Another decent volume. Ending felt semi-open, but it's not like I expected main character to save the world of manga or anything, that definitely wouldn't feel realistic or satisfying either. There is some hope for the future, but it's left for other authors to decide whether and how they'll fight the system.

My only problem with this short series is that this story is set in a very close future, and I'm really doubtful that law enforcing censorship in such a huge scale could be created anytime soon. I can imagine government trying to enforce something like that, but in this manga most people seem to be totally cool with that, like most of them (excluding people in the business, like mangakas or editors) don't care about part of their freedom being taken away. I'm sure SOME people wouldn't care, hell, I'm sure there are people who'd love to censor or get rid of "harmful" stories, but what about rest of the readers? And the rest of the world? I'm convinced there would be all kinds of protests going on.

Maybe it's just me, but I really can't believe something like that could happen so soon, especially with Internet being such an important part of our lives. Maybe if Poison City was set 15-20 more years in the future I'd be more willing to buy it?

I really enjoyed how MC's manga corresponded with the plot of the main story though!
And I still can't believe I just bought manga series with characters wearing gas masks on the covers, and somehow it turned out to be a story about mangaka fighting the unjust system of strict censorship. What the heck? 7.5/10

In fact, you've just probably missed it, but the author created this story because his previous manga (manhole) got censored with obscure reasons in Japan.

I think the ending was meant to be a metacommentary on censorship in general in Japan. Of course, censorship wouldn't be as bad as it is depicted in the manga. But that doesn't mean media, in general, gets banned or censored for no good reasons.

When he did allude to the Comics Code Authority, I think while it is a bit much, there's certainly some truth to it. Animation and comics in America and the West in general, especially at the higher end, have not been able to branch out into a wealth and depth of stories like Japanese comic because of heavy censorship. The CCA was later than other censorship authorities in Western Europe that drove the comic scene into niche and childish territory, beyond risqué, stepping into pornographic territory, because anything in between will be deemed problematic to published, so either the author leaves morality behind or full adhere to it. My problem is, the sexiness of a medium usually lies in between, where simple moral still holds in a story full of sexy lady and macho man. Just take a look at video games like MGS, going on and on about effect of war and PTSD, yet the PTSD victims dressed in tight body suit. I think that's quite ridiculous, failing to deliver on any of the supposed message because of the tonal dissonance. However, I would hate to have it any other way, because that's how we get to know the creator, Kojima, a man capable of building emotion for his story, but also easily distracted by pretty women and macho action men. I would especially hate it if some censorship authority comes down and ban the game from the shelf because of scantily cladded women. People have a range of emotion, and comic book should be allowed to express that. The "SJW" comics of recent time have came under criticism and scrutiny, but I also think of those authors as victims. There's certainly a market for self-insert or even self-critical stories, such as Princess Jellyfish and other Higashimura's works who are clearly very sympathetic to "that" type of crowd, yet still garner a sizeable readership without being forced to add "superheroes" into them. In term of video games, games such as "Gone Home" or god forbid had very specific message for specific audience that the author was trying to convey, they can exist as a walking simulator, not needed to be turned into an action game. That's why we want more freedom and variety. The censorship code disallowed variety in the comic world, and diminish interest in general to the industry. In turn, it turned the industry into 2, the underground and the mainstream. In Japanese comics, animation and video games, we have a range of products from small indie games, one man projects to triple A with budget the size of movies put into it. They have variety of audience and theme. Comic book fall behind because the code failed to foster the creators. I remember when French and Belgian comics were experimental, trying to break the mould, be risqué. Those works are now largely underground, written primarily for passion. I am glad Patreon exists, but a big problem with crowdfunding is that it rewards less risk and more generic works. Publishing house still needs to exist to procure comics, preventing situations like web comic and web novels, which are plagued with popular copycats, low effort comics with premature ideas, written to garner readership rather than elaborate thoughts and experience.
