How Much Do You Know and Care about Anime staff?

I only know few anime directors. I am bad with names anyways so I can't seem to remember. Same goes for animators, I only know Yutaka Nakamura.

But I really like seeing an anime coming from an established director.

Studios are different tho. I know most of them and always check out which one did which anime.

Most people only care about the studios, I can't even name one director. The only animator I know of is Ema Yasuhara, I don't know of any others.

I think I can name more anime soundtrack composers than any other staff position. Possibly all other staff positions combined.

Hitoshi Sakimoto, Kenji Kawai, Shirou Sagisu, Shinkichi Mitsumune, Masamichi Amano, Yuki Kajiura, Shirou Hamaguchi, Keiichi Okabe, Go Shiina, Megumi Oohashi, Akiko Shikata, Masato Kouda, Yoko Kanno, Ryuichi Takada, Slavek Kowalewski, Rasmus Faber, ...

I DEFINITELY can't name that many directors, writers, or even studios. (A-1, Bones, Xebec, Gonzo, Gainax, Ghibli, Shaft, ...is Aniplex a studio? or just a licensor/distributor?)

My alarm bells go off when I see a director known for a particular/unique style, but tbh the first staff member I usually look for is the composer lol. The difference between a series with forgettable music and one that consumes is astonishing.

I know mostly voice actors (out of any staff I know but overall I know limited voice actors specifically), several creators/directors of works, and a few composers, but that's about it. I know them over time with minimal effort. I rather not go into a spiral of madness trying to correlate each specific staff position doing what work and then to see if a certain duo/trio/group of staff are in another anime work. If there's a cool way of counting the works of each particular staff members in like say your favorites (and this is also assuming we get more than 10), then yeah, that'd be great.

Here recently I've been caring more about directors/etc.,

but all I know is that Masaaki Yuasa is a god,
I'll probably like anything from Yasuhiro Nightow,
and that I should probably check out anything Yoshitoshi Abe and Tatsuya Ishihara work on.

I know of a few of the staff members, mostly for the Sound Department though. After all, Sawano Hiroyuki is my favourite person of the anime industry so I know of a few other really good ones such as Yasuharu Takanashi, Yuki Kajiura and etc. As for the others, I’m only aware of a few well knows directors such as Tetsurou Araki, Ei Aoki and Watanabe(from Re;Zero). I know a lot of Voice Actors and Actresses though, but honestly who doesn’t?

I do care about such things, but not so much tbfh. Besides, I have a bad memory when it comes to names in general, so there you have it.

I mostly care about directors, especially the ones who make original anime, or give their own original touch to adaptations and make them more suitable for the screen, instead of slavishly adapting the source material. People like Shinichiro Watanabe, Satoshi Kon, Isao Takahata, Hayao Miyazaki, Hiroshi Hamasaki, Kenji Kamiyama, Sayo Yamamoto, Naoko Yamada, Masaaki Yuasa, Seiji Mizushima, Ando Masahiro, Satou Junichi and a few more I don't remember right now.

Would have followed writers too, if most anime weren't adaptations.

Not much actually. I mostly just check the studios and that is about it. But if i like the music i will sometimes check the music composer. But i do know some really well known directors and voice actors because i see the anime community talk about them often. But i never voluntarily check the stuff.

Ooh I forgot about voice actors. If I included those, the total number of staff people I know aside from composers would probably exceed the number of composers I know. But I'm still not sure I can actually name that many. (Nana Mizuki, Eri Kitamura, Asami Imai, Megumi Ogata, Norio Wakamoto, Miyuki Sawashiro, Mayu Watanabe (barely counts), Rie Kugimiya, Kana Hanazawa, ... and then we can add dub voice actors like Colleen Clinkenbeard, Cristina Vee, Laura Bailey, Johnny Yong Bosch, Bryce Papenbrook, ...)

Ooh, someone else who pays attention to the composers! :D

What kinds of styles or quirks do each of these composers tend toward? And what shows have they done?

I don't really care. I only remember studios anyway and I'm not going to choose anime to watch based on that.

Sometimes I recognise voice actors based on ther voice but I only remember Kana Hanezawa and Saito Chiwa because I really liked their performances and cared enough to search for them.

They are pretty damn important and can be used as a reference point when picking anime to watch. Certainly more accurate than the "Oh dis studio gud" or "Oh dis studio bad" that people usually go by, where most of the time the studios are a revolving door of staff (with only a handful of studios mostly using permanent staff).

Too bad I'm not bothered enough to thoroughly look into it. I've only really picked a few anime based on the script writers, with most of it manually sniffing them out by watching a little bit of them.
I'm not a lolicon, you're just projecting your tendency to lewd 2D characters.

If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

Yes to a degree, like I'd go on their page and see what other anime they directed and usually watch them too but sometimes they're completely unrelated anime in both style and themes or even execution. There are more variables than directors like source and script.

I care much more about manga since the author has much more importance there.

Over the years I started to remember and recognize a fair amount of names. Mostly directors and animators, but also some VAs and composers and background artists. But I don't often look them up beforehand, rather after or while I watch something that really left an impression in one or more areas.

It's a shame so many people don't pay attention to directors in particular. Some of my favorite ones are barely even known among the anime community, like Hara Keiichi and Hata Masami. Their movies are fantastic.

Animators are more of a personal passion since I love the animation medium and am fascinated with creative and impressive use of it. I have sakuga compilations of all my favorite animators bookmarked that I rewatch regularly when I'm in the mood to spoil myself a bit. Shinya Ohira and Hiroyuki Okiura are probably my favorites and also the ones who started my interest in sakuga, but there's plenty more that I love, like Toshiyuki Inoue, Yoshimichi Kameda, Takeshi Koike, Yoshinori Kanada, Shinya Takahashi, Yutaka Nakamura, Akira Hamaguchi and Sunghoo Park.
I probably regret this post by now.

I'm good at remembering names, so I do know a fair number of directors and key animators. Usually voice actors/actresses are more well-known by watchers since they're more easily recognizable but I actually don't really care about them.

God forbid an anime follows the source material to a T, am I right?
Looking at your list, you barely read manga so you wouldn't know the pain of seeing a manga you like get a shit adaptation that doesn't follow the manga.

By not being slavishly faithful, I don't mean add some random shit and alter the story in a way that goes against the spirit of the source material. When I watch an anime, I want to watch a proper TV show that uses the medium of animation to tell the story visually, not an "animated manga".

Yeah I care enough that I find it sad these guys ain't being paid enough.
But established names don't mean anything to me as I don't do brand loyalty to begin with.

Very little to both questions. I almost never research staff and the only time it ever really gets my attention is when I distinctly recognize a voice or when it results in an in-show reference. But even in those cases it just ends up being passing trivia at best that I'll likely forget until it becomes relevant again. Studios I admittedly keep track of more because it's just advertised more, easy to reference and easy to remember. But I probably couldn't name a single director from any studio except Ghibli because of the Miyazaki memes.
