Not so long as it doesn't get in the way of story, characters or tone.

Some anime, like Kill la Kill thrived off its fanservice. Tbh it wouldn't have even been the same anime without it. But that's only because the story, characters, themes, etc where all created with fanservice in mind. If it's out of character, completely goes against the tone of the show, or otherwise breaks immersion then it becomes and issue for me.

And like... I wouldn't say it ruins your average ecchi harem show. But I don't usually watch those kinds of anime. Since in the case of most shows like this, the fanservice doesn't get in the way of the story/characters, but rather, is generally more important than the story/characters which seem like an after thought to all the borderline porn. Which is fine, and certainly exists for a reason. It wouldn't be a thing if there wasn't a demand for it. But when I sit down to watch a show, I'm not looking for masturbation fuel, so y'know.

Depends on the show and how explicit it is. To Love-ru's probably my favorite ecchi harem anime because of how raunchy and stupid it is. The fanservice doesn't bother me at all because I cannot take the show seriously at all to begin with and every character is attractive as hell which makes me wanna see them naked. It's a good time.

So true. It had a good premise, good characters but the ecchi… so horrible.

Just because a show has ecchi scenes doesn't automatically make me dislike it, however most ecchi shows offer nothing besides the eyecandy which is why I give most ecchi shows a low rating. two of my favorite comedy manga/anime have a shit lot of ecchi scenes, but I still loved them.

Depends, there are anime that use ecchi as a well fitting element in the show and then there are those that try to seem serious and mature but then manage to make it seem like an ecchi comedy in the wrong moment and ruin the tone that they have tried to build up and in most of those animes the characters end up becoming bland and get shitty characterization

I dropped Tasogare Otome x Amnesia for exactly this

Only when it's really obnoxious and not-my-fetish which doesn't happen all that often:

Eiken
Queen's Blade
Quasar of Stigma

Otherwise, I find fanservice enjoyable/funny.

most ecchi does ecchi for the purpose of ecchi and little else, but when it just has ecchi but the rest of it is actually good (characters, relationships, plot, etc) then it's not a big deal and more of a bonus

I used to be totally okay with that when I was a kid, but nowadays it annoys the hell out of me. It's like, whenever the writers can't come up with a decent plot they are like "Yeah, make a panty shot, that's right!" and I'm sitting there like "So lazy." *Eyeroll*
I don't particularly mind nudity, that to be said. I just feel like it should be justified, and not the same 5 generic ecchi cliches that we are given every time.

Bottomline - Ecchi is for when the writers think we are stupid enough to buy it. Sometimes I do, most of the time not so much.

Both of those would be unwatchable without tits.

Let me tell you what ruins an anime for me...Strong and independent women becoming weak, ordinary and totally dependand of the Emiyas/Kiritos of the world, yeah that happens a lot actually...and it wouldn't matter as much if the Male character was actually cool and strong, like Guts, but Rin..weaker than Emiya? c'mon!

- You're right... if highschool of the dead doesnt contain echi, that anime would be great anime
- about the reason they'll never do a sequel because the author of the manga is already dead

- Not really, i know the consequence by watching an anime that contain echi genre in it.

Depending on how it is handled it lowers the value of a series in my eyes. If it degrades it characters to only sexual objects then what should I expect from it? If it is just there for some eye candy here and there I doin't mind.

There are animés who focus on that genre like Golden Boy, which is geniunly funny. But you also have series which have NOTHING to do with ecchi yet use elements of it everywhere, it's very annoying and outright disrespectful towards the viewer and the respective gender.

Anime as a whole? No. Some shows? Yes. There really isn't any escaping ecchi in anime and a lot of people actually look for ecchi in their shows, but there have been some instances where ecchi and fanservice have been thrown into a show just for the hell of it. If it's not an ecchi show than I don't think that ecchi belongs in it. I myself am not really bothered by ecchi, but I know that many people are very against it and won't watch some great shows due to a few questionable scenes popping up randomly throughout a show.

An example would be how many people don't watch BNHA/MHA due to the design of many of the female characters and the fanservice that is mostly present during season 1.

In conclusion, ecchi won't ruin an anime for me, but it definitely can for many, limiting the fanbase of a show and deterring others from watching otherwise great anime.

No, so far it hasn't ruined any series for me. I'll admit that Kill la Kill felt rather uncomfortable to watch at first (then I realised KlK was labeled as "ecchi").

I think it would be bothersome if the fanservice somehow ruins the flow of the scene. Otherwise, I see no problem with it.

I really enjoyed Chobits, but definitely find the fanservice in the early half a bit grating at times. Especially the infamous 'Pantsu' episode which is very skippable. After episode 14-15 the show really takes off in terms of more dramatic plotting and the humour, especially the ecchi bits tend to recede as supporting players start to reveal more about Human/Persocom relations and relate it to Hideki and Chi's situation.

not really. I like art of eros. Rarely ecchi bothers me in Anime. Rare occasion where fanservice/ecchi annoyed me was HOTD. Probably reason would be that I expected more violent and gory action zombie Anime, thus heavy fanservice element was kinda disappointment. Plus the style of fanservice there was not my cup of tea.

Aside that.. I usually really enjoy fanservice/ecchi. Anime can be done well with or without it.

Not gonna lie, I used to talk some shit about Highschool of the Dead for the Matrix titties scene a few years back, so I can't entirely begrudge people for listing it even if Queen's Blade (at least season 1) is my front runner for being a poor man's Ikkitousen in that QB has a bad martial arts action to ecchi ratio. But apparently season 2 makes up for that, so I'll give the series the benefit of the doubt in that it might have some redeeming qualities.

Eiken however, I still stand by my seven-year-old review (no advertising intended) in that an hour of over-the-top early 2000's style ecchi is amusing at best and just fine at worst, but making that into a longer OVA or a 13 episode series would have been overbearing since the humor would repeat itself too often. I see it as a campy comedic romp. Others don't. That's fine.

Other than that, fuck harems.

As long if it’s not too distracting then it’s fine, but a good amount of ecchis have that problem where the suggestive themes become too much with no sense of purpose.

If the ecchi scenes add something on the plot/experience, I'm ok with that.
But, if instead, it is pointless, i'd rather watch another thing. If I wanted tits bouncing on the screen, I would watch hentai, not regular anime.
