Oh man Detroit Metal City was darker than expected it has some really weird and disturbing scenes xDD

I didn't watch the anime of Berserk until I had previously read the manga so I didn't count it :p

Obligatory Berserk response, because cmon man, it’s shocking and well drawn on top of it. The animated arcs (excluding the fucking cgi shitshow that was berserk 2016) just add on top of it. It’s well done also, which is why it’s respected by many people including me.

I’d also like to mention Perfect Blue, Devilman Crybaby, Evangelion, Elfen Lied, Higurashi, and from the scenes ive seen from corpse party I have an idea about how dark that series is.

I mean, I haven't watched any anime where said 'dark' topics disturbed me. But I would probably say something like NG Evangelion really surprised me. I would say TG torture arc, but that doesn't define the whole anime. It was a dark arc though, but very enjoyable.

Yahll don't know shit until you've seen Shigurui: Death Frenzy. I mean look at that tile. It has death frenzy in its fuckin title. And if you want to continue the darkness to its end in the manga it gets hella fucked. The animation quality is really realistic so it makes it all the more gruesome.

Yeah, that anime is pretty crazy but good.

Yeah, hunterxhunter might of started off as a shounen but definitely ended as a seinen. Plus I heard the Dark Continent arc in the manga it gets really dark.

Surprisingly, nothing comes to mind. I've seen plenty anime that could be described as mature, edgy, shocking...

But anime is just anime for me. Nothing is really unsettling.

A lot of dark anime which I've seen were mentioned above.

For me a dark show is something that goes beyond gore, it's something that fucks your soul.

Shows like "now and then, here and there", Bokurano and Devilman crybaby were one of the most depresive shows.

Of course Berserk is also one of them, but everyone knows about it.

The fake is of far greater value. In its deliberate attempt to be real, it's more real than the real thing.

Texhnolyze, easily. Absolutely crushingly hopeless.
TEN COMMANDMENTS:
1) If Evangelion and Psycho-Pass are his only 10s, he probably also worships Tool and smells like cheesy puffs 2) Freudian psychosis =/= good writing 3) Moe blob art style is only ok in pure slice-of-life comedy 4) It's ok to enjoy shounen. Having fun is allowed 5) It is not ok to enjoy isekai (jk, it is, I just fucking hate it) 6) Creator breakdown =/= good writing 7) A story does not have to be wrapped up with a bow. Life is messy, why would a good story need to be tidy? 8) InuYasha is proto-Twilight 9) Ecchi CAN be good, but is almost always an abomination 10) If God is real, They allowed Super Kid to happen, so fuck Them

konosuba is pretty dark

Kazuma gets decapitated and they talk about it in great detail. If people say goblin slayer had a rape scene and is dark then konosuba had decapitation and is even darker cause in goblin slayer they didn't talk about it much or show anything but in konosuba they talked about it in detail

lots of music -

You should watch Utena if you’re listing Madoka. Madoka Magica is actually fairly idealistic despite its darkness. Utena is cynical on top of being dark: Madoka Magica has a bleak world that can actually be fixed. Utena’s world cannot be fixed (strictly speaking), and the antagonist hits a level of depravity and force of character that could only be topped by the likes of Johan... and well, saying anything more would spoil.

Go watch Utena. Seriously.

Utena is definetely high on my list, though the only thing that somewhat dissuades me is the large number of episodes. How is its pacing? Is its drama genuine in most parts, or too forced? Also, are there action scenes? What about romance, including yuri romance?

Sorry for the flood of questions, I was always a bit confused on what Utena feels like or is similar to.

Sorry I didn’t reply sooner. Your quote got messed up, so I never got a notification.

The pacing is decent. The only arc that felt a bit a slow was the Black Rose arc; if you feel like it drags a bit there, I would say to hold out. Also, since you mention pacing, there are two recap episodes that aren’t actually skippable because they also contain new content throughout. The second one in particular actually ends up being one of the most important episodes in the show once you understand the framing.

The drama is pretty goood, though you’ll be dealing more with mystery as a basic appeal since Utena’s motivations are pretty straightforward. Discovering what the “revolution” is, Anthy’s true nature, the secret of the castle in the sky, and who Dios actually is are big appeal factors that are handled well. The combat can be interesting occasionally, but it’s definitely not what you should be watching the show for since certain action animations are actually recycled a number of times.

There is a canon lesbian character in the recurring cast, but no sexual activity is shown on her part. A couple of the guys are heavily implied to be bisexual as well. “Romance”... uh, well, that’s unfortunately part of what makes the series dark, for multiple reasons. I’ll leave it there.

What it “feels like” is a bit harder to describe. Utena goes to a “normal” school, yet there’s a lot of eerie fantasy type stuff going on as well that makes it hard to convey the atmosphere in words.

It’s well worth watching. Don’t let the length dissuade you.

Gantz
Phantom

But for the darkest, I think I'm gonna have to pick School Days. This one you have a bad feeling which is growing bigger and bigger as you are advancing througout the serie, and its getting darker and darker.

And the ending... Clearly one of the darkest I've ever seen, and one of the most surprising too. For me, at least ^^

the problem with "dark anime" is that it's unrealistic, thus not having any shock factor for me whatsoever.

That being said, I'm going to have to go with a manga, Emergence.

Re:Zero was the darkest anime I ever watched. The tone was extremely serious throughout as you were forced to witness Subaru's numerous deaths and failings. That particular episode where he returned to the mansion and found everyone dead, truly chilling.

Let us also not forget Beezlebub, he was twisted... the way he murdered Rem was brutal and sickening.

It was the first dark anime I ever watched, and it put me off it for a while!

Re:Zero is legitimately the reason why I don't watch shows where likeable characters have a chance of dying...

Also, because someone said "KonoSuba is like Re:Zero, but funny", I marathoned it instantly and it's one of my favourite anime ever
