They are not the same, definitely.
Then again, I think it depends on what you define as "loli", because to me "loli" is "sexualized underage". If you simply mean cute underage or underage-looking character then for sure that would include a lot more, but there are very different implications if you use the word one way or the other. And many shows of the like have characters in their 15s-17s, not little girls. Using the term "lolis" for mid to late teens doesn't sit well with me, since it's associated to prepubescent characters mostly, due to where the term comes from.
Fanservice? Depends. Some have some don't. Some have a couple shots here and there, some have absolutely none and some have plenty of. I don't think it's a defining trait of these kinds of shows, it depends on a case by case and also how they are adapted. There doesn't seem to be a clear correlation between the amount of fanservice and whether the author is a man or a woman either. So yeah, basically, case by case.
As for "yuri bait"... I think this term is a bit problematic. A lot of these shows have plenty of subtext, but one can't act like there is not a pushing force against confirming same-sex relationships outside of their assigned genres in the medium. It's not only rare in these shows, it's overall rare. People talk about subtext as if it's some kind of fetishization when often it's a way to insert and/or suggest romantic codes in a narrative that otherwise would not allow this kind of representation. You can't certainly make a case for everything and of course some shows may intend to fetishize and bait, but the term is overused (there's nothing fetishized about the subtext of Yuru Camp, for instance), and often also misused because same-sex romance also happens to be under much stricter scrutiny by the viewers. A while ago I was talking about this regarding Yuri on Ice!!!, for instance.
Even so, this season's Anima Yell! had a character coming out, and that was clear and explicit, in episode 3. Comic Girls earlier this year had one of the main characters confessing that she had a crush for another girl and even arranging a date with her. |
