The December 2020 issue of Gessan magazine announced on Monday that Q Hayashida's adventure fantasy manga Dorohedoro manga series will get a TV anime.

Synopsis
Hole—a dark, decrepit, and disorderly district where the strong prey on the weak and death is an ordinary occurrence—is all but befitting of the name given to it. A realm separated from law and ethics, it is a testing ground to the magic users who dominate it. As a race occupying the highest rungs of their society, the magic users think of the denizens of Hole as no more than insects. Murdered, mutilated, and made experiments without a second thought, the powerless Hole dwellers litter the halls of Hole's hospital on a daily basis.

Possessing free access to and from the cesspool, and with little challenge to their authority, the magic users appear indomitable to most—aside for a few. Kaiman, more reptile than man, is one such individual. He hunts them on a heedless quest for answers with only a trusted pair of bayonets and his immunity to magic. Cursed by his appearance and tormented by nightmares, magic users are his only clue to restoring his life to normal. With his biggest obstacle being his stomach, his female companion Nikaidou, who runs the restaurant Hungry Bug, is his greatest ally.

Set in a gritty world of hellish design, Dorohedoro manages a healthy blend of comedy and lightheartedness with death and carnage. Taking plenty of twists and turns while following the lives of Hole's residents, it weaves a unique world of unearthly origin and dreary appearance not for the squeamish or easily disturbed. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Dorohedoro originally began serialization in monthly Ikki magazine in 2000 before transferring to HiBaNa in 2015 due to the former discontinuing its serialization. The manga then switched to Gessan when HiBaNa ceased publishing last August and concluded in the magazine's October issue on September 12. Shogakukan published the 23rd and final volume, as well as an expended special volume, Dorohedoro All Star Mekan Kanzenban, on November 12.

VIZ Media began publishing the manga digitally on the SigIkki website in 2009, the former online English version of Ikki magazine. Physical volumes have been published under the distributor's VIZ Signature imprint since 2010, with the 22nd volume released on May 15.

Kinda skeptical about this. Can't think of a single studio that'd be able to animate something as crazily detailed as Dorohedoro.
I hate to say it but this will probably be a generic 3D anime.

The anime has low chances of being good. Art is too complex and crude-like to translate properly into animation. The series is 23 volumes long and would need around 50 episodes for a proper adaptation. But considering Dorohedoro's niche appeal, that's unlikely. Either a one-cour, incomplete anime or two-cour max, rushing through all the volumes. The manga is insanely brutal and gory, and there's no way a TV anime can give justice to the violence in the manga. After all, the gore is one of Dorohedoro's main appeal since it adds to much more to the madness of its content.

At the same time, I'm happy this exists because it can boost manga sales and give exposure to Dorohedoro in the west. After all, Dorohedoro's content will appeal to a western audience much more than a Japanese audience. Unless if that Japanese audience really loves gyoza.

I really hope they get a talented staff and high quality studio for this. The art style of the manga is unique and it's hard to capture the magic of the source. There's also plenty chapters so I hope it gets at least a 2-cour.

Will have to see.

Horror and comedy is a rare mix, so I'll be sure to check this one out.

On the one hand, unexpected and amazing news since this adaption was always extremely unlikely.

On the other hand... this better have excellent staff or else it will be a huge debacle.

The plot sounds interesting enough, willing to give it a try.
Here's hoping we get a full adaptation since the source has ended.

Had the same thought myself.

You're never too old to watch anime.
If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime.

Like I said on the manga subforum:

I'm in the middle of reading it right now, so this is quite the funny coincidence. Anyway, there's almost no way that this is going to be any good. Really can't see an anime adaption working...

But the manga is great, more people should check it out.

I don't know how far they will get with the anime but im excited. Ill keep my hype low because I really love this series and the artist style might be hard to encapsulate. also the fighting scene... even so, it can get more fan so im all about it.

God DAYUM <3 Im supper hyped since this is definitely my fav manga right next to the Berserk... But...

Thats what im afraid about... Just like Berserk, this manga has one of the most complex art styles... And i fear that it will have the same treatment as Berserk...

But... I have my hopes up... If they make this good, follow the manga, and make it look good... Oh god... One of my greatest wishes on this planet will come true <3
