Chronological works, anime titles only: https://www.anime-planet.com/people/go-sakabe
Full list of releases: https://vgmdb.net/artist/10302

I originally wrote this last month and shelved it unfinished. With Go Sakabe just this weekend confirmed to be returning to score Date A Live III, it's a good time to post it. His work on the first season's OP and soundtrack grabbed my attention, and I quickly found what became my current favorite Japanese song. From the Anime Songs thread:

nDroae said:
Resuscitated Hope (Gosick ED)
Composed/arranged by Go Sakabe, lyrics by Shio Watanabe, performed by Lisa Komine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jusOxwAT3T8

I discovered this when I looked into Go Sakabe, after being impressed by his work on Date A Live. I listened to it hundreds of times before finally watching Gosick in 2016. Aside from the epilogue, my favorite part of the show was an escape sequence that used the instrumental version as score. This song intersects all my ideals: pop-gothic symphonic rock, soft and strong female vocals, and lyrics that combine a palatable dose of emo with affirmations of the lovers' determination to strive toward a better life together. I used to say on Lastfm that in my most ideal songs, music and lyrics work together perfectly; this melody supports the text every step of the way. Oh how I wish for soothing rain that Go Sakabe had also been picked to compose the show score, so that I'd have more variations on this tune!

Thinking about Lisa Komine's voice, the word "rich" comes to mind. I bought two of her other CDs because of this song. Unfortunately she never recorded much beside a few anisongs, she hasn't performed in any anime since 2011, and her last music release of any kind was ここにいるから in 2013, which is out of print. Looking at her Twitter, she's clearly still performing, so perhaps someday she'll record more.

After that, along with fellow fan @_NTx, for a while I actively followed his career by watching everything he worked on.

Currently my all time top played track is "Yell for Tomorrow" from Super Sonico The Animation, but I can't seem to find it playable online, so nevermind that!

Today I learned: http://blog.animeinstrumentality.net/2016/04/undefeated-bahamut-chronicle-soundtrack-review/#comment-32215
[Toshihiko] Sahashi doesn’t really take on a lot of new work these days, mostly composing for series he has previously worked on.

By the way: another “new” composer, Go Sakabe, actually studied under and worked as an assistant to Sahashi and it definitely shows in his work on the Date A Live series. It’s worth checking out because he might end up being the new Sahashi, for better or for worse.

I am unfamiliar with Toshihiko Sahashi, with two exceptions so far: one is The Big O (Stand a Chance!), and the other is Full Metal Panic Fumoffu / The Second Raid, of which I listened to the soundtracks earlier this year, despite not having seen the latter. The final track of The Second Raid, 勝利 / Shouri / Victory, has been one of my favorite tracks this year. I don't think I ever even realized the composer was the same at The Big O, but listening to both tracks now, the similarity is obvious right away in the percussion. Very cool. I can't comment on any connection to Go Sakabe's work, though.

Some posts from Go Sakabe's page on MAL: https://myanimelist.net/people/21815/Go_Sakabe

I like his work in Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji. Completely begetting of a funny, yet sweet school romance.
Simple, catchy, nostalgic and perfectly fitting.
:) I love that story!

@MakiMakio | Dec 7, 2015 7:23 PM
That main theme for Seiken Tsukai no World Break...simply stunning. Prime example of how a great OST can elevate a not terribly remarkable anime to a whole other level. More please.

@nDroae | Feb 27, 2016 7:32 PM
Godlike Sakabe. Date A Live (song) and Resuscitated Hope were instant favorites. He's even made me want to watch SoniAni. Give some of Sawano's gigs to this man instead. I explained elsewhere: "I think [Sawano would] benefit from tackling less projects with more care."

@3xTripple | Dec 21, 2016 3:16 PM
His OSTs are really great! As a composer, I'm able to hear similarities in people's music styles. While watching Cheating Craft, I thought that the music sounded as good as the music in Seiken Tsukai no World Break and then I just found out it was the same composer! I'd love to see his works in more anime!

@Mayuka | Jan 11, 2017 2:33 AM
Great job with Magic Kyun's OST! I especially like that all the songs are named after real flowers.

I've been unable to find more than a few short cues from Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji / Wolf Girl & Black Prince, and for a while I was planning to watch the anime to hear it, but at this point I'm not sure when I'll finally get to it.

Kamen Rider Ghost Wordpile
Hey, it's October, this fits.

I've been wanting to watch Kamen Rider since I was introduced to it by the Super Best Friends, mainly "Black Otaku Council" leader Woolie; here he is visiting "KAMEN RIDER THE DINER" in Ikebukuro: https://youtu.be/xz10t_gNrnI?t=2m57s

I will watch Ghost eventually because I dig Go Sakabe's score, but before that I'll go through a proper introduction with some of the classic riders. And before that, there's still a lot of high-priority old anime I want to watch first, which will be by focus in 2019.

Kamen Rider Ghost OST:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaAIyv7rB-gv8HkWymzccDMiCD42tFb-C

After the opening track 天空寺タケル テーマ / Theme of Takeru Tenkuuji, which makes pretty standard use of traditional Japanese instruments (wagakki), the first disc is explicitly divided into four sets: one for each of the show's three main riders, and one for the Ganma/Gamma enemies.

Tracks 2-10: Kamen Rider Ghost (仮面ライダーゴースト)
Upbeat, energetic wagakki-rock themes which seem ideal for a children's action show. My favorite is track #7, 仮面ライダーゴースト 闘魂 / Kamen Rider Ghost ~ Toucon (Fighting Spirit).

Tracks 11-15: Kamen Rider Specter (仮面ライダースペクター)
Mainly just rock without added elements. I've given each five listens over the last two years, but nothing really stands out.

Tracks 16-20: Kamen Rider Necrom (仮面ライダーネクロム)
These are the most heavily electronic themes. The incessantly loud, serious #16 仮面ライダーネクロム テーマ / Theme of Kamen Rider Necrom makes Necrom's introduction (I mean on this OST, not in the show) the most attention-grabbing moment every time I listen to the score. Also a standout is #17 仮面ライダーネクロム 心の叫びを聞け! / Kamen Rider Necrom ~ Hear the Cry of My Heart!, which keeps the heavy electronics, but is upbeat like Ghost's themes.

Tracks 21-27: Gamma "(眼魔 Ganma, lit. 'Eye Devils')" https://kamenrider.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Gamma
Several of these share the electronic sounds of Necrom. Favorite #25 is dark and gothy with synth choir: 眼魔 完璧なる世界 / Ganma ~ Utopia.

The traditional instruments are more prevalent on disc 2. Track #4 失意〜仲間 / Heartbreak ~ Friends reprises the theme from the first disc's opener. Mournful in the first part (Heartbreak), then positive in the second (Friends).

And a final pick: nice solo violin on track #9, 大帝アドニス 光〜闇 / Emperor Adonis ~ Light / Darkness. I'm getting a bit of Old Grandeur feeling from the first half (Emperor Adonis).

Soundtrack to the movie, "Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive: Super Movie War Genesis":
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaAIyv7rB-gubvljqPA_9_72XjtUWTwhy

Two other composers also worked on this, but there are some nice new versions of Ghost cues on it. I'd like to hear the other Ghost OSTs.

_NTx first got in contact with me after I posted on Go Sakabe's MAL page, asking whether his Digimon Tri soundtracks would get a release:
_NTx | Mar 2, 2016 3:23 PM
Nice to see another Go Sakabe fan :) Unfortunately, there's not release date for Digimon Tri (his original themes were great, but i find the remixes of arisawa's themes pretty underwhelming :/).

I've never seen any Digimon, but I decided to wait and watch from the begining (probably in 2020) rather than skip to Tri.

Here's the rest of our Sakabe-related conversations:

_NTx | May 15, 2016 9:46 PM
Go Sakabe confirmed for Hatsukoi Monster. As usual, it goes directly to my PTW list just for him :3

nDroae | May 15, 2016 9:55 PM
Thank you for the notification! :D I see the manga only has a 6.76, but I hope he composes something heartwarming like the SoniAni theme :)

nDroae | Jul 11, 2016 6:54 PM
I watched the first episode of SoniAni and flipped out when the main theme started at two minutes in. The #2 review on here [by @Perisher] gives the anime 3/10 but says "the OST was easily one of the best this season. Many scenes felt particularly magical thanks to an inspiring musical backdrop."

https://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=137151

_NTx | Jul 11, 2016 10:55 PM
Sakabe really needs more action anime ASAP. Date A Live, his masterpiece, will be hard to top, but as long as I can listen more of his pipe organ and orchestral stuff I will be happy.

nDroae | Aug 13, 2016 9:43 PM
Go Sakabe's World Break theme feels a little similar to Sawano's Gundam Unicorn theme to me, in that when I try to play one in my head, it sometimes turns into the other. :D

UNICORN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b40mZVnQCTs

World Break:

_NTx | Aug 14, 2016 3:15 AM
[commenting on UNICORN]
The strings section at 0:20 does something similar to those fast 16th notes on World Break theme, and the part at 1:29 kind of resembles WB theme melody. A lot of people loved the main theme more than any other World Break's track, I think I'm in the minority who likes this one better haha. This is for me one of the best tracks Go Sakabe has ever done.

["World Break OST Vol.2-21 Raitei Vasillisa (雷帝ヴァシリーサ)"]

nDroae | Aug 31, 2016 5:24 PM
I've become obsessed with the [Hatsukoi Monster] ED, and the melody of it played as emotional soft score in last week's episode, which was nice.

_NTx | Sep 6, 2016 12:12 PM
I see. Yeah the ED is nice :)

Btw, Go Sakabe will be scoring this. Can't wait :) https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1550120

_NTx | Sep 26, 2016 1:42 PM
It seems that Sakabe is doing this one as well: Magic Kyun! Renaissance. Reverse harem is not my thing but I'll give it a chance.

nDroae | Sep 26, 2016 10:18 PM
NO WAY. I was actually considering watching that already. Well now I will :D

nDroae | Oct 2, 2016 9:35 PM
Yeah! Oh, so far I like Magic-Kyun! Renaissance (and more than Hatsukoi Monster), the MC girl is endearing and relatable and I like the magic art school setup. One of the boys sang a song I liked the melody of, just not so much his English vocals :P

nDroae | Dec 26, 2016 12:11 AM
Finished Magic-Kyun, I found myself rather enjoying it because I can relate to the guys as artists. A lot of pretty good music but nothing really amazing IMO.

_NTx | Sep 22, 2016 12:15 PM
Have you heard Go Sakabe's soundtrack for Kamen Rider Ghost? It's very heavy-rockish and has a lot of electronica (which was very unexpected from him since he's more of a orchestral guy).

nDroae | Sep 22, 2016 7:08 PM
Didn't know about it, thanks for the heads up! I look forward to hearing that :D

nDroae | Oct 1, 2016 6:10 PM
Okay, Kamen Rider Ghost Disc 1 is AWESOME. I love it. The three riders' themes are super hype, and I particularly like the Indian (?) style vocals and instrumentals on some of the title character's tracks. There's some nice stuff on disc 2 too. Shame the Kamen Rider fans I listen to (Super Best Friends Zaibatsu) weren't pleased with the show itself. I've never seen any Kamen Rider, or Ultraman :P

_NTx | Oct 2, 2016 8:44 PM
I am super happy to listen to smth really good from Go Sakabe. Now I can't wait for Cheating Craft :)

_NTx | Oct 6, 2016 12:50 AM
Cheating Craft is ridiculous. This will be the so-bad-it's-so-good anime of the season. It reminds me of Kenzen Robo Daimidaler on that part (I liked that anime).
This first episode wasn't amazing but I'll keepwatching. The OST was good, but like Digimon Tri., it doesn't have real instruments >.> A shame.

nDroae | Dec 26, 2016 12:11 AM
I finished Cheating Craft. It turned into mostly garbage, but in the final episode's battle there was a bombastic instrumental of the OP that I thought was pretty great. I wasn't impressed by any other music in the show, but that may be just my untrained ear. :D
[/spoiler]

_NTx | Dec 28, 2016 9:49 AM
I dropped Cheating Craft at episode 3 (didn't drop it early because I heard a nice -kind of- main theme in the first episode), the music wasn't even at the level of SeikenTsukai (which is miles inferior to DAL). I think Go Sakabe has the potential to be a top-tier composer but he's just not getting it.

nDroae | Dec 28, 2016 7:52 PM
You mean he's failing to live up to his potential?

_NTx | Dec 28, 2016 7:56 PM
Yup. He did Date A Live, one of the best anime scores ive ever heard, the rest of his works are very weak compared to DAL.

[Conversation about how I was missing some of the Date A Live soundtrack releases]
_NTx | Dec 30, 2016 1:53 PM
[DATE A MUSIC EXTENSION] has "Ground Zero", one of the best tracks Sakabe has ever done. DAL II has a new nice motif for the score and more organ works (because of Miku, and my favorite one is "Gabriel-Rondo").

Ground Zero:

I found this Kamen Rider Ghost OST via YouTube:

https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E4%BB%AE%E9%9D%A2%E3%83%A9%E3%82%A4%E3%83%80%E3%83%BC%C3%97%E4%BB%AE%E9%9D%A2%E3%83%A9%E3%82%A4%E3%83%80%E3%83%BC-%E3%82%B4%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88-%E3%83%89%E3%83%A9%E3%82%A4%E3%83%96-%E8%B6%85MOVIE%E5%A4%A7%E6%88%A6%E3%82%B8%E3%82%A7%E3%83%8D%E3%82%B7%E3%82%B9-%E3%82%B5%E3%82%A6%E3%83%B3%E3%83%89%E3%83%88%E3%83%A9%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF/dp/B017UFZJK8

The one Amazon review says「内容は坂部曲と中川曲が半々で鳴瀬曲は少数?といった印象。」(I don't know Japanese, I read that through Google Translate.) But the files are all tagged with 中川幸太郎 Kōtarō Nakagawa as the artist. I do hear some stuff from the show soundtrack. Guess I'll never be able to tag it properly :P

Then there's this other Ghost movie:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E5%8A%87%E5%A0%B4%E7%89%88-%E4%BB%AE%E9%9D%A2%E3%83%A9%E3%82%A4%E3%83%80%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B4%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88100%E3%81%AE%E7%9C%BC%E9%AD%82%E3%81%A8%E3%82%B4%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88%E9%81%8B%E5%91%BD%E3%81%AE%E7%9E%AC%E9%96%93-%E3%82%B5%E3%82%A6%E3%83%B3%E3%83%89%E3%83%88%E3%83%A9%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF-V/dp/B01H71XDP8/

Have you listened to either of those? IIRC you've basically lost interest in Go Sakabe until DAL 3. I was thinking I could click around the final episodes of his last anime, Basilisk: Ouka Ninpouchou, to see if anything sounded good, but I haven't yet.

_NTx | Oct 9, 8:59 PM
The first one is produced by 3 composers (including Go Sakabe and Kotaro Nakagawa) according to VGMDb, but there's not specific track credits.

I actually listened to the second one (Go Sakabe) a while ago, there were some cues reminiscent of his DAL score, but he used a lot of electro elements this time. I didn't lost interesnt on him, it's just that he's getting more drama works than anime. I think his Digimon work was below my expectations, but I wouldn't mind to listen to his Basilisk soundtrack, since I've read nice things about it.

I can answer that last question, it's because tours are risky unless you know you'll be able to sell a lot of tickets (he's nowhere near as popular as others like Kajiura or Sawano), and live orchestra shows are even more expensive :)

Brazilian bossa nova seems to appear in anime more than you'd think. Here's an article titled "Bossa Nova & Anime: A Romantic Duo." https://aminoapps.com/c/anime/page/blog/bossa-nova-anime-a-romantic-duo/ZZtB_ugnw4MLNBorJZK1omn1arGnn8

The reason I gave is why a record label / production committee or whoever is unlikely to pay for it :) Maybe Date A Live could have gotten a live concert when it was in its prime, though if that had happened it might have been just singers and backing tracks.

Which tracks? I'm not really familiar with bossa nova in general, but I remember seeing a Brazilian fan who was proud of seeing/hearing it in anime, I thought that was nice.

It's nice to see that much interest in a rather unknown composer like Go Sakabe (even among anime soundtracks aficionados). It seems that he's stagnated working on low budget projects (mainly harems, but Digimon Tri using all sampled instruments for its soundtrack is beyond belief, come on Toei!), but fortunately he's still very young. Other than that, he's been on my radar for some time and I knew that he had been an assistant to Toshihiko Sahashi (whose work I love and I'm quite familiar with), but I haven't really checked his works in depth outside of maybe some Date A Live. I've liked his music enough to look a bit deeper into his works in the future though.

As for similarities between Sahashi and Sakabe, I haven't listened to enough of the latter to say for sure, some of Sakabe's music reminds me a bit of the "orchestral funk" kind of thing Sahashi often does, exemplified in the two tracks in the original post (although far from the better examples IMO. I'll have to write something about Sahashi someday too, because he is much more than that :) ). Also, Sahashi has done a respectable amount of music for the Kamen Rider series, and helped define its sound significantly, so there might be similarities with Sakabe's Kamen Rider too.

(For another "Sahashi clone" but closer to his purely orchestral style, look up Megumi Oohashi -who worked on Gundam MS IGLOO-)
(Oh, and I saw bossa nova being mentioned above; look no further than Yoko Kanno's Wolf's Rain, she's done them all)

Well, I assume the tracks I picked are equivalent to discovering a band via a radio single, I want to hear more. :D You could just put together a list of Sahashi's best tracks and post it as his composer thread - I haven't set a standard to begin with, I just want the threads to exist, because the page comments are small and temporary.

Strongest feature of the productions actually be its music. EPONYMOUS OPENER IS A ROUSING SONG IN BETWEEN MUSICAL SCORE BY FIRST-TIMER GO SAKABE AS HE SHOWS A GOOD EAR FOR CHOOSING APPROPRIATE PIECES FOR THE TONE WEATHER IT BE HAUNTING VOCALS DRAMATIC STRING PIECES OR EVEN ROMANTIC-PIANO INSERTS.

ORIGIN OF THE ROCK BOY BLESSED WITH SOPHISTICATION OF THE CLASSIC WITH THE AIM OF COMPOSER WHO DOESN'T CARE ABOUT GENER AND STYLE IN THE ACTIVITIES TO AGGRESSIVE.

Ooh, nice :) I like the verse/chorus contrast, and as usual, my favorite part is the bridge.

Wow, November 2018, he's been busy lately. Cool to hear an unusual sound from him, and that he got to write the "epic" closing track. I like how it gradually develops from a light and cute beginning to a beautiful and emotional climax.

Last Kiss: I like all the older Cinderella Girls, so it's nice to get a Sakabe song from one of them (Miyu Mifune, c.v. Sayaka Harada). I like the chill sound with the sparse piano, it brought to mind the early part of Midnight (Giorgio Moroder Remix), which is my favorite thing Coldplay has put out post Viva La Vida / Prospekt's March, though obviously the credit for that goes to Giorgio Moroder.

I've always loved the sound of bass piano notes and I really dig the way they're used in that Coldplay track.

Rie Murakawa - Glass Hour: Oh, gothy pop, I'm always down for that (especially considering this man gave us Resuscitated Hope). I appreciate it exercising enough restraint to be easily digestible compared Ali Project's wild harpsichords etc. I gave Moon lx a couple of listens but didn't get much of an impression, heavy use of violin is welcome but as a whole it seems kind of wandering. That sometimes happens with tracks that grow on me later, though.

Aya Uchida, so this is Kotori from Love Live, haven't listened to any solo stuff by her before. On ONE WAY, her voice strikes me as similar to Iori Nomizu's - cute, but nasal, can be a bit harsh at times. However, on Pink・Magenta she sounds softer and nicer, and I had more fun with the music, which avoids verse-chorus structure and gradually escalates in intensity. At 3:40 she gets to do some long notes that sound really nice. Lastfm user wbge called Pink・Magenta "the most uplifting seiyu song ever!" It's striking how much more I liked her voice on this song versus ONE WAY (I'm live writing this as I listen). Daydream and the melancholy Blue Flower are similarly easy on the ear, with some lovely vocal layering toward the end on Daydream.

Heh, Daydream is also the title of one of Sakabe's score cues from SoniAni.

I'm downloading all of these albums :P

The reason I gave is why a record label / production committee or whoever is unlikely to pay for it :) Maybe Date A Live could have gotten a live concert when it was in its prime, though if that had happened it might have been just singers and backing tracks.

Which tracks? I'm not really familiar with bossa nova in general, but I remember seeing a Brazilian fan who was proud of seeing/hearing it in anime, I thought that was nice.

i was talking about this Arrangment ,

i think you did not listen all music from date a live

did you listen DAL Main Theme
did you listen Dead or Alive
did you listen Date A Live Maboroshi no Jingle Medley

Ah, looks like I listened to that once in February 2016 :)

I have listened to those tracks (the last one I have tagged as デート・ア・ライブ 幻のジングル・メドレー), however I held off on listening to the season 2 soundtracks (Extreme/Impressive/Happy) and then never got to them after completing it. :D

After watching the recent episodes of Date A Live III, I gotta say I finally got that excitement for getting a soundtrack release again by Go Sakabe. The new tracks are superb (I love the renaissance style chants of his work). I wish I could get that hype from him outside of DAL tho.

Heh, from page 3 Google translated: "For example, in the case of Tohka, I asked for a voice with a renaissance-like atmosphere, and I made music based on that."

Comments from MAL reviews:

"Nothing really stands out in terms of sound effects for me Except, a beautiful opening song, I swear by sweet ARMS. This one has to be one of my favorite opening songs ever, and I am a huge fan of it." - @xsizzt https://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=302820

"The soundtrack doesn't stand out to me at all. The opening and endings are mediocre at best, and it isn't like I was expecting much out of it anyway considering the last 2 seasons were nothing special either. I never notice any of the OSTs playing in the background like I do with most shows, so I believe it is fair to say that the sound is only decent." - @Rimzyy https://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=301733

20 to 22 minutes into DAL 3.11 <3 Glorious.

Followed by a fun little riff on Wagner https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridal_Chorus EDIT: Not Wagner lol exposed

I don't think there's anything wrong with the Google translation I quoted? I said "heh" because Sakabe mentioned the renaissance style vocals called out by _NTx :)

it has become clear that an album containing an original soundtrack and a newly recorded character song will be released simultaneously on Wednesday May 22nd.

The title is the TV anime "Date A Live III" Music Selection DATE A "Unforgettable" MUSIC, DATE A "World" MUSIC. In addition to the BGM played by Takeshi Sakabe following the first and second TV anime stages and the theatrical version, newly recorded character songs will be recorded respectively.

Comments have been received from Takeshi Sakabe, so let me introduce it last. Please check it with the final episode that will be broadcast from now on.

Go Sakabe Comments:

When I heard that the Date A Live 3 period has been decided, I was happy to return to this work again. I felt nervous that I wanted to put out a place where I grew up as much as I did for the first time.

In the third term, I made new things for various situations, focusing on seven sins and songs related to origami.

This is a personal highlight, but the Origami edition is one of the best in the original, and it is definitely interesting. We hope that you listen to this soundtrack and think about various scenes.
