I've been interested in watching this film since a friend of mine told me it's one of the best anime film he's seen, but then I found that it's a spin off of the series Hibike Euphonium. Do I need to watch that before I watch this?

It does reference a background event to the main duo that happened in the TV series but to be honest I personally think taking that into factor actually leads to a plot hole for the film s main theme so I'd argue you'd actually be better off not having watched the TV series.

However, the appearance of certain side characters may seem random. They're not explicitly introduced so you may wonder at their sudden significance at times.

I watched this movie then became interested in Hibike! Euphonium, so I watched it...I think it's ok, don't need to watch "which" first

Yeah, this movie is gorgeous and wonderful even though I haven't seen Hibike.

The ones hating this anime are MOSTLY SJWs, yaoifags and Narutards. LUCKILY I'M NOT ONE OF THOSE DAMN SJWS, YAOIFAGS AND NARUTARDS bashing the show for being "too edgy" and "too un-PC".

I feel you would benefit and enjoy it more if you watch both tv series first.

I'd like to +1 the side that says that "watch the series" before this one.

While I agree that you don't strictly need it, I feel that I was leagues better of having seen the series than if I hadn't. To me, the entire point of the movie was a journey between point A and point B; where the girls are coming from and where they ended up being.

We were formally told point A, then shown the rest, but I think you will have a much better understanding and empathy towards the characters, if you not only know about, but have already seen their previous story.

I mean, sure, you can watch emotional movies plainly as information ("what will happen?"), then it's the same, but then, what's the point? :)

Huh. I didn't notice any plotholes. How's your reasoning? In spoiler tags, ofc. :)

The main theme of the film is that Liz has grown too attached to the Blue Bird to the extent that she doesn't want her to leave even though the Blue Bird needs to:

Although the movie can be watched without prior Hibike! Euphonium experience chances are if you like the movie that you'll be wanting to watch the series. In that case it would've been better to have started with the series from the get-go as the movie has a few spoilers (like the identity of the new club president and vice president minor as that may be).

The bigger issue is having prior knowledge of the history between Mizore and Nozomi before watching season 2 of the series. Watching the movie first totally spoils the first few episodes of season 2. Thus, any suspense for what is one of the best mini-arcs of the series is totally ruined.

So, sure the movie can be watched by itself but you're potentially spoiling the first arc of season 2 unless you know for sure that franchise-wise you're only in it for the movie.
