race under the greatest pain of his life, i'm not ready to see this.

I loved Fujioka's speech about being ''the best'', everyone will think differently of it.

Goosebumps when the starting order was announced and the last moments of the episode.

When they were announcing who will run which section and moments before the race I started getting jitters like I am the one who was going to race there. Give it your all, boys!

Fujioka is such a great guy, example how good sportsman should behave.

Shindo, no! Shit. Running with the fever is hard but possible if he has strong will. Please be alright.

This is Haiji's last race. His leg is certainly gone after this. Make your dreams come true! No regrets.

Nice, the big race is here, from the next preview I can see the race being mixed over several episodes with flash scenes, which I think will be cool.
Also I think lawyer boy told the twins a dirty story, lmfao.

The race order is very important - 1-5 day one, 6-10 day two

01: Prince - Flat, nerves of steel needed due to the pressure.
02: Musa - Two long & steep slopes, usually the fastest runner is picked, hence Musa's suprise.
03: Joji - Strong sea winds, but also the most supporters in this section, so Joji will be happy.
04: Jota - Many slopes make it difficult to keep pace. Joji got the best section of the twins.
05: Shindo - The longest, steepest & hardest, so mountain boy was the best pick. Let's hope the ill scene wasn't before the race.
06: Yuki - Downward slopes which are hard on runner legs, hence Haiji mentioning his balance.
07: Nico - The record of this section is the oldest....Haiji that joke's mean.
08: King - This section is mainly flat, except for a difficult slope called the Yugyōji-no-saka.
09: Kakeru - Longest in second day, with many downs, places change a lot in this section, probably why Haiji is going with the fastest runner.
10: Haiji - Flat so good for his leg, but with tall building winds, this one is gonna be tense.

Fujioka is a nice dude :)

Hajis selection reminded me that they're not running individually, but as an unit. The whole scene was just awesome and I was thinking "Now this is how you build up tension". Bring it on, I'm so pumped.

cliffhangers are bad for my health, tho*flips the table*

It's finally happening, Hakone is here.

We finally got a glimpse at Haiji's past thanks to Fujioka, and though I wanted more I still appreciated that scene. Fujioka is a really strong guy like they say, he seems to have his answer for running. I loved to hear what he had to say about what those clueless fools said.

In other news that creepy reporter is still hanging around the Kansei team, and he is most certainly the one who published that article. I'm glad that it didn't do them any serious damage. I think. And I loved the buildup to Hakone, with Haiji telling them which sections each of them would run. I'm so pumped that I feel like I'm the one running. lol

But I'm a bit worried about Haiji's X-ray. It was just a split second and I'm no specialist so I couldn't get much from it. I'm also worried about those last overlapping moments. It seems that Shindo, and Yuki aren't in the race yet, Shindo is with a fever or something. I'm a bit anxious.

Right at the end it showed him really REALLY ill right before the race. It made it look like he might not be able to run which would obviously mean they'd have to forfeit

From what the big guy said about winning, I am guessing our team won't win, but everyone will be satisfied.

Just when I thought we'd get to see Haiji's past, it was actually the big guy's past.

They always say: "Hakone no yama wa?" "Tenka no ken!" (Unless I heard it wrong). I wonder what that's supposed to mean. Does anyone know the kanji used for "ken" in this sentence?

Haiji's x-rays didn't look good. His expression looked worse. I am seriously quite worried about him.

Kakeru got into some trouble and we found out about his family as well. Wonder how this will all play a part in the story later.

The time for the race is finally here. Even I am nervous.

The one who's sick is Sugiyama, right? He definitely ended up over-working himself. I wonder what will happen to the race.

Incredible episode.

Fujioka is a good guy. :)
I really liked what he had to say about winning and what it means to be the best.

The soundtrack is just so phenomenal, the way it's used to add so much flavor to each scene is just incredible. It makes the show so compelling.
The starting order announcement made me get chills, so awesome.

Wonder if Fujioka will run leg 9 or 10.
Damn, that cliffhanger. I am so not ready to witness what's gonna happen.

I assumed Kakeru would have been last, but at the same time feared that Haiji would himself last. And thats what happened. I feel like that is only foreshadowing the tragic ending to come.

Im also surprised they are already starting he race. 5 full episodes of Hakone. However telling from the preview, it also looks like the story telling from here on wont be linear; so that would give a break from watching 5 straight episodes of solid running.

The hakone no yama wa tenka no ken is actually from a children song titled mount hakone. Here`s the first part of the lyrics

箱根の山は 天下の険 (Hakone no yama wa tenka no ken)
The Hakone Mountains are the steepest place in the world
函谷関も 物ならず (hako tani kan mo mononarazu)
More so than Kankokukan* - there's no comparison.
万丈の山 千仞の谷 (banjou no yama sen jin no tani)
Very high mountains with a bottomless ravine**

Notes:
*Kankokukan [Han-Gu-Guan] is a Chinese place name that was very hard to pass through.
**This part is an exaggerated expression.

Hope that helps. ^^

Another good chapter as always. What a thrill!. Although it is a pity about Shindo, so much that he worked hard for others. I will be looking forward to the next chapter to see the development of this great career. PS: I think this anime is one of the best OST (Soundtracks).

What an awful moment to get sick, Shindo. I really hope he doesn't die while running. Without a doubt, it will be really hard for him to do his section. And not to mention that he'll be running in the steepest one of the race. But well, now let's see how strong his determination will be.

It was a great build up episode. The moment when Haiji started naming the ones who would run every section got me really excited and as many people have said here, I felt like I was the one who would run instead of them. Such a nice moment.

Can't wait for the next episode!

Awesome stuff. They managed to make reading off a list of names feel so epic. The ost as it was panning around to everyone getting ready at their sections was great.

Really didn't expect the race to start here tho. They keep blue ballsing us about Haiji friggin leg. Like we got a little of a flashback this ep but it barely told us anything. We had last episode end with Haiji going to the doctor again and he was still there at the beginning of this episode, but we weren't told anything. I still feel like that has to come up. I was hoping before the race.

Pretty lame that Shindo got sick right before the race. I thought this last episode when the red haired dude mentioned someone getting sick, but I figured they would avoid that trope since Haiji's leg is gonna mess them up at some point. Apparently I'm wrong. I really hope he gets better in time. The timeline was jumping around a bit towards the end and I feel it may do the same next episode so not sure how long Shindo has to recover.

Tell me about it. I hate the "getting sick before an important moment" trope that's so often seen in animes about sports and other similarly competitive activities (fairly sure I've seen it a ton of times in acting/movie industry animes too).
Like I'm not even worried about Shindo's sickness cuz I'm too angry about it existing in the first place.

PS: Other than that, good episode. The whole scene with Prince waiting for the start of the race was pretty exciting.

i suppose fujioka tells now straight-forwardly the thing that foreshadows the future change in japanese mentality: winning is not everything
our boys are gonna run ;__;
shindo's story tells the old truth: trying to manage everything single-handedly is harmful and never actually efficient. while the change in mentality is about to come, over-working is still a big issue. first one was our boy haiji, now it's the mountain boy. hope haiji is not gonna sacrifice his leg or something ...

Yay! Now I no longer believed that I would see Ekiden start before the anime series ended, I am very happy. A very engaging episode, then the final gave me even more expectations than I already had. A bit disappointed the writer went for the Japanese Cold meme, especially given it's literally what Red-Shinji told them the episode before.

Well, looks like Shindou is not feeling as well as she pretends to be, although I'm still even more worried about Haiji's leg. Which is probably why he made himself the 10th runner, so that everyone else could still run even if something should happen to him.
