Gameplay. I know graphics are great, but sometimes I just want an endless content or replay-ability so that people can keep playing it. You know Grand Theft Auto San Andreas? Just give me loads of gang war missions, turf war, more gang and we set for next couple of years.

Bully should have more content and we can go so on and so forth with a lot of older games.

Two things. If the game has lots of replay-ability like Skyrim, and if the game has a multiplayer sand box element to it where anything could happen with other players like GTAV online.

Honestly the biggest factor for me will always be the characters. Obviously story included, but you absolutely need good characters. A boring character will always make the game uninteresting imo.

Story > everything

No way I'm playing a 20+ hour game if the story and characters are weak
If the story is amazing I can grind through any length of garbage gameplay.

It's one of the reasons why I played through the entirety of P4 and couldn't bother to finish P5.

I picked gameplay but tbh i think gameplay and level design go hand in hand. I like rpgs so i kinda understand where people are coming from but its really kinda sad to me just how much gamers today seem to put story and characters above gameplay. That probably sounds elitist but these are supposee to be games.

Some ppl especially those that haven't played or delved deeper much into games seem to value story more than anything which isn't necessarily bad but, u ask urself this question, "if I just want a good story, why not just read a book, or watch anime or smth?". I prefer a game with a good balance between all the elements in the poll. That said, I'd still take gameplay over anything if I were to be given a life and death choice. I mean, it's called a "game" for a reason...

Either the story/characters or graphics.

I play mostly story-based games these days as I like to chill out, nice graphics are a bonus.

The obvious answer is gameplay, you're not going to play a game if it feels like trash, but everything else should be there in a good game

The main reason why I started playing Overwatch was because of the strong female characters.

For me Level Design and Gameplay are the most important one with Level Design slightly more important. Level Design dictate the kind of mission you go into, and those can make difference in my enjoyment of game as the way you approach a game is affected by that. Story, characters and graphic, fps not important to me. I'm a fan of SoulsBorne where story is pretty much left vague or non existence. Lore is not story.

This is a silly question, anyone sane would go for the gameplay. I don't play Crash Bandicoot to experience the story, neither does it have interesting characters or lore for that matter. It has great level design intended to frustrate its users. Gameplay affects re-playability for me so it would be that choice.

I used to firmly believe that story takes precedence over gameplay, but that's been changing over the years. Most games today have forgettable narratives comparing to that of older titles anyways, so might as well prioritize their technical side.

Precisely because I played so many games I feel that story and characters are the most important. It's what sets one game apart from another in the end. Plenty of games out there with similar gameplay after all.

When you've played hundreds of full games you've kind of already seen ''all'' the gameplay. While good gameplay can make a game really enjoyable for many hours, it won't give a lasting impression, imo.
Without enjoyable character/interactions and/or a good story it's hard for me to get into games these days.

As a lot of people said, of course I'd go for gameplay. Why would I play a gameplay that I couldn't like?

Story, characters, etc are meaningless to me if the gameplay isn't completely for me.

As far as I'm concerned, a game's presentation and gameplay should ideally go hand in hand - a game can look stunning to me, but if it lacks gameplay that's as great as the presentation, I can be easily disappointed by it. Between the two, though, I do lean towards a fun gameplay experience when it comes to what I primarily look for in a game.

Good gameplay and level design isn't enough for me to rate a game highly. Not a case of playing the wrong games, as I try to avoid any game I wouldn't at minimum like a lot.

Played too many games so if I were to look at just gameplay or level design its always similar to something I've already played. Which means they will stick out less, and I''ll get bored of them sooner. I don't really have that with story/characters since its easier for me to consider them ''new'', compared to gameplay, and to remember them because story/characters are more memorable when done well, unlike gameplay.

There's a few exceptions on occassion. For example Nioh had excellent gameplay. Still, I remember that game mostly because of how memorable the boss fights and characters were. Even so, I'd only rate it is a very good game, not an amazing one. On the other hand, when I think of for e xample XCOM-2, a game I also played for a few hundred hours, its hard to remember much about the game itself since its basically all gameplay.

It was very enjoyable when I played it, sure. But not memorable at all. Not ''an experience'', just a way to pass time.

No measure of gameplay is going to make up for the lack of either a good story or good characters/interaction for me. Better to have a game with decent gameplay but a great story or characters then a game with decent characters/story but great gameplay.

Graphics don't mean shit if the gameplay, story and characters are bad. The Order 1886 is a perfect example of this.

I'd probably say that every or at least almost every aspect of a video game is very important. Even though I value story, characters and gameplay the most, I would say that things like level desing, sound design and music, characters design, graphics, voice acting and more are equally or almost equally of importance. Video games are a complex thing and you have to pay attention to a lot of aspects whereas with a book you just need to pay attention into writting the story and characters.

Gameplay, but I wouldn't say a game that only has great gameplay but poor everything else would be enjoyable for me. But it probably is the most important factor for me when liking a game or not.

I'd put level design second, because it goes well with gameplay. Good gameplay+level design is enough for me to love a game, even if it fails in every other aspect.

Story and characters aren't very important to me, but if there's some cool characters in it, that's a plus. Story I couldn't care less about, as long as it makes sense if it's there, and it doesn't get too much in the way of me playing the game.

Graphics aren't very important to me, but aesthetics are. That said, I don't like games with lazy graphics, especially if coming from a big developer, I expect and want a good level of quality in my graphics.
FPS, on the other hand, is very important for an enjoyable gameplay experience (importance depends on the type of game, though).

Depends, for something like Mario it has to be gameplay/level design but for an RPG it has to be that and having a story with interesting characters as well. P5 or Nier A are good examples of this.
Graphics aren't very important but they do a good job in baiting me to play certain games based on the artstyle. Something like Octopath Traveler got my attention right away due to its 2D sprite look which I really like.

The less challenging option is to just make a game with free form gameplay that doesn't need a story to be good, like Mario Odyssey. But my favorite games are games that have solid gameplay with a strong focus on story/characters.

I say game play over all, but story and characters is almost even with that. Doesn't mean I don't do my fair share of criticism when a games graphics and resolution aren't where they should be but it's not a complete turn off.

You're comparing Crysis 3, the game that is still the set standard for most powerful hardware's in gaming even after 5 years, to a game in the Peasantstation 4, coupled that with its power point presentation framerate? You're insulting the Master race.

I pretty much see everything except graphics as being equally important. Because in the end, the core parts of the game are what make the game, not how pretty it looks.

Definitely gameplay. This is the most important requirement, because the gameplay makes the game.

I don't really care about the story of a game. A game could have absolutely no story at all, and still be great.

Story and the community within the game. I love good story driven games with deep, characters, and of course gameplay is absolutely importantly. If it's an MMORPG, the community is important to me as well. I won't play the game, no matter how good it is, if the community is toxic.

Gameplay is the most important thing, even the oldest of games if having a good gameplay could still be enjoyable.

Level design comes second but if the game is story driven then the story would be the second most important part.

Gameplay above all else. Having nice graphics, good level design, well-written characters, and a compelling story is great, but if the game itself isn't fun to play, why bother? Obviously this isn't the case for everyone, but I can totally accept everything else being below average as long as I'm enjoying the gameplay. God Hand, for example, looks like shit, has bare bones level design, and has a story that's basically the PG-13 equivalent of a Saturday morning cartoon with characters to match, but it has one of the best combat systems in any game I've ever played.

The only real exceptions are adventure games, in which case the story and characters are most important since that's what the main focus of those games are. No one's gonna look back on Telltale's takes on The Walking Dead or Batman and think "Damn, those QTE's were the best part".

I think graphics are the least important aspect, honestly. What's the point of having a game look as visually polished as possible if you don't put as much effort into everything else? Games like Shovel Knight and Undertale are proof that games can have good gameplay and story while having graphics reminiscent of games that came out 25+ years ago. Plus, games like Mario 3 and A Link to the Past are still highly acclaimed to this day despite not being nearly as graphically advanced as what we have now.

First is definitely story. And looking at most games, I'm probably in the minority, because poorly written turds strive these days. A good example of excellent writing vs shit writing is the difference between the first Fallout's discussion with the Master vs Fallout 3's discussion with the Enclave supercomputer. In one case, you have a shit long discussion about man and it's place in the world, the Great War, the future, and you need to bring him optional loot from an optional quest wich leads you in an optional dungeon to proove him that his plan is flawed and doomed to lead mankind to extinction. At this point, the master realizes what he did and starts the cathedral's auto-destruct.
Meanwhile, in Fallout 3 (or pretty much any game made by Bethesda, these guys have the shittiest writers ever):

The second thing would be gameplay, and I'll give another example because I'm in the mood to shit on modern games.
Level design in FPS became absolutely HORRIBLE this last decade. For some reason FPS devs seem to think they NEED to put a dozen mappers on every corridor until it's filled to the brim with pipes, crates, tons of shit lying everywhere, a few barely visible iron fences, a random hole in the floor, and a shit light source because "le realism". And all the places are so fucking cramped. I literally CAN'T walk through a modern FPS room without getting stuck multiple times on dumbass useless eye candy that is downright detrimental to the actual gameplay. The last Wolfenstein taking place mostly inside a submarine? That was really, really, really dumb and annoying.
Gimme back Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, GoldenEye, Deus Ex or Quake 2, some games where the levels were actually FUN to play, and where your character didn't wear concrete boots for unknown reasons.

@petal as much as I value gameplay, I must admit a good story can make me completely overlook it. A few point&clicks had very cool stories, like Burn Cycle (^%

i'm honestly not too fussed with gameplay as long as the story or world-building is
expansive and thorough enough for me to be able to fully immerse myself into the
game for hours on end. that's when i know i've connected to a game and i feel like
it's actually worth the buck. i've played some really amazing games that have pretty
poor or little gameplay but the story, soundtrack or artstyle just completely made
up for it. i suppose at that point it does make you wonder if it can be considered
a "game" since there isn't as much interaction but personally it's never bothered me
as long as all the other aspects make up for whatever it's lacking.

Last time I tried to emulate it with DOSBox, it kiiiiinda worked. Had problems with the sound, but I remember I solved it by pure luck tweaking some things.
