Indeed it does. It's pretty much all exposition so there might be a sequel if it doesn't turn out to be a flop

I'm honestly surprised the movie doesn't suck. I was literally in the cinema- waiting with my giant vertical pitchfork (IE the Reddit page) ready to tear the movie a new hole when I realised it was good. Kinda boring (considering how it's mostly just a remake of the OVA) but fun

Good the movie didn't blow it like certain others based on manga.

If I am looking to buy the deluxe version, can I skip to the 2nd one (2 of 5) having seen the movie, or is the first volume worth buying?

No, I strongly recommand starting from the beginning. The movie ruined the characterisation and the atmosphere of the original as far as I'm concerned, and there was a couple of changes in the backstories. Plus, the first volumes are the best ones imo. But the whole series (before Last Order) is amazing and well worth owning.
